  1. I was able to download this via the link in the latest Wilcoworld email. Now listening to a song selected by the, uh, Nuremberg Group.
  2. I was there that night, and it's still one of my favorite shows too.
  3. I'm glad they played "Either Way." There's something about hearing that song at an outdoor show, while it's still kind of light outside, that makes me miss summer already even though it's still July. "Side with the Seeds" was well-timed with the "the park grows dark" lyric. Jeff seemed proud. It was also raining lightly during "Broken Arrow," so the line "...that waited outside in the rain" got a big cheer.
  4. Great show tonight in South Bend. Setlist to come...
  5. Well, that's pretty much the SnS show. The second year we had a big sound setup, but subsequently didn't think it worked as well with our show's vibe. Last year, due to a variety of factors, we had no mikes or anything. Voice strain can be a concern - I think it's been raised before, and the last thing anybody wants to do is cause a problem for Jeff - but it seemed to work out okay. There are obviously lots of benefits to having a quality sound setup, both for performer and audience. I also wanted to ask which songs (besides "She's a Jar") included other people accompanying Jeff?
  6. Nice choices, everybody! "Flatness" was actually Sir bböp's request at the SnS show last year, but I don't think I've ever heard of "Nothing Up My Sleeve" being played. Good to know it's possible, for future reference. And congratulations to ditty and fiance!
  7. How many submissions have you received, gogo? I need to send mine sometime this week.
  8. They (daytrotter) tweeted about this a day or two ago. I really like what they put out, in general, so I'm looking forward to this.
  9. I once borrowed Owen Meany from a friend for approximately five years, and never read it. She told me it was one of her favorite books ever, but the plot just doesn't sound appealing to me at all. I gather, from all the love it's getting around here, that it would be worth a try anyway.
  10. The setlist from that show is here.
  11. Yeah, it was a really good night of music, even if all of Huntsville's stuff may not be for me. One of my favorite things about seeing On Fillmore (and Nels and Glenn playing with Huntsville) was the sheer variety of "small intruments" they used. Stuffed bird through the guitar pickups, dual garden weasel wheels playing crotales, massage tripods and even ... bamboo on a rope, swung like a foxtail? I couldn't quite tell what that was. Lou?
  12. Midnight's Children was pretty excellent.
  13. My list is probably more like yours, Matt, than like most people's here. I say go for it, in the spirit of what this list should show ... this particular message board's top 100 albums. Well ... the top 100 albums of participants in this thread on this particular message board.
  14. I've been working on my list. (Google spreadsheets is great for this ... you can drag and drop rows!) I just axed three albums I realized were in my top 50 because I felt they should be (I like them a lot and really do believe they are great, classic records), but not because I truly love them more than 47 other contenders. See ya, fellas.
  15. WOW! Thanks for putting so much work into this ... I'll be downloading the mixes for sure.
  16. Jeff previewed this song at one of the solo benefit shows in March. I can't wait to hear Mavis singing it.
  17. Nice! I just remembered a "private event" Jack Daniels-sponsored show by the New Pornographers a few years ago in Madison. A.C. Newman busted out one of their free bottles of whiskey and passed it around the first few rows of the crowd, and I think I took a sip. Looking back, it's a shame Dan Bejar wasn't at that show.
  18. Wow, apparently too early in the morning for close reading on my part. But at least I came up with one...
  19. Glenn Tipton - Sun Kil Moon Hope - Martin Rivas It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine) - R.E.M. So ... this isn't exactly a rare occurrence? I've been wanting to put together a list of first names used in Fleet Foxes songs. Those guys really love first names in songs.
  20. I believe I was the person last time who asked if we had to list all 20. It's not that I couldn't think of 20 ... or 50 ... albums I like a whole lot. I guess I just have less faith than everyone else in my own personal ability to be the arbiter of "Best Album Of All Time" as spread over 50 choices, especially given the number of albums in existence that I've never even heard. Maybe I'm just thinking about this in the wrong way. Regardless, I'm sure you'll be getting a list from me.
  21. The paint for the luminous watch dials, that contained radium salts mixed with a zinc compound? The factory workers were mostly young women in their 20's, who were trained to moisten their brushes to a point with their lips. They'd also do cool stuff like painting their nails with the paint, putting some the dust in their hair so their hair would glow, etc. Eventually the radium buildup started to eat holes through their bones and they all died. But the few who lived long enough did win $10,000 each in a lawsuit to go toward medical and funeral expenses!
  22. Wow, I haven't checked this thread in way too long! If anyone else is interested, I highly recommend the audiobook version. There are so many side jokes and random comments that Cross throws in (including plenty of snide comments about the laziness of people listening to this who can't manage to pick up a book and read) and it includes bonuses like one of his lists in the chapter of lists put to music and performed by Les Savy Fav. I read A Gate at the Stairs and enjoyed it, but I can see where you're coming from. I recently read a story from her Birds of America, (part of a collection
