What I Did With My Saturday Evening/Sunday Morning
kidsmoke replied to kidsmoke's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
Thanks, dagwave! Wow, Michael, I can only imagine how personal the loss must've felt to you when Challenger exploded. Endeavour was the shuttle built to replace Challenger, as it happens. I remember feeling grateful that the Challenger disaster wasn't a day earlier, since the day before (January 27th) was my birthday. I didn't want "my" date associated with tragedy. Selfish and totally unimportant in the grand scheme of things, I know, but I guess it would be a bit like having a September 11th birthday now. I want to go see Endeavour at the CA Science Center sometime soon, and bring -

Ok, so to finish the telling of my long-winded tale (sorry)! As Endeavor began to make its agonizingly slow way down the first stretch of Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., some of the crowd tagged along as others headed for their cars. We decided to move further down MLK so we went to the car, passing city trucks laden with loads of removed streetlights and traffic signals. They were following the shuttle in case more needed to be removed. The planning for this had taken over a year and everything that could be measured had been, but the crews were prepared for any eventuality. Some trees had ha -
My son Brennan and I were feeling bored & decided to drive into L.A. to catch a club show (Patrick Park @ the Roxy - he was great as always!). As we drove in, I commented, "You know what we ought to do after the show? We should go find the space shuttle!" This was the weekend during which the retired space shuttle Endeavour was being transported from LAX, where it had arrived recently piggybacked onto a jumbo jet, to its permanent home 12 miles away at the California Science Center. How, you may ask? Why, by driving it through the streets of L.A., of course! Have you seen any of the pic

How not to be a loser when meeting the band...

Sure Barb! But remember, if he offers you a tissue, your brains really are leaking, and you have only moments to react. -

I doubt you come off as badly as you imagine, Barb, but I know the feeling! I think part of the "problem" is that Jeff is so fully attentive to whoever he's talking with, and with that direct gaze...it's almost a bit unnerving! Few people are good at really giving someone undivided attention, but Jeff does. Your brains probably aren't actually leaking out your ears though, because gentleman that he is, I'm sure he'd offer you a tissue if they were. I'll bet he comes across a lot of people who are thrilled to meet him but are struck dumb in the moment! patrickhayes, very classy of you to r -

I know exactly what you mean. Politics are never going to be pretty, but I do give Obama credit for trying to behave in a respectful and gracious manner. It must be a real effort sometimes, with what's at stake. -
Nice find! He was great opening for Wilco. I've just dug through to see which albums of his I own on vinyl...I have the original (1976 release) Modern Lovers album, and the Jan. 1977 "Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers", the first album with the new Modern Lovers. Great stuff, especially the first Modern Lovers album!

Has anyone here ever played the political board game called Lie, Cheat and Steal? So much fun, and so much underhanded double-dealing amongst players, who switch allegiances whenever it's advantageous to do so. I ought to dig that out again and teach it to the kids.

I'm so sorry for your loss, Crow. Your tribute to both parents moved me.

Aw, Luke, that's a shame about your SD card, because your recordings are always golden. Hopefully there was another taper in the house. -

I loved this show. High energy, enthusiastic crowd, beautiful venue, and a terrific setlist. (Thanks for the listing, Paul, as always!) Special appreciation to a very professional security/usher staff who nipped several potential problems right in the bud before they could develop. I noticed more than once that they stepped in when someone began behaving rambunctiously (as in, drunkenly) or tried to crowd forward into unclaimed seats, and the staff discreetly steered the individual out, or back to where they belonged, without distracting from the show. Really well done! One tipsy woman made -
I was surprised, too, about the laxness (Is that a word?) on this...my son called to find out whether we could bring in a bit of dinner and the woman told him yes, food and drinks were totally allowed, and my son, being 21, said "Even alcohol?" and she assured him that was fine too. With the average cup of beer at a venue ranging between $8 and $10, we thought this was a pretty sweet set-up! We plan a nice little picnic during the Joanna Newsome's set. Should be beautiful weather in a beautiful setting.

For those of you who may be unfamiliar with the Hollywood Bowl, it is perfectly fine to bring a small cooler and food & drinks (incl. alcohol) and picnic under the CA stars.
-
They are saying that may be exactly the problem...last time the media blew the whole thing up into such a projected nightmare, and then it didn't live up to the scare at all. So now with this much more extensive & much longer piece of construction, the fear is that people will ignore the warnings and just drive as usual. And then there really could be trouble! But no worries, we'll be there even if we have to get out and walk.

Wilco's Hollywood Bowl date gets a mention in this NY Times article about Carmageddon II. This is making me a little nervous. Will I successfully get to the show? More importantly, will Wilco? Preparations for Carmageddon II (Carpocalypse Now)

See you there! You won't regret those reservations. They do.

Which gives me an idea for another thread.
