Wow, Pat Buchanan? The more I learn about Paul, the more I like him. I read that if you drink enough Kool-Aid, it starts to taste like champagne.

Wilco's 'I Got You' on Obama's 2012 Campaign Playlist
Mr. Heartbreak replied to The High Heat's topic in Just A Fan
"I got you, and that's all I need..." Hmm, is that the song Obama thinks we should be singing about him? Damn, maybe I'll vote for Ron Paul after all. I keed, I keed. -
I know it's a pointless exercise, but I am trying to imagine who would be in a Ron Paul cabinet. Hmm, would it be a bunch of Republicans, many of whom are more establishment and less libertarian than him? I suspect it would. Thinking of the options, I will not have a problem voting for Obama against whatever jagoff the Republicans put up against him. I know I'm not getting Ram Dass or Deepak Chopra when I vote for Obama. I wish I had a better choice than the proverbial douche vs. the turd sandwich, but I don't. And neither will anyone else who is adult enough to accept that the 2-party system

Nicely put. I have to admit I'm pretty much with you on this one too. I have a bit of a soft spot for about 3 classic Springsteen tunes - Born to Run, Jungleland and Rosalita - but I have never been able to get into him on any meaningful level. He sort of has this "ultimate workingman's hero" persona that started out as painfully earnest, but as he became a bigger and bigger star, it was hard to reconcile that with his real life status as a wealthy celebrity. And those sleeveless wifebeaters in the '80s...puh-leeze. I hear that he puts on a great live show, and maybe I don't know what I'm

Believe it or not, I don't like their vocals. I know, I know...I guess that's why it's called a blind spot. Honestly, I barely even like any of Peter Tosh's solo work. For me, the only reggae is the early Bob Marley with the Wailers. I guess it's similar to liking only the first three Beatles albums and no other rock.

This is all true for me, too. Of course, I have to add rap and hip-hop to the list - yes, that includes The Roots - and as far as opera, the only exception I can sort of make is The Barber of Seville, which I have seen twice. However - and this is a big however - I have never sat and listened to the music by itself. If you are opera averse, and want to try to get into it, I would highly recommend seeing that one. Unlike most of the well- known productions, which are probably all doom and gloom, Seville is mainly a comedy. So, it's pretty enjoyable. I have to admit that most reggae also bores

That is great news. I hope they do it soon. I have been waiting for years for something like this, and it better include more than just Lucy Leave and I'm a King Bee!!

The funny thing about Pet Sounds is how much Paul McCartney loved (and still loves) it. A big part of Sgt. Pepper was Paul trying to top Pet Sounds. I think I remember reading an interview where he said it was his favorite album of all time. And Brian Wilson said in an interview that he was totally trying to compete with the Beatles, and that he wrote Pet Sounds basically in response to Rubber Soul. Then, when Sgt. Pepper came out, he said, "Sgt. Pepper kicked our ass."

Sparky, you might not expect to get any support from me, but I totally understand where you're coming from on these issues. I felt the same way about Clinton after his first term (NAFTA! "Don't Ask, Don't Tell!" etc.etc.) I held my nose when I voted for him the second time. What was I going to do, vote for Dole? Unfortunately, the two party system is pretty much the world we have, not the world we want. I thought about that, too, when it was time to vote for either Al Gore or George W. Bush. Of course, not a whole lot of lefties like me voted for Dubya (I'd venture to guess none did), but a

CA ban on same-sex marriage declared "unconstitutional"
Mr. Heartbreak replied to PopTodd's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
Agreed all around. I have the proverbial gay uncle, and he and his partner have been together about 30 years. And the reason they can't get married would be...? -

Aha. Shows how much I know about P-fork, which is to say, essentially nothing.
-
No, it's going to be a steaming pile of shit when it's no longer an option for them to get U2, The Who, The Stones, Paul McCartney or Springsteen.
-
I am not a huge fan of Pitchfork, but I don't think they can be blamed entirely for the seeming divergence of those ratings. It should be noted that the reviews are done by different people, so they really should be viewed as "one reviewer's opinion" as opposed to "Pitchfork's opinion."

The things you listed are all pretty reasonable to very reasonable. A lazy wikipedia search reveals a few of the less appealing aspects of Paul's platform: - cut the top corporate tax rate to 15% (down from 35%) - permanently extend the Bush administration tax cuts - eliminate all foreign aid - considers Social Security unconstitutional - introduced the Sanctity of Life Act, which would have life defined as beginning at conception at the Federal level - In addition to closing the Department of the Interior, his "Restore America" budget plan proposes selling off at least $40 billion worth of

On Ron Paul: snowball, meet Hell. Even the Republican primary voters aren't voting for him on any meaningful level. He should run as a spoiler third party candidate, a la Ross Perot. No way will he get the GOP nomination.

"If people can't use their smartphones, they don't dance"
Mr. Heartbreak replied to sonnyfeeling's topic in Just A Fan
The only time I have used my phone during a Wilco show was to record the setlist. I used to use a pen and paper, and then I realized that the MemoPad function on the Blackberry would work just as well, and I wouldn't have to struggle to see what I was writing. I hate seeing people whip out phones during shows, and I agree with Shug: the author of the piece is either delusional or is promoting more usage of technology. -
Rolling Stone gave it the lead spot in its Album Reviews section and a 4.5 out of 5 stars. (Cue the "Rolling Stone sucks and is irrelevant" trolls.)
-
I'm horrified by it. I download a lot of stuff, and I have never considered filesharing on this level to be "stealing." It's more like trading old Dead bootlegs, except there's no cassette tape involved. Glad I got so much stuff while I could.

I find it very odd that, for some reason, every time someone mentions Rolling Stone magazine on VC, the post somehow devolves into a Rolling Stone bashing fest. Apparently, Nels does not find the magazine "irrelevant" or completely lacking in credibility, as he took the time to write them a very nice thank you letter. Maybe he is well aware that every time Wilco makes a move, RS documents it. For a band that is little known to the general public, they get a lot of press in the mag. As for their articles, unless one is a diehard right-winger (in which case their political coverage will drive

1) Gillian Welch - The Harrow & The Harvest - Tennessee is new song of the year for me. 2) Paul Simon - So Beautiful or So What - Waaay better than expected or even than it should be. 3) Bruce Cockburn - Small Source of Comfort - The instrumentals on this make it my number 4. 4) Wilco - The Whole Love - Pretty, pretty, pretty good. I also checked out Kurt Vile, Dawes, Chris Robinson, the new Bangles, and a few others recommended here and elsewhere, but none really registered as being the definitive #5 pick. Guess it's a tie. I tried to listen to Okkervil River, Fleet Foxes and The Dece

Sarah, I feel your pain, although I have not directly experienced what you have. The fact is, even if Jeff was a total tool, and the band didn't give their fans anything but the music, they would still be a great band...I firmly believe they are the best touring band in America today. The fact that you have had some personal interaction with them, and so have many others, should make your "uber-fan" status understandable at the very least. But honestly, if you're talking to someone who thinks that being played on the radio - in today's shitty market - is the defining sign of quality, well, q

Your top 10 favorite artist/bands...with a slight twist
Mr. Heartbreak replied to remphish1's topic in Someone Else's Song
Bob Dylan (97%) - In the words of George Harrison, "One hundred years from now, Bob Dylan will still be the man." The Beatles (96%) - Pretty much flawless, with the exception of a few of the rather mindless early tracks. Agree that they still don't get enough credit for how revolutionary they were. Frank Zappa (95%) - With the exception of a few late albums, and some annoyingly self-indulgent avant garde orchestral works, FZ's catalog firmly establishes him as one of the towering musical figures of the 20th century. While The Beatles don't receive quite enough credit for how revolutionary
