  1. I noticed that too..... As far as my surgery, no staples on the outside, and I am getting stronger every day. LouieB
  2. I have my ticket......can't wait......I have been going to Laurie's since BEFORE it was open.,,, Should be a blast and free hotdogs too.... I'll buy a drink for any VCer who shows up too...... LouieB
  3. This was a nice CD of some transciptions put out by Bloodshot, which recently came back into print. I have a couple of the Greatest Hits albums on Capital, where he recorded for years and years. LouieB
  4. Yea, his music is pretty special all the way around. What a great career. Need to pull out some of his records today I guess. (He died of lung cancer...and Jim Stagg died of esophogial cancer...yikes on both counts. I would imagine they were both smokers....) LouieB
  5. Checking out the obits today it looks like classic country and honky-tonk singer/songwriter Hank Thompson passed away. Also DJ Jim Stagg as well. Stagg was big in Chicago during the 60s and 70s on WCFL here, but actually he influenced me when he was a DJ on KYW (later WKYC) in Cleveland. As a pre-teen I used to listen to him and Jerry G Bishop on that station before they were both hired by WCFL and moved to Chicago. Those were the days when Top 40 reigned. Actually I was lucky enough to visit KYW in those years, (I forget if it was with Boy Scouts or what), and got to meet both Stagg
  6. Opps..I guess it would help if I looked at the ticket. Since being out sick time has no meaning..... LouieB
  7. One of the staples was already pulled out prior to me opening it and the other is precarious at best. Not taking it back just for that. LouieB
  8. Eubie Blake - early piano rolls, LouieB
  9. Looks cool..didn't realize it was a double CD. Nice generational mix on this one. LouieB
  10. I just got this but haven't listened yet... Pretty good packaging except for the booklet that isn't really attached. LouieB
  11. I liked the Ben Fong Torres book as well. Apparently the new one is a bit better. I suppose there are only so many times you can tell the same story. For an easier way to get the info, watch the movie. LouieB
  12. Yea, frankly I was not sure they would have it. They sold out of the Dylan soundtrack CDs so I asked them to save me one of those when they came in yesterday and also save me this too. Can't wait for either of these. Gonna be great. Did someone post of about the Laurie's 10th year show at the Hideout on November 18? If not maybe Samorama will post up more details soon. LouieB
  13. You know it......not hearing some of those songs ever again could be a blessing...but there are lots of songs like that unfortunately. LouieB
  14. Grand Funk wasn't intially MOR and the Eagles didn't initially suck either. On the other hand GFR wasn't the MC5 and the Eagles weren't the Flying Burritto Brothers (although some of them did play with them.) Once again, the Eagles are too easy to hate. They made some great radio hits and some dreck, but they really aren't all that bad. LouieB
  15. I have a copy waiting for me at Laurie's ....can't wait. LouieB
  16. This is probably the sickest thing about it. Hating the Eagles is way way too easy. Compared to so much of the crap on radio, what I have heard from their new album, doesn't sound all that bad and their greatest hits aren't THAT bad either. People just love to hate these guys, that's all. After all these years of hearing how horrible the Eagles are on VC I continue to take the position that they really aren't that bad. As for Grand Funk....what do people here think, they are a cult band? Heck no, they sold a jillion records and much of what they did was very MOR. LouieB
  17. A rock band acting like assholes...what a surprise... LouieB
  18. Amazingly we have no elections here in Chicago at all. (There is however a groundswell to something on the next election to recall state officials since everyone is pissed at our governor.) LouieB
  19. Well if you don't like them you can check out Freakwater or Sweetwater instead.... LouieB
  20. I think I have just about every bit of Gram there is with the exception of one of the interview disks that didn't seem worth it. Most of it is on vinyl due to the fact that I bought them way back when.... Live with the Fallen Angels is definitely worth having......starts a bit rocky and gets much better. LouieB
  21. Favorite Colours is terrific, though I found the live album uneven to be sure. For some great back-up the Neko disk is super as is the one with Jon Langford. I saw them for the first time when they opened for Langford and then backed him up. They had a marimba player with them on that tour which was very fun. As I have said, I love the fact that they get in and out of songs in a big hurry; no fucking around, just play the shit out of it and move on to the next one. LouieB
