The Black Crowes

Guest Wilco Rules Me

Hi everyone new to the board. Big fan of Wilco and The Black Crowes.

I remember the Crowes and Tweedy did a cover of the song Willin. I think during the Further Festival days.

Anyway,

3 Snakes is the name of the game for me.

Best song has to be Nonfiction.

I am not to happy with Adam on the keys. In studio he is ok, but live just terrible (for the Crowes catalog)

Luther is ok, but sometimes less is good. Ford knew that, not sure if Luther does.

Anyway excited to see what happens at the end of the month for Cabin Fever.

Warpaint does not do it for me either. Better than Lions, not better than BYS and BYS is lower on the charts for me when comparing Crowes records.

Whoa Mule

Gold

Josephine

Evergreen (Steve is great on this song. Well he is great on every song but stands out big here)

are good songs.

Daughters

Movin on Down

are ok

Of all the great covers they do, I thought God's Got It was a weak choice.

As for the other songs, I skip them.

I do have high expectations, so I think that is also a problem.

I taped that off of TV when they did it on Saturday Night Live - before it was released. It's one of favorite songs also. The video use to be on Youtube.

That is when he was wearing the feather's jacket?

When he really did look like a Crow?

How do y'all feel about Live at the Greek. I really enjoy this album, however I think the sound is a little muffled sounding

I like it enough to have gone out and gotten several more shows with Page & the Crowes all different, all very fun to listen to. I have the original Music Maker version, I have no clue how it stands up to the other release except that they have one or two different songs.

"She" like the Gram Parsons tune? Wow.

Crowes have covered that tune so much it is almost like their own now.

I think I first heard them cover it on national airwaves in 1994 during the Amorica release. Either that or 1996 for Three Snakes.

Somebody has a torrent of the show.

Things get pretty rough over in the Black Crowes forum. He also added that it is a marijuana brownie type of album.

Here is his quick review:

first impressions

if you don't care about my opinion, then don't read this thread...thanks.

OVERALL: It's sleepy and rootsy americana. In the school of WARPAINT, I feel this album will split Amorican opinions like never before.

Aimless Peacock - very nice....but yes, pretty aimless......'Song For Everyone To Sing' chanting in the middle makes me think of it as "Why Don't We Sing This All Together" (Stones). It's not really a song as much as it a vibe. Just think sitars.

Greenhorn - Incredibly mellow. There's Gold In The Hills meets Tim Buckley "Song For You' Pretty..but honestly....a bit of a snooze. Pretty pedal steel. (make sure you bring your 'brownies' to Cabin Fever, so far). On 2nd listen it gets better.

The Shady Grove - 'Downtown Money Waster" meets The Beatles. Also sounds like the Band. I'm not loving it. Also borrows from the 'with your record on, so let's go out and play" vibe in MODTL.

Shine Along - straight up bluegrass....it's OK, I guess. It'll make for decent background music, I suppose. This is absoultely Warpaint 2 so far, but without any sign of "rockers" Nothing has floored me yet...or even smile. Sorry. At best, it's Ok and is best before bedtime. '09 Crowes shows are gonna be weird. They should all be sit down affairs based on this.

What Is Home? - Rich on vocals.. I dig it. Mellow Zep-esque. Best tune so far. (Note: I love "Paper'). Finally something I really dig on this, to be honest.

Fork In The River - CR still singing about Locusts. Sounds like "Locust St." brother.

Roll Old Jermimiah - straight up country...Nice Pedal Steel.. Song is just kinda there. It's a country song...the type that sounds like a lot of country songs. I don't love it. I think Gorman is playing brushes. Pedal Steel is the best part about it. Ugh....honestly.

Houston Don't Dream About Me - everything is starting to sound the same. mid tempo , this one. Honestly, it just came and went as I listened.

Kept My Soul - sounds like "Ventilator Blues' (Stones) meets a more laid back "Walk Beleiver Walk", it's alright. Pretty good.. 2nd fave song so far.

Make Glad - uptempo...a bit of white boy funk. Pretty Good. Some nice jamming by Luther. Make that 3 songs I like.

And The Band PLayed On - i have no opinion of this song....it has lyrics like "Let's All Gather Around the Grand Piano.....and makes use of the phrase 'Jolly Good"

So Many Times - Slow acoustic ballad, pedal steel...Rich and Chris sharing vocals......think "You Don't Miss Your Water' styled vocal harmonies......not bad....just sleepy like the rest of this material which makes it tough to stand out.

Dolphins - I love Dolphins and I'm glad it might be on a Crowes record. Nice jam at the end by Luther.

They did not allow tapping.

Some ass thought he did not have to respect the wishes of others.

I like Warpaint I just wish the lyrics for some of the songs were not so.. um.. out there and generic if that makes any sense.

I am looking forward to their new direction also.

Yes, I knew that. You mentioned a torrent in your post. I would not be surprised if one pops up. The Brothers of A Feather shows were also not suppose to be AUD taped - but they were.

No setlist for Feb 22nd. I have learned that there was a actually a torrent of the 21st or the 22nd show up for a time at bt.etree. It got removed, of course. Some people managed to get it though - so it is out there. I don't have it, but hope to find a copy somewhere.

i'm looking forward to this after reading that description. i loved warpaint.

the crowes from now on will probably always be a bit more mellow. it feels like chris' solo stuff with a bit more rock. i'm ok with that.

With a steady diet lately of Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver, Blitzen Trapper, it would sure be nice to have the Crowes come out with a rocking "Amorica" type album but I suppose those days are gone. I will have to get my good old rock fix somewhere else.

I don't know if it something I need to have, but I will probably buy it. I am still trying to track down the Feb 2009 show that was out there to snag for a while. From what I have found, it was on a few BT sites before being taken down. If anyone has any leads, let me know. I spent some time searching for it on Saturday, but found nothing.

Yeah, I did not grab it before they yanked it, either.
