Dan-O
I dont think private individuals (ie. huge corporations) have done any better job with healthcare in this country than many foreign gvts have. In fact we're almost unanimous in this country today (how common is that these days?) that our healthcare system is completely in the gutters.I don't think you can make the claim that today's health care system isn't largely controlled by the government. unclepunk
Hey, I thought that was really well-written. I liked his post better than mine. Mine was just more direct.
mpolak21
i'm upset that the commercials don't feature wilco members driving around in their v-dubs Yeah I could see Nels driving around in a jetta, while playing the solo to Ashes. JUDE
Mods, can I get my member title change to this? Nazis, global warming, Fugazi, marketing, socialism, NASCAR, sad little status seeking upwardly mobile sales reps, Canada, censorship, health care, and truth, justice and the American Way. Dan-O
You make a pretty big leap on logic right there. One could easily argue that access to health care is vital to ensuring the right to life (especially), liberty and the pursuit of happiness.No. The distinction is in the definition of the word "right." A right is something that can't be taken away. Thus, your right to life means that an individual can't take away your life. It does not obligate an individual to sustain your life. Also, do you think that health care, as it is right now, is working well? Not at all. But as I said, the current health care system is largely controlled by the government. aricandover
It's not about hate - it's about beliefs. I bet you people would react differently if they were doing commercials for the NRA or NASCAR or some such thing. I couldn't care less one way or the other.
JUDE
For the record, I could totally see Jeff and the band doing a NASCAR tie in song, that and a video paying homage to Tron.

bjorn_skurj
Socialized medicine is not THE answer. It's AN answer and, in my opinion, a bad one since it goes against the concept of individual liberty. And as far as the government spending money on defense... that is actually one of the true functions of government. That doesn't mean I support the current war (which I don't) and it doesn't mean they don't over-spend on defense (which they do). If you want to continue this discussion, I'm all for it... if you should start a thread about Socialism and the proper role of government in the non-music section, I'll join you. I don't want to take this thread off topic any further.Dude, we HAVE socialized medicine in this country, and we pay for it at minibar prices. It's called "the emergency room." boredintheusa
Who gives a shit? Wilco are the best, that song is awesome and now more people can hear it.
nettles
Tony M. is a brilliant manager, there is nothing wrong with making money in the music BUSINESS, there is however an ethical line you shouldn't cross and where that line is drawn is up to the artist.
mox1
oh please. get over yourselves people.wilco makes great records. VW makes great commercials. and cars that are fun to drive.leave it at that.by signing with a major label, one could argue that a band is "selling out". i'd rather hear a wilco song in a well-crafted smart, creative VW commerical then hear one of their songs on a crappymainstream radio station. let it be.and be thankful that you can be entertained watching a VW spot with Wilco instead of some cheesy awful track that was constructed bya commerical composer with bad taste. honestgabe
You know who's a sellout? Fucking Michaelangelo. The ceiling of the Sistine Chapel just doesn't strike me with any emotion, and its just empty and commercial. If Pope Julius didn't commission Michaelangelo to do the ceiling, well then...I'd appreciate it more. But alas, Michaelangelo sold out to the bible machine and sold his art to promote religion. Fuck him!

boywiththorninside
what does "n.p. Kicking Television" at the bottom of that release mean? Now playing the song that features "stop shopping...stop buying things" lyrics. Can't help but think that is an attempt to needle those bothered by the ads. Good stuff. VW makes great commercials. and cars that are fun to drive. i'd rather hear a wilco song in a well-crafted smart, creative VW commerical then hear one of their songs on a crappymainstream radio station. Wilco does make great records. Judging by these efforts, VW makes the opposite of great commercials. And if you think an over-priced, under-powered, cramped car that breaks down at random is fun to drive, maybe giveS&M, marriage or prison a try...all at the same time. is this someone from the ad agency that shit out these turds? I haven't been counting but Diebold has and the votes are ~9 to 1 against these being good ads.
EL the Famous
I can throw a million commercials at you 100X worse than these are...and the agency that has worked on a majority of these spots have done a phenomenal job in reinvigorating the VW brand over the past 6-7 years. You may not like them personally, but this thread is hardly a legitimate sample of their effectiveness.
