Was just listening to a take of "Greatest Story Ever Told" and realized why I like some of Bob's songs so much. Its because on many of them Jerry just rips it the whole way through the tune, no holding back.

I was bummed when Keith left the band but I enjoyed the harmonies Brent sung. I never have gotten into Brents tunes. Over time I came to enjoy his keyboard playing but Keiths period with the band is still my favorite keyboard sound. My order of preference is Keith, TC, Hornsby, Pig, Brent and Vince.

I'm a not a huge fan of the Brent tunes (but I can get into Easy to Love You now and then), but I'm a huge fan of Brent. Without his energy during the low points in the '80s, things would've been a lot uglier. Some of my favorite recordings are from '87-'90, when a post-coma Jerry got his act together, the Dead found a spring in their step, and Brent was ripping his organ. My order (based on preference for the keyboardist, not the era in which they played) goes Brent, Hornsby, Pig, Keith, Vince, TC. Vince wasn't THAT bad.

I just picked up The Deadhead's Taping Compendium, Volume III for about 74 bucks. I have not seen it that low in quite some time. I happened to be checking my Amazon list and noticed the price drop. The condition was described as "very good". I hope that is true.

I'd certainly hope so! For 74 bucks it should be mint. I think the price tag on mine was 35, but then I'm assuming the books are all out of print now.

Some of those cats who wrote reviews in those books became tape trading buddies of mine. Barry Barnes in particular turned me onto a lot of NRPS SBDs.

Taper's Section (February 1 - February 7, 2010)

Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where as promised we'll be playing you music from the 1980s this week, specifically music from 1981 and 1989.

Our first stop this week is on 8/12/81 in Salt Lake City at the Salt Palace. An odd personal anecdote about the Salt Palace: On the summer tour of 1990, I had a little over a week to kill between Eugene on 6/24 and Kansas on 7/4, and I found myself in Salt Lake City. Big, wide, clean streets, I recall. Being such a Dead Head taper, I knew about the Salt Palace from a crappy audience recording I had from 2/28/73 (later Dick's Picks 28!). I stumbled upon the arena, and was happy to see what it looked it. The area around the arena was deserted, but I tried one of the doors, and amazingly it was open. I walked into the arena, and found myself on the floor of an NBA basketball arena, surrounded by 12,000 people watching TV in the dark. Eerily surreal. An announcement was made, and a huge cheer went up; it was an arena filled with people watching the NBA entry draft on closed circuit TV, with the cheer being the response to Utah's selection. From the Salt Palace 81 we have Space>Spanish Jam>Morning Dew, a high energy jam featuring a very well-developed Spanish Jam.

Next up, from the Grateful Dead's only appearance in Scotland, at the Edinburgh Playhouse on 9/30/81, we have the opening of the second set, featuring Feel Like A Stranger, Ship of Fools, Samson and Delilah, Never Trust A Woman. This was the tour opener, and there was plenty of great music played over the next two+ weeks in Europe.

Finally this week, we have the entire first set from the penultimate (!) show of a three night run at Cal Expo in Sacramento on 8/5/89, featuring One More Saturday Night ; Cold Rain And Snow ; We Can Run ; Stagger Lee ; Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again ; Row Jimmy ; Let It Grow. All three of these concerts were excellent, and would be followed up by three great shows at the Greek a week and a half later, the final Greek shows as it turns out. Thankfully they kept playing at Cal Expo for a few more years.

Check back next week for music from 1988, 1990 and 1992 as keep the winter blues at bay with more excellent Grateful Dead music. Feel free to write the email address below; your input, questions and comments are always appreciated.

I'm probably biased toward '81 (the year I first saw the band), but that is SUCH a good year - imo no year after that tops it. That 8/12 show is a really good one - both sets smoke.

Ditto! First show was New Haven that spring. Satisfaction encore, Minglewood opener.

You?

I got a little head start on both of you. First saw the Jerry Garcia Band in July 1980 and the Dead in Providence on 9/4/80. The show in Boston in the spring of '81 was really good. I remember being blown away by Bird Song ...

I am so into the acoustic set of the Harpur College show that I often forget about The Other One>Cryptical Envelopment on disc two. Amazing.

You know you got it bad when all you have to do is see the venues name to know the date of that particular show. ;-)

Why are things always do weird around here?

I got the book I ordered yesterday. It is in pristine condition - except for a corner piece missing from one page. There is no text missing, so I can live with that. I lucked out twice. Now, I want to find a Volume 1 to replace the beat up copy I bought.

Great show: "everybody just relax man we have you all night long...?

Buddy of mine in high school and I used to get a huge kick out of the goofy dude in the crowd saying "Jerry, play St. Stephen" and JG cracking up. That was on the tape we had, don't know if it made it onto better recordings....

It's on the Dick's Picks (Volume 8) release. That is right before Phil starts yelling at people to stop yelling. I think.

Hoping the power stays on! :cheers

That's a really great run, Aman. It's such a shame that The Beach Boys' set isn't included - that is a really fun run of tunes.

I'm jamming Ladies and Gentlemen... the Grateful Dead (until the power goes out).

This is the Fillmore East 71 show with the lyrical goof/laughter in "St. Stephen," correct? If so, I was listening to that official release on Friay night for the first time and the track listing seemed off to me. I didn't check my DeadBase but recall the tape I have of the show had tunes in a different order. Is the official release track listing true to the actual order or has it been fucked with?
