  1. It was actually meant as a joke. I take it you're not a Colbert fan, are ya? Trust me, I'm not gonna insult someone's choice of fav/least fav Wilco tunes: it was hard enough picking the "least favs" of the group. The fact that you're here and I'm here shows we have something in common with our musical taste, right?
  2. Aaaand you're dead to me. My list: I Must Be High > Just That Simple Misunderstood > Outtamind (Sesame Street Version) Wilco > Bragg (One By One > Christ For Pres) Summerteeth > My Darling Wilco > Bragg (Secret Of The Sea > Blood Of The Lamb) Poor Places > Kamera (which is still > I must Be High) Handshake Drugs > Less Than You Think He's also contributed many a wonderful song to Autumn Defense albums. I feel unashamed to admit I absolutely do not like his single Wilco contribution.
  3. Just pick up the newest Golden Smog record: it's so heavy on the Gary Louris-led tunes that it's practically a companion to Smile or Rainy Day Music although I really wouldn't put any of the new GS stuff on par with even those two albums. They're on "hiatus" though although who knows? Maybe we'll get a Louris/Olsen record sometime in the next few years. That'd be sweet.
  4. The only DBT album I've been able to force myself into buying based on people's praises here on VC is "The Dirty South." I like roughly half the album, but find the songs I do like to be forgettable. All of Patterson Hood's songs make me cringe and nearly all of Mike Cooley's are good. It's an album that I don't think was worth the 13 bucks I paid, but it doesn't make me feel like I wasted the money either. As a disclaimer to all of this, I must admit I'm not a big southern rock fan but I do dig it at times. And, even though I don't particularly like Neil Young all that much, his music h
  5. I don't think Nevermind has aged particularly well either but I still think it's a wonderful album that I never listen to. However, this thread has reminded me that I own In Utero, so it's playing right now. Thanks.
  6. It's not misogynistic IMO. I just don't enjoy that quality a whole lot in a rock song for some reason. As I said before, Lucinda's voice is awesome and I love when she has that angry tone in her rocked-up tunes. And I love Norah's voice: it really compliments her piano playing.
  7. I'm sorta jealous. All I got is Wilco (10/7), Wilco (10/8), and Jay Bennett (10/23).
  8. There aren't many female vocalists I like a whole lot. The only one I really like is Lucinda Williams (although that live album kinda sucks). Other than that, I think Norah Jones is pretty good sometimes. I love Portland, Oregon on this album and that's really it. I have trouble making it through the rest of the thing, but the music is pretty solid most of the time.
  9. Not to be a jerk or anything...Benson actually is only the engineer for "Little Red Shoes" according to the liner notes, but I never did notice the Raconteurs connection. Thanks for pointing it out.
  10. This is my first YLT album (I bought it on a whim) and while they didn't beat my ass, this album definitely kicks some serious ass. What a great record from the Spiders-esque first track all the way through Beatle-esque pop tunes and punkish rockers. This is most likely gonna end up a top 5 album for me this year.
  11. Well there is a song called What Light and, obviously, Walken is a direct reference to Jesus Christ our one true Lord and Savior. I should also mention that Jeff uses the word "you" a lot in "Is That The Thanks I Get?" and with a little capitalization in the liner notes, that "you" becomes "You." Think about it.
  12. As far as I'm concerned, getting the 3-disc set "How The West Was Won" is enough. It's got nearly all the modern rock radio treasures and some killer 20+ minute versions of Dazed and Confused and Whole Lotta Love. This collection reminds me a lot of a Dead show: the first set is relatively short songs and the second set really turns the corner and takes you to an area of music not many bands can get to.
  13. It really is almost like a new post-Olson Jayhawks record...and I believe it would be the worst one yet. The album really isn't that good and I was really let down by it. In a year of great music, this one is a major lowpoint. It also could have used more Jeff on it as the songs he is in are the highlights for me.
  14. Sir Cali-burr, Will it ever get any bigger? Sincerely, Jack M. Hoff
  15. OMG!!! Like, this is all the shit I've been looking for for months. Thank you SO MUCH for bringing this to my attention. Seriously, you have a nice days too, okay?
  16. Same here. Also, the more I play it on guitar, the more I love it. At first it was the song I skipped over to get to "Loneliness," but now, not so much.
  17. Linky At first I thought it was the song from Oddjob Jack or whatever the show was Jeff wrote the song for, but came to the conclusion this is referring to something totally different. Has anyone heard this and what the hell is it? Edit: Okay, I just found this, and it made me sad...real sad. It's obviously the Jeff of the beloved band to which this message board is dedicated.
  18. Great song--great lyrics. And I totally empathize with you Jaymie. I'm 22 and had been with my high school sweetheart throughout college despite a semi-long-distance (180 miles apart) relationship. Throughout our 4 years in college, I made that nearly 400-mile trek every other weekend in order to be with her. She didn't have a car at school and had no means of seeing me if I didn't drive there. Two days before we were to graduate, she told me she didn't think she was ready to move in together or get engaged...this after she had been the one obsessing over it for three years. I had made
  19. I like the new Petty better than the new Dylan, but they're both freakin' great. I have an hour commute to work, so buying a bunch of new albums is good for me because I'll have plenty of time to listen to them. Lately, I've sorted my CD collection out so that only the 2006 releases I have are in the car so I'm basically forced to listen to them repeatedly and really hear them (this isn't a bad thing as radio in southern Indiana blows). There are about 10 more releases I plan to get this year: Starflyer 59 (tomorrow), My Morning Jacket, Scissor Sisters, Decemberists, Jet, Willie Nelson, T
  20. I like their first album a lot, but the that new single makes me wanna freakin' barf. Bringing back falsetto-led disco is something I could have done without. I'll still by the album but my expectations are low...real low. I do think they have mainstream appeal, but it's more based overseas than here.
  21. As long as Donna isn't singing in it, yes, I too can say that. There are only about 3 versions I've heard thus far where her vocals DON'T make me cringe.
  22. I have a Johnny Cash version of it where the chord progression is much different and the verses are totally switched around. I may dig it up later and put it up or something. But first, I gotta work for 10 hours so...maybe around midnight tonite if I remember.
  23. I've been tempted to make a mix disc of Pigpen's stuff, but frankly, it'd be half-filled with a 30-minute version of "Turn On Your Lovelight." What a classic voice from such a classic act.
  24. I was reading through everyone's lists looking specifically to see if I'd be the only one to contribute this song. Thank god I'm not. Great freakin' choice. My list of favs: Destoyer - Rubies Television - Marquee Moon White Stripes - Ball & Biscuit Decemberists - The Tain (5 songs put together or not, it's one awesome track) Decemberists - Bagman's Gambit Sufjan Stevens - Detroit, Lift Up Your Weary Head! Sufjan Stevens - Vito's Ordination Song Semisonic - I Wish (before you criticize, it's Gary Louris on guitar so bite me) Rolling Stones - Midnight Rambler (off Get Yer Ya-Yas Out) Neu
  25. Thanks for the heads-up.
