Wilco — 6/23/12, Morrison, CO (Red Rocks Amphitheatre)

So now "true" Wilco fans can't also be pot smokers? What is the world coming to? Crazy good setlist, though, Hoping for something similar at the two night stint at Wolf Trap! -

That was great -- thanks for posting, Mrs. Slocombe's Pussy! The ghosts looked very pretty blowing in the breeze. Just think, another night of that wonderfulness! Amazing (for those lucky enough to be there!)!! -

California Stars (w/Punch Brothers on mandolin, fiddle, acoustic guitar, banjo and upright bass and taking all solos) Oh, I bet that was blissful. There was a time when I wasn't that excited about hearing that song at shows -- seemed like it was always played -- but then something clicked and now it's one of my faves to hear live. Can only imagine how lovely it must have been to hear it under that big starry Colorado sky! -
Can't wait to hear all about it -- I envy you guys for the experience of seeing Wilco at that amazing venue! Lots of after-the-show details, please. And bonus points to anyone who posts photos!

I know what you mean. When I hear a Wilco song in the grocery store, at first I get a little thrill of recognition, but then it just feels weird. It's taking something small and personal (to me, anyway) and putting it some big random place, completely devoid of context, and it just doesn't sit right. My favorite listening place for Wilco is my car (and of course at a show!). The cartoon that started this conversation doesn't offend me, though. Anything can become a parody of itself, especially when so many people are so devoted to it.

I, too, am so happy about the Wilco friends/friendly folks I've met through the board! Some in person, some only through PMs, but all in all, a fantastic and diverse group of folks I'm happy to know and wouldn't have otherwise met. Workaday life tends to be so busy that I don't get to see local friends as often as I'd like, so I'm doubly happy to have some supplemental online Wilco friends. Hope to meet more VCers at this summer's shows and SS 2013. Hi, y'all!

Dredging up this old thread but I'm watching season 2 of Treme on dvd and it's just so good. I love the way music is woven through the show -- I love most New Orleans music anyway (especially trad'l jazz and brass band), but often when I listen to it at home on the stereo it suffers from lack of context. The show puts it all in context, and damn, do I love watching Wendell Pierce blow that trombone! Also, the jazz funeral at the end of episode 5 is heart-stopping. Any other fans of the show out there?

For Christmas in 1975, I got a yellow cowgirl costume and a copy of "Rhinestone Cowboy" on 45. My favorite gift that year -- played that little record to death!

Do they actually play songs we request?
smells like flowers replied to blackmoon77's topic in After The Show
I have a theory that Jeff promised Sue to play that at every show! -
I'm debating doing the same thing. Online sites are only reserving through May 2013, but I guess if you call, they'll book for that weekend. Maybe I'll actually get a place in town this time!

I searched and searched, but this thread was the closest I could find to an Official John Stirratt Appreciation thread. The photo of John doing a rock star jump on the front page of Wilcoworld.net is utterly fantastic! Move over, DLR! Edit: Fixed the error in the spelling of John's last name. The spelling police around here are hardcore!

Touche. It would suck, though, to hear She's A Jar, and from here on out not be able to banish intruding thoughts of s&m and track marks.

I feel your pain. What started as a new poster's sincere attempt at digging into the meaning of a song with enigmatic lyrics turned into a sarcasm fest about girls with big boobs and heroin. Heavy lid, indeed. Hopefully the song isn't really ruined for you, Chinese Apple. It's one of their prettiest, IMO.

For me, She's A Jar is one of those songs you just let wash over you. The meaning of the lyrics is secondary to the way the whole thing feels -- the perfect marriage of words and music. There is clearly specific intent and meaning to many of Jeff's lyrics; however, it was so interesting to have him reveal that in writing some of the songs on The Whole Love (I Might, in particular) the lyrics grew out of grunts and the words just fit the rhythm of the song ("the sunk soul with the coal clean toe is a mutha!" WTF!!). That's the beauty of many Wilco songs to me -- a particular phrase may jump

I also have to pass this up because of the price. But I'm content with my 3-in-a-row earlier in July! Have fun, all who go to Mass MOCA! See you at Solid Sound next year, for sure!

My usual approach is like Oil Can Boyd's wife -- if the first 50 or so pages don't grab me, I abandon ship. Since I work at a library, I don't feel the need to keep books that I've already read (with some exceptions, of course); also, I rarely buy books. I'll let the county government do that! But I work with some serious book hoarders whose personal library collections contain bazillions of books.

That kind of works for me, since it has those big ole trumpets and all!

Thanks, Diane! Trying to figure out if it's do-able moneywise. (And may need to talk my husband Joe, the not-really-a-Wilco-fan, into seeing them again this summer.) I couldn't see anything related to the release of add'l tix on Mass MOCA's website. Any idea what they're going for?
-
Oh, that is so tempting! I have to go see my dad in New Hampshire sometime this summer, and what a boon that would be to add the Mass MOCA show to my trip! Must consult Magic 8 Ball...

The spanish words in the song really don't have the right flow as far as strictly how it sounds, but it was very nice of Jeff to make this attempt. More proof of the two-way love fest between Wilco and the Spaniards. How bout those "voces en mi cabeza" ??!!

A couple weeks back I was immersed in all things Patti Smith. I read Just Kids, which I thought was very beautiful, and a few days later I watched Dream of Life, the documentary that follows her life over the course of 11 years. I've never listened to her music but I find her work to be utterly compelling. I should check out the new one!

Would love the chance to see the whole thing... especially excited for How to Fight Loneliness and Too Far Apart. Perhaps you'd be willing to burn an extra? Costs covered, of course.

Aww, man! Watched part of this today and was all set to curl up with the rest of it tonight, but now when you click on the video link in this thread, you get "This video is private." Same for the you tube link. There are some other videos posted on you tube of Wilco at the Primavera Festival, but poorer quality -- just taken by people in the crowd with their phones. I guess I'm lucky to have seen some of it (and acoustic Spiders, at that). If anyone has another good link to it, please post -- thank you!

Are you enjoying it? I loved that book!

Im not so sure about Bull Black Nova
smells like flowers replied to IRememberDBoon's topic in Just A Fan
I'm finding a lot of that on sooutoftune.org. Lots of songs don't match the setlist. Not that I'm complaining -- it's a great site and a treasure trove of Wilco/Tweedy love!
