VCers in bands: LET'S GET SOME VC SHOWS HAPPENING!
Ghost of Electricity replied to PopTodd's topic in Someone Else's Song
Los Gasolineros based in Krakow, Poland. I could try to get the boys as far away as Prague or Berlin. (Wish me luck in finding any takers here ) -

you can't give us that kind of info, not tell us who says it, and then give us a link that doesn't work! That's just cruel! -
Musicians - Ever been double-booked?
Ghost of Electricity replied to lamradio's topic in Someone Else's Song
It's happened to me, and was the final clue to the puzzle: some bridges are worth burning. Incidentally another band I play with went back to play that venue and that band had problems with the a-holes as well. It's a shame in more than one ways too, because the venue was one of a very few places in town that serve a tasty local brew which is about three cuts above the usual poisonous piss-water most places serve. -
A Central Depository For VCers Music!

The songs "Genocide Eyes" and "Comfort Food" seem to get a lot of positive response, and as up-tempo 3 and a half minute songs they seem to fit within the parameters of a "single," but if there's something else you'd prefer to put up, use your own better judgement. Thanks -

well, the record is done, i'm just waiting on the master for one more song to come through. Due to lineup changes we went through the ordeal of a name-change:Gasoline became Los Gasolineros. Earth shattering, I know. If this close resemblance is in breach of the rules, could you include something from the new one rather than the old one, please Todd? I'm sure you know what it's like to be excited about new material and wanting to promote it. And so, withough further adieu, may I present you with Los Gasolineros -

Is Tommy Stintson still involved? -
hey, wait wouldn't tyler be considered a state worker? And why wouldn't he be allowed to spend his pay the way he likes? and since when are drugs not considered a necessary expense for a rock and roll star? and what is my point anyway?

I was always aware of Rush but never got into them. Then, last week on a transatlantic Air Canada (go figure) flight one of the in-flight movie options was a Rush documentary. They seemed like nice guys and a good degree less boneheaded than some of the people that were interviewed, such as Gene Simmons or Sebastian Bach, and I was surprised at some of the other people who were interviewed, like Billy Corgan. So I figured what the hell, and gave 2112 a listen. And sure, I would listen to it again. Aerosmith, on the other hand, is just farcical.

Styx? I didn't know that they were still around. Boggles the mind.

So I caught an NPR interview with the artist formerly known as Cougar yesterday, which was actually a rebroadcast of an old interview, and the interview was decent. I used to listen to him in the early eighties when I was about twelve and he was the closest thing to earnest roots music being played on FM radio. So having a bit of a nostalgic soft spot for him, but not having thought about him in 20 years, I checked out the NPR stream of the new record and was pleasantly surprised. And as an added bonus, it's mono

I would like to see one of several scenarios: 1)Jeff cuts the leash on Nels' and Glenn's experimental side and they go for something nuttyweird. 2)They go for a super stripped down sound: Glenn only gets a snare, bass and high hat, Jeff and Nels one guitart apiece, Pat an upright piano, Mike an hammond, John an upright bass. If their other efforts have been approaching the instrumentation like a fox, let them approach this one like a hedgehog. 3) Daniel Lanois comes into the loft and gets bossy. However, I don't think that any of these will actually happen, in particular number 3, whic

Dylan Covers
Ghost of Electricity replied to Shakespeare In The Alley's topic in Someone Else's Song
I like Edie Brickell and New Bohemians' version of "Hard rain's a-gonna fall." At least I think i do because it's been about a milllion years since i heard it. Also, when I was a d.j. at the radio station in college and had the graveyard shift i used to spin a replacement's b-side "like a rolling pin," which, while not a masterpiece, did have a certain 'mats booze-soaked charm. -
Murderers, Gunslingers, Outlaws, & Prison Songs
Ghost of Electricity replied to Terrapin Ben's topic in Someone Else's Song
I don't listen to it myself everyday either, but everytime I do listen to it I'm glad I did. An almost related anectdote: About two years ago I started playing in a band; the singer/frontman is as much a Beck fanatic as I am a Wilco fanatic. One of the songs in the repetoirehe would always announce as a Beck cover, but when I learned it bells were ringing that weren't Becl bells, so I went into my collection of old time music ans sure enough, it was an old Carter Family song. (though actually not one of the Carter Family songs on the Anthology). When you start looking, you can find -

Your loss. The origins of everything are in there. I'm particularly fond of the notes, which give Harry Smith the opportunity to write sentences like "Zoologic Miscegeny Achieved." -

you could do about a hundred mix tapes of this... Vetiver- Know No Pardon Nick Cave and/or Johnny Cash- the Mercy Seat Merle Haggard and/or Flying Burritto Brothers (and probably others)- Sing Me back Home Johnny Cash- Don't take your guns to town Neil Young -Down By the River Wilco-Bull Black Nova this in just 30 seconds off the top of my head- if i started thinking of Greatful Dead and Tom Waits and The Harry Smith Anthology there would be dozens more -
If I could afford it I would buy a Gretsch Chet Atkins. And technically speaking, anyone who owns a Les Paul...

Neil Young's Lost 70's albums
Ghost of Electricity replied to rockinrob's topic in Someone Else's Song
Has anyone ever heard any of this stuff? My fear is that Neil originally blocked its release because the records were sub-par. I hope that isn't the case, though. -
What albums are flawless to you?
Ghost of Electricity replied to remphish1's topic in Someone Else's Song
I guess I have to get involved the pedantic argument as to what flawless means as I think this is the weakest of the four real VU records. according to that flawless reference source, the free online dictionary: I'm a huge VU fan, but "Sister Ray" is the worst thing they ever recorded, most definitely a flaw. In fact, I would say that this record is a flaw in their discogagraphy. The two VU records I would nominate are the first and third. -
playing solo vs. playing with a band
Ghost of Electricity replied to PopTodd's topic in Solid State Technology
On a practical level, I've always found it much easier for a band to fill a room than to do it with an accoustic guitar. Also, there's noone else to diffuse the stage fright. There's no doubt about where all the eyes are. And as far as the mistakes/talent thing goes, I find I have to "dumb the songs down" a bit, which detracts from them. On the other hand, complete artistic control is nice (but that isn't necessarily always a good thing). So, my vote is for band. -
I'd rather see them being musically restless than restless in a business sense, but hopefully the two can and will go hand in hand.
