  1. Ah, Sarah, those poor kids! As much as the foster care system is flawed, I hope those kids were taken away and now live with some form of stability! With the parents cooking, can you imagine how much exposure they had? And that poor newborn sure got off to a rocky start in life. Thank God they didn't wind up burning their house to the ground. How horrible for you to live next to that! Heat, it sounds like meth is thoroughly entrenched in NC. The book makes a strong case for pseudoephedrine (meth's precursor) to be available only by prescription, or for cold medicines to use other formulation
  2. I love that Atlantic piece.
  3. I'm deep into the excellent book "Methland" by Nick Reding....seriously disconcerting, very well researched, but very readable despite the intense subject matter. It got me to wondering whether those of you in other parts of the country, or the world for that matter, see the effects of methamphetamine use around you. It is said that my area is practically the center of the meth universe (southern CA, especially inland of L.A.) and I see local news stories all the time that, even when meth use isn't mentioned, show the hallmarks of people behaving with the classic meth paranoid delusions. I s
  4. dboon is just screwing with you, Dennis. (Knock it off, dboon.) Sarah, I'm agreed that being there about 4 hrs. early is probably enough. Bring water and snacks, but usually the waiting time seems to fly. I've had many great conversations while waiting in line....something about the enforced "unbusyness" creates a nice atmosphere to just enjoy the company of your companions and fellow line-waiters. Return any chairs and other extras to your vehicle well before the doors are set to open, maybe a half-hour in advance. Don't be carrying a purse that will have to be checked, because that'll ho
  5. So, how'd that beery work out for you, Mart? I'm celebratory. We celebrated my Dad's 89th birthday today with a big gathering, and he was showered with love and gifts. Tomorrow two of my sisters are taking him to a Dodgers/Nationals game...they have tickets right behind home plate. Dad knows about the game, but he doesn't know that one sister contacted the Dodgers organization, the "ambassadors" they have....an ambassador will be bringing a bag of Dodger mementos right to their seats sometime during the game. Dad might even get stuff like an autographed baseball! How cool is that??!! I ca
  6. You could almost hurt yourself just watching this lunatic! And try to resist that urge to constantly look up, haha. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xIe6hYAdw_I DO NOT try this at home. Look out, dog at about 00:35!
  7. Charlie, I'm looking into it. Is anyone else experiencing this?
  8. Perhaps we should set a goal of working everybody up to "randy", then maybe we'd reduce everyone's tension levels. Just a thought.
  9. Annoyed. EZ Peel shrimp shouldn't be such a bitch to peel.
  10. The songs have certainly stood the test of time. Hundreds of listens later, they still move me.
  11. So, how's everybody feeling? I just felt like checking in. A one-word answer is preferred, followed by an explanation if you like, or not if you don't. I'll begin: Contemplative
  12. That was wonderful. Thanks for sharing it. Damn, every video puts tears in my eyes.
  13. I know this is already being discussed in the thread titled "The Band", but I thought it deserved to be its own thread. Levon Helm passed away peacefully today. What a huge loss for music, and for all his legions of fans. Rest in peace, Levon. I took this at last June's Solid Sound Festival. So very glad I got to see him perform! Such joy in the music, and in him. I'll remember that performance for my whole life.
  14. Be careful, folks. That's some amazing, terrifying video.
  15. We got a soundboard recording from the Detroit Bar the other night, Sarah...I'll be sharing it with you once it's been tracked. We'll call it a late wedding present. Speaking of weddings, Tom & Sarah's 1st dance was to Patrick's "You're Enough", which he dedicated to them at a show about 2 years back, when they were first engaged. Everything comes full circle!
  16. I suppose you could ask him what color Peter Buck's eyes are, but that'd likely get you a weird look. You can probably come up with something better.
  17. I got to see Patrick play 2 shows over the last weekend, and he did a lot of his new material for his upcoming album. It's sounding very strong! His guitar work always amazes me, and it's better than ever. We heard probably 6 songs that were new, as well as some of the older favorites..."Come What Will" sounded better than ever, "Something Pretty" was exquisite. I'm totally smitten with one of the new songs, called "My Holding Hand is Empty"...gorgeous, softly sung, utterly romantic. I think this is going to be a terrific new album.
  18. This could turn into an interview segment! Or not. I have met Jeff but still have a question. You'd think I'd remember to ask sometime: What the heck color are his eyes? When I've made cover art for bootlegs I've needed to know a couple times and I've never been sure. Gray? Green? They are those sort of eyes that look different in different light, so photos haven't helped. $10 to the first person who can answer this with authority! I'm lying of course, there's no money in it for anybody. After we get this one answered we can work on DBoon's question, and the rest of you.
  19. So sad. Rest in peace, Earl.
  20. I love that! Ah, that's beautiful! Hahaha. Reminds me of: "Never get so open-minded that your brains fall out." Not sure who said that either. These are excellent rules to live by!
  21. Ok I'm nominating that one for Worst Topic Title 2012. Beat you all to it. So corny! But anyway, share some favorite quotes. Old or new, doesn't matter except that you like them. I like this one a lot. "I am an old man and have known a great many troubles, but most of them never happened." - Mark Twain
