Looking for Jeff quotes on influences or bands he likes
bböp replied to rabramson's topic in Just A Fan
Yep, that's the entry from Listen To This. -
Based on what I've read in this thread and other threads in this forum, people are confident or are at least speculating about them adding another show in Richmond, a show in Brooklyn and another show in Boston. I mean, why don't they just add another show in Tampa and something in between Concord and Hartford as well and make it 21 shows in 21 days? I suppose it's technically possible, but that's not really how Wilco tours anymore. They're not a bunch of 20-year-old kids jumping in a van and playing for gas money. They do take a day off every now and then -- usually at least a few days dur

It's about 10 years old now, but there's a book called Listen To This in which Jeff and a ton of other cool artists cite records that influenced them. Here's a link to the listing on Amazon. I also remember a short Spin feature on "Records That Changed My Life" from a few years back in which Jeff mentions a few pivotal records for him. Can't find a link -- I have a physical copy of it somewhere -- but I'm pretty sure that among the records he cited were the Minutemen's "What Makes a Man Start Fires?" and Slovenly's "Riposte" along with "Between The Buttons" by the Stones. -
The only club I've ever known to buy back a ticket from you was the Bottom Line in New York (RIP). I remember doing that once or twice. You'd go to the box office and they'd give you your money back and then resell the ticket. I do wonder what prevented people from "buying like crazy and then returning like crazy." I think it just wasn't really that kind of place. And it was before the Internet and service fees and automated ticket-getting software made things get out of hand. Of course it's also partly why they're no longer in business. But to your point, B, it does seem like with the adv

Yeah, I was actually there for that one. My first time at the Ryman. As far as the in-state mailing address thing goes, I guess it works for the Pabst and I understand what they're trying to do. But it definitely is a pain for out-of-staters. Having had plans change and important things come up, I just appreciate any system where you're able to be flexible without being penalized for it. (For example, why every airline can't operate like Southwest with respect to change fees is beyond me. Obviously most airlines are trying scrape as much $$$ out of you as possible.) My point with respect

You're going to get your ticket, I can pretty much assure you. Or at least you won't be out any money. StubHub makes sellers give a credit card to guarantee tickets, so if they're fake tickets or they somehow don't live up to their end of the bargain, then the seller would be liable. I've actually had decent experiences on the few occasions I've used StubHub (both buying and selling, though I've never done it with Wilco tickets). I'd much rather sell an extra ticket on there versus Craigslist where people can -- and do -- flake at the last minute and screw you over. As far as the morality of

They're scheduled to perform that night at a tribute show as part of a gala honoring Neil Young, who's receiving this year's MusiCares Person of the Year award. A bunch of people are scheduled to perform at it. More info here. There's also a thread on this somewhere else in the Just A Fan forum. I think the public can actually buy tickets to the event, but they are pricey -- like more than $1000 per ticket.

For what it's worth, I noticed that too. I've never seen that at any other venue where they've distinguished between GA orchestra and GA pit -- the closest to that I've experienced is something like at the Wiltern in LA where they give wristbands to x number of people for the closest section of the floor -- but I agree it would suck if you bought tickets through Wilco's presale (for which only Presale GA was offered) and you couldn't get to the "pit" section. To me, it seemed like they weren't really selling those "pit" GA tickets (because the drop down menu only listed one ticket available

yeah, those went quick. that place is pretty small, i know, but it's been a while since tickets have gone that fast that i can remember.

Nope, I'm still just bbop. That's a pretty nice run of shows, though, if it all pans out.

I'm actively looking for a copy of Penn's great solo debut record "Nobody's Fool" on vinyl, if anybody happens to stumble across it.

I'm sure you're probably joking, but in case you're not, this actually isn't true. Mike's dad was the late Joe Jorgensen, a very respected recording engineer. More info on him here.

If you mean the origin of the song, it's just a song they apparently sing at Jeff's kids' school (which is why he has played it at the benefit shows for that school).

The Second City That Never Sleeps; Letters To Santa
bböp replied to heather whinna's topic in Just A Fan
Ooh, I would do just about anything for a Kogi (short rib) burrito. I'll see what I can do Ms. Y! I think I would like to try throwing footballs at Joe Canale's privates this year as well. -

I'm very much looking forward to BabyCo, as I do every year. (BPB at 6 am should be pretty interesting too, and that Jeff guy as well. ) -
I was not perplexed, fwiw. And I hope that the Zwarte Piet bonanza and especially that weird croquette made it an extra special day for you!

A pretty loose, fun show to wrap up the year (one which Jeff jokingly said Wilco dominated, or something to that effect). Of course it was a special show for several reasons, including the 30th birthday of a certain VC moderator, which Jeff acknowledged at the start of the first encore as he led a happy birthday singalong to Brianne and noted that she "didn't look a day over 12," before dedicating "Via Chicago" to her. It was also the 15th anniversary of Wilco's first live show, which I think had pretty much zero effect on tonight's set but which Jeff also mentioned. I think even Jeff, thoug

For those not well versed (or at all versed) in Christmas traditions of the Netherlands, like me before this trip, that would be translated as 'Black Piet,' who is a companion of Saint Nicholas. Zwarte Piet is apparently black because of the soot from climbing down chimneys with presents for the children. Yes, it is kind of weird to see a parade with a Santa Claus figure and bands of black-faced guys running around throwing candy, which happened here the other day.

It's actually the 17th now. But yeah, you're right -- the gig was on Nov. 16. Oops! Anyway, I fixed it. Thanks for the correction. It's late here.
-
Just so this doesn't get more confusing than it already is, since the other Paradiso thread refers to the show there two and a half years ago (even though I know some posts at the end were about tonight's show) and the lengthy webcast live thread in Just A Fan doesn't have the complete setlist, here's exactly what was played at tonight's gig: Ashes of American Flags Remember The Mountain Bed Company In My Back Bull Black Nova You Are My Face IATTBYH> One Wing A Shot in the Arm Side With The Seeds Deeper Down Impossible Germany Passenger Side Handshake Drugs Sonny Feeling Jesus, etc. (crow

Some great friends and great acoustics made for a killer evening. Must get some sleep, though, so for now, just the setlist as played: Ashes of American Flags Remember The Mountain Bed Company In My Back Bull Black Nova You Are My Face IATTBYH> One Wing A Shot in the Arm Side With The Seeds Deeper Down Misunderstood Impossible Germany Via Chicago California Stars Handshake Drugs Sonny Feeling Jesus, etc. Hate It Here I'm The Man Who Loves You Hummingbird ------------------------ The Late Greats Heavy Metal Drummer Poor Places> Reservations> Spiders (Kidsmoke) -----------------------

I tried to post this last night after the show, but I guess it didn't go through. I'm sure about three people were waiting in anticipation. Anyway, what I wrote basically was that the Florence crowd was a little tamer than I thought it would be. That might have had to do with the very posh, beautiful theater setting. Nobody got up until Jeff asked them to toward the end of Spiders. I didn't even see that many heads bobbing on the main floor. I base my some of my expectations on footage I've seen of Italian crowds from Springsteen shows in stadiums, and obviously I didn't expect that here, but

Back to the Wilcos...I also forgot to mention, for the nerds out there, that Glenn was sporting a Swiss wristband (red with a white cross).

Sorry 'bout that, Greg. Internet access is kinda spotty over here (unless you want to constantly pay), so I haven't been able to chime in with much... Here's a stream-of-consciousness bit for you for now: I think the Backstreets recap is pretty solid, as always. Honestly, I do wonder if that might be only time we ever get the record start to finish because it's so long. We were sitting behind the stage and it was kind of cool to see Max wail away and some of the backline (Tallent, Bittan, etc.) that you sometimes miss from the front. To me, it was a little tough to sustain the energy for the

Nice to be back on board... No support act. Jeff didn't say all that much, except to note that they had played this venue like five years ago and no one had been at that gig (and also that Portugal had won some sort of big football match today, so maybe that kept all the Swiss home--the show was not a sellout). He also mispronounced the German word for some sort of festival (carnival?) that started today. He also said that the Swiss had sung much better than the Germans on Jesus, etc., and tried to convince people yelling out for "Freebird" that Lynyrd Skynyrd didn't really exist in Switze
