I think the album's hilarious. I can't believe all of the hate. It's nothing amazing, but it's still funny and doesn't deserve all of the bashing it gets from weezer "fans" and critics.

This is the mindset you have to have when listening to this. I think it is a blast.

The poster above got the wrong REM album - New Adventures in Hi-Fi is the criminally underrated member of the REM discography. This was the last album with Bill Berry on board, and it also totally vindicates the artistic direction they had taken on Monster by incorporating the best elements of the glam-rock/celebrity culture skewering themes into the broader REM palette.

You may have a point. I bought that soon after it came out, but haven't listened to it (or Monster) for a long time. I just began to associate Monster and NAIHF with the post-Berry era, but I do recall liking several songs on each CD when they 1st came out.

Exactly. It's like they want to make an album that is musically trash just to make a point that they don't give a crap about what people think so they're just going to have fun with the music.

Pretty much all of Carla Bozulich's work is criminally underrated. Her remake of Willie Nelson's Redheaded Stranger is wonderful, possibly even better than the original (which is saying a lot, since I love Willie Nelson and I love that album), and the first Geraldine Fibbers album is a classic, if not the second one, too. I think her most underrated work is Evangelista's latest album. It's dark and haunting but stunningly beautiful, too. Probably one of my favorite albums of not just this year but the last few years.

I do think Up is somewhat underrated nowadays - when it came out I loved it for a period, then soured on it (the next two REM records were sort of responsible for that) and then I went back and listened to it again a couple of months ago and had my opinion of it rehabilitated somewhat. But New Adventures, THAT is a great album.

By the way, we are talking about a band that, for most of my musically-aware life, could do no wrong so take what I say on the topic of REM with a grain of salt.

I agree 100% with all of the above.

Other underrated records...

Rocket from the Crypt- Circa:Now! (Scream, Dracula, Scream gets the accolades and the airplay, but give this one a chance; it's simply one great rock song after another)

M. Ward- Transistor Radio

Centro-matic- Distance and Clime (fans tend to overlook this one for some reason)

The Who- The Who By the Numbers

Bruce Springsteen --- Lucky Town

The backlash from Bruce dismissing the E Street Band combined with the Over produced LA sound of Human Touch (released on the same day as LT) led to this gem being somewhat dismissed. Guitars galore, Personal and intimate songs and production that doesn't get in the way of the songs.

The 92 tour and band were unfairly criticized. This was a very good backing band and a really energetic tour.

Frank Black - Teenager of the Year.

As good as this is, I think his Fast Man, Raider Man gets little/no recognition and it's pretty damn good. Escpecially the Fast Man part.

I'll put a vote in for Shawn Mullins' 9th Ward Pickin' Party, too, for this category.
