  1. That was one resolution I did not get to this year - read more Philip K. Dick.
  2. At their heart, the Beatles were one hell of a rock 'n' roll - in the most basic sense - band.
  3. Muswell Hillbillies is a masterpiece, in my opinion. Beautiful melodies and fantastic instrumentation, not to mention some of the best-written songs in Davies' oeuvre.
  4. The book The Children of Men (predates film by 15 years) is supposed to be quite good.
  5. NO. Then she would not come to Hyde Park as much.
  6. In all candor, I would rather see Chelsea Clinton as the new junior U.S. senator from New York rather than Caroline Kennedy.
  7. First ballot, and I tried to f him up with black magic circa 1999 or so.
  8. You have a point there. Probably the best way to listen to Murmur now would be the original vinyl.
  9. I am in the mood for rock, so I hope it rocks and is more uptempo than SBS.
  10. I am not a medieval scholar, but I am pretty sure Dante did not make up hell out of whole cloth.
  11. Bangladesh is not better off than the United States.
  12. With all the translations the Bible has been through, it seems easier to me to believe that God sent his son to earth to be crucified for our sins than the Bible is a completely accurate, unimpeachable source of history. Besides, are not Jews grandfathered in by the old covenant?
  13. I hope Santa brings me a new bong for Christmas.
  14. I do know Episcopalians hold that Jews and Muslims worship the same God Christians do. I am looking for more specific info, but here is this nugget I took from an Episcopal church's website. Will Episcopalians threaten me with eternal damnation in Hell? We like to think that God makes those decisions and that we aren’t privy to them. We share hope in God’s incredibly extensive grace to forgive all repentant people. The prayer book says, "by hell, we mean eternal death in our rejection of God." Note that it does not say, "rejection by God." God rejects nobody, but he will not force us to lov
  15. Close - my sister lives in a circa-1750 Dutch barn that was renovated into a house at the height of the Atari Epoch.
  16. I don't think Episcopalians, or even Catholics now, hold that Jews are going to hell. In fact, our Sunday School class took a trip to a synagogue, and the tone was not, IIRC, "Lookit these fools who will burn in hellfire."
  17. There is no scientific evidence that torture is a reliable method of gathering usable intelligence. The scenario of "Holy shit, there's an atomic bomb somewhere in Duluth and we have to make Habib tell us where it is in TEN MINUTES" sounds a lot more like a TV show plot than an actual contingency to be planned for. We're better than this. I, like the vast majority of Americans, believe in a reality beyond this reality. Jesus was tortured. If we're such a Christian nation, how can we condone torture?
  18. Well, if nothing else, I have a new code word for it.
  19. The Replacements were kind of hit-or-miss live. When I saw them in 1987, they SUCKED until about three-quarters of the way through the show. Then they became one of the awesomest things ever.
  20. Dude won the MVP. A fat contract is just desserts. Not every team has to think like the Marlins, y'know.
