Pretty good write-up from the Boston Globe's music blog: http://www.boston.com/ae/music/blog/ JEFF MANGUM With ACME (American Contemporary Music Ensemble) At: Sanders Theatre, last night (repeats tonight at Jordan Hall) By Marc Hirsh Globe Correspondent CAMBRIDGE -- Operating under the moniker Neutral Milk Hotel, Jeff Mangum recorded two albums – one of which, “In the Aeroplane Over the Sea,” rapidly revealed itself as one of the best of its era and well beyond – and then vanished for a dozen years. As a result, all Mangum has to do to wring fervent applause out of his devoted cult follo

I was there and thought it was fantastic. His voice sounds great. I was curious how some of the more elaborate songs would sound stripped down to solo acoustic but he did a great job with that. My only complaint is that it was fairly short - 60 or 65 minutes including two encores.

In my early naive days of internet use a friend told me to check out the band Blonde Redhead so I searched for them at work one day. I was pretty sure I was going to be fired based on what appeared in the search results.

I met Jonathan Richman years ago and he was very nice. I had seen him in Boston and then a few months later I moved to Ithaca NY and he was playing there. I went over to say hi and mentioned being from Boston and we had a nice conversation about Boston neighborhoods and places. I ran into Alex Chilton on the streets of New York. We walked together for a while talking about New York and the pacific northwest. He seemed to want to talk about anything but music. Kristin Hersh (Throwing Muses) and Tanya Donelly (Throwing Muses/Belly) are both really nice and approachable.

I am really bummed to be missing that but I'm going to see Jeff Mangum instead so it's not all bad.

I'm going tomorrow night. Can't wait ...

I'm here but unfortunately it looks like I am not going to be able to make the show! I'm hopeful something falls through - and then I'll scramble and try to get a ticket. -

I felt it up here in Boston. I thought I was just dizzy and then my office door swung about six inches.

Don't know why it took me so long to see this. I really liked it. The opening scene was shot right outside my office and the bank they robbed is my bank!

This. I've listened to the whole thing twice, both times being the day it came out.

I realize this is supposed to be about tonight not last night but I went last minute so I didn't have time to post beforehand. Tift Merritt (with Buffalo Tom's Bill Janovitz opening) at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

A few of my favorites: Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense tour. Most of my concert viewing to that point had been the Grateful Dead/Jerry Garcia Band so this gave me a whole new take on a concert performance. Wilco - summer 2000. Opened with Airline and I was hooked. Arcade Fire - Funeral tour. Opened with Wake Up and I was floored. They were all singing, even the band members without microphones. Pixies, the Rat in Boston circa 1988. I had seen them before and liked them but wasn't blown away. Then they came out and opened with with Bone Machine. Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Song -
Bon Iver tonight in Boston

Not surprising at all. But it did remind me how good those first three albums are.

RIlo Kiley split Country-pop band Rilo Kiley have split up, guitarist Blake Sennett has said. The quartet, who feature Jenny Lewis as their lead singer, were thought to be on hiatus while Sennett recorded as part of The Elected and Lewis worked as part of Jenny and Jonny with her partner Jonathan Rice, but the guitarist has now said they will not be reuniting. Speaking to Spinner, Sennett explained the reasons for the split: "I just felt like there was a lot of deception, disloyalty, greed and things I don't really want to submit myself to. I had related that frustration to music but I j

1. Got AM when it came out. 2. Camden Maine July 3, 2000. I know I have mentioned this here before but by about 30 seconds in to the opening song (Airline to Heaven) I knew I had a new favorite band.

Really liked this movie ...

One of my favorites that I haven't seen mentioned yet is Buffalo Tom's Skins.
