Weezer: Album Six

Recommended Posts

This is turning out to be a great day. I just picked up the excellent new Ryan Adam's album along with Elliott Smith's Either/Or, and now this...

Hey Party-People,

Weezer is just polishing up a batch of songs for a recording session that is going to start at the beginning of July. This will be the final recording session for our 6th album which we aim to put out in the first half of 2008. We hope you are all having good times.

Love,

R-dawg

After Make Believe, I really thought there might not ever be another weezer album. The use of lines from Shakespeare's The Tempest in the liner notes for that album made it seem like it was weezer's swan song. I'm glad to see it wasn't.

Honestly, I'm not excited about this.

I didn't get their last album. The last time I bought a Weezer album was in 10th grade, right when my love for them pretty much peaked. I still like their first two albums a great deal, but otherwise, they have put out stuff that hasn't interested me much at all. I'll see what happens, maybe this will be an improvement.

At this point, the only thing that could get me interested in a new Weezer album would be the return of Matt Sharp.

Their output since Pinkerton obviously hasn't measured up to the first two albums, but that's a pretty tall order. I really liked the Green Album, thought Maladroit had its moments, and like almost all of Make Believe. I know there are a lot of fans out there who want another Pinkerton, but I already own that album, so I hope they do something new. (Kind of like how I already own YHF, so I'm glad Wilco made SBS.)

It's interesting that each new album tarnishes weezers name that much more in a shorter runtime. I still listen to pinkerton occasionally, that's about it.

That's how it's worked with me, too. I remember being sort of excited for Maladroit to come out. I can't imagine feeling that way now, particularly after that cringe-inducing Theme to Hell's Gate, "Beverly Hills".

You know... Weezer was the first band I ever got REALLY into. I still believe if I didn't buy The Green Album, when I was 14, I wouldn't be into any of the music I am now. However, I much prefer Matt Sharp's music to Rivers Cuomo's. The Rentals' new song is better then any single Weezer has released since the 90s.

Also I think everyone should check out Matt Sharps solo album cause it's really good, mellow, folk.

In like all of their albums. There I said it.

I actually had a dream last night that they released a new album and it was really good. Crazy dreams...

Have a dream about NMH tonight, maybe we'll get some good news tomorrow.

No doubt, they really lost their uniqueness after he left. Blue Album > Pinkerton were great, then no Matt Sharp and the last 3 albums were very sub-par. Funny though, I like the Rentals, they just don't match up to Weezer for me.

i think even rivers knows that weezer peaked with pinkerton. maybe after listening to "beverly hills" over and over he decided to not let that be the swan song of a once decent band. i hope they can offer something better than that before they go back into obscurity and rivers goes back to harvard for his doctorate. btw: "beverly hills" insults the intelligence of fans of the first two albums. they are capable of so much more than what was on make believe. green wasn't horrible, but i can't even listen to most of maladroit and it just got worse from there imo. i agree they lost a lot more than just a bass player when matt left.

Right on... When he left, the band was never the same.. Green album was OK, Maladriot was OK.. Maybe even a hair better than The Green Album, and then Make Believe was garbage.. I think RockStarism just went to Rivers Cuomo's head and he doesn't put his soul into writing anymore... Sad because I used to be the biggest Weezer fan in the world...

My undertanding is that Rivers Cuomo poured his heart and soul into Pinkerton -- then it got panned. To the best of my recollection, Rolling Stone called it the worst album of 1996. So I think Cuomo just figured, "Fuck this" and decided pop garbage was easier to write. I was a big time Weezer fan up unitl the Green Album. That's the last one I bought.

Doubtful that Rivers thought that when a Decade later, Pinkerton gets tons of recognition, then he puts out another shit album. I'm pretty sure he knows people will be listening to and discussing Pinkerton for years to come and not talking about the last 3 albums.

what really weighs Green down is that there is practically a formula for each song - same type of solo, etc. the only ones that break that mold are the singles. i have read that Rivers studied Kurt Cobain's songwriting trying to write the perfect song, and he numbers them all, so it's sort of like he manufactures them and cranks them out like an assembly line.

i thought Maladroit was pretty good. Green had some good songs, but probably would have worked better as an EP. Make Believe had some ok stuff, too, but is a little too 'pop sheened' or something.

That's a perfect description of Green.. It does have some good songs on it though "Simple Pages" "Photograph".. But it does have that assembly line feel.. I was quite impressed with Maladroit though.. You can tell that Rivers worked hard on that album.. It doesn't have the feeling and soul that Pinkerton or Blue have, but you can tell he put some work into it, unlike Green.. But yeah, Make Believe is just bad... The only song that I kind of like on that album is "The other way".. All the others are just.. almost laughable..

I really hope that Rivers tries to go back to his old style and put some soul into the new album.. They almost lost me as a fan with Make Believe, but I think I'll give them another chance..

I should note that I would also be interested in a new Weezer album if the "new" album in question was that Songs From the Black Hole thing (although I'm not sure how much of that was ever finished/didn't end up on Pinkerton).

My take is that Matt Sharp is actually the song writing connoiseur. He left Weezer after the Pinkerton album, and so did the whimsical tunage (there are a few exceptions ie "Island In the Sun"). I think it's apparent when you listen to the 1st Rentals album that he was definetly the witty specialist.

p.s. Pinkerton is my fave Weezer album

i remember he put up an mp3 of one of the Black Hole songs (remember when they used to post new song demos all the time on weezer.com?) and it sounded pretty cool. maybe they'll do a special edition for Pinkerton like they did with the self-titled and include this stuff.
