  1. Those dresses are about 20 years old, and were originally made for the teenage dancers. Most of us felt pretty good about just being able to squeeze into them, but one woman was actually wearing her original dress from when she was 16! And she's got a new(ish) baby! I also just realized that three of the people in the Fonz t-shirt pic are also in that pic.
  2. A more recent picture of me, not in a Fonz t-shirt. In this one, I'm the one in the green dress:
  3. Six months ago, a close friend of mine suffered a terrible personal tragedy. His tragedy can't match the scope of what happened five years ago, but his grief was every bit as enormous as those widows'. This weekend, I attended his son's fifth birthday party, and in a couple of months, I'll be attending his wedding. Life does go on, and sometimes getting on with your life can be the healthiest thing in the world. You have no idea what kind of personal grief those women went through, and probably continue to go through. Edit: posted before I saw M.Chris' post.
  4. Based on the framing, I'm going to guess that my mom took that picture. I like to see the footwear.
  5. Probably true, but I agree with foolnrian, I also think of this look as the faux-hawk:
  6. It's an old song, with a new arrangement by Jeff Tweedy. Here's what Laura Cantrell has to say about it:
  7. I really like Sally Timms' version on this album. In fact, I really like that whole album.
  8. Dunja, you always get in first with the birthday wishes, hope we didn't make you wait too long for these!
  9. Hours later... Hi Kate! No travel plans at the moment, unfortunately.
  10. And the one that's posted in the other thread is a perma-link: http://www.maudiemc.com/Shine.mp3
  11. I would just like to say that I'm way too lame to ever actually get off my ass and make one of these mixes, but I've downloaded a bunch of them and plan to steal a few more from this thread, so thanks to y'all. Also, since I haven't thanked ction yet for that pop punk mix which is currently rockin' my socks, I'll take this opportunity to do so here: Thanks, man.
  12. Article from two years after, about air quality following 9/11 It's amazing to me that more people didn't stop to think about what was/could have been floating around down there at the time. I was at the site twice, for a week each time, in the two months after. Part of my job was distributing respirators to people working on the pile, and then trying to convince them to actually wear them. Not much luck there. More surprising to me were the people who lived in the neighborhood, who were desparate to get back into their homes. I can understand the emotional need to do that, but people
  13. I hope that was Analogman! Seriously, only 3% donate? Yowza, that sucks. C'mon people, pony up! Hey, is there any way to post this on the tracker? I think some people go over there without checking in here, it might remind some people to at least check the announcements here.
  14. i hope you used that opportunity to lay some groundwork One time my friend Russell was walking home through the quad with a guy he'd met in the bar that night. On the way, they ran into the guy's ex-boyfriend, they all chatted for a while, and then Russell's guy ended up going home with his ex. A few days later, there was a knock on Russell's dorm room door, and it was the same guy, saying I remembered you lived here, was in the dorm and just stopped by to say hi, blah blah blah. So Russell, still pissed off from being dumped in the quad, told the guy "If you stopped by here thinking that
  15. I work for an organization that participates in these kinds of drills semi-regularly, and one thing that you might not have gotten to see was the scrambling around that the government agencies were doing behind the scenes. More than likely, it wasn't just a fire drill type of exercise, it gave them a chance to figure out if they could reach each other if the phone lines were down, if they'd be able to call on contractors outside the city, how the communication between local, state, and federal agencies worked, that kind of thing. It's pretty frightening to me that no matter how many of these
  16. I'm listening to http://www.kexp.org right now, and they said they're going to be broadcasting some stuff live from Chicago for the next couple of days. In-studio appearances from Jon Langford, Devin Davis and The M's were just teased. Sounds good to me.
  17. Wish I could be around this week for all the cool events! In fact, I wish I could be around a lot more often, just in general. Happy birthday, Sam!
  18. When my first niece was born, one of my cousins asked the delivery room nurse if she'd ever seen a baby with that much hair. The nurse said, "well, a lot of asian and hispanic babies are born in this hospital, so, yeah..." Despite the fact that I would have no trouble believing that that baby could be either hispanic or asian, I also think she really does look like a mix of Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise. Which I was totally not expecting. In other news: I love mrkinsley's new sig. In other other news: my cousin Eamon's new baby, Eamon Og, born last Friday:
  19. It's a cool song, and an even cooler story: http://archive.viachicago.org/index.php?sh...c=11095&hl= (this auction happened at the same time as the Living Room Show auction)
  20. We had a mini-high school reunion last weekend, and there was much discussion about whether they even still make "California Coolers".
