Your top concerts of 2009!

Biggest disappointment for me was, sad to say, Wilco. Their date at Hill Auditorium here in Ann Arbor was without a doubt the weakest Wilco show I've seen. They seemed distracted, and got pretty sloppy during a few songs, which is something I'd never before witnessed from this band. Some muffed notes, less-than-solid tempos, and a couple of instances where parts of the band were a half beat off from the rest of the band. It was their last non-Chicago show of that leg of the tour, and rather than being pumped, they just seemed drained, going through the motions one last time before they got to sleep in their own beds.

It was a good year for shows:

PJ Harvey - June 17 at the Moore, Seattle - no question it was best show of the year for me

Joey Burns and John Convertino (Calexico);opening for Neko Case - they were better - June 2 at the Pantages in Tacoma

Robyn Hitchcock and the Venus 3 twice, at the Triple Door March 21, and returning to the newly revamped Crocodile in October

Gillian Welch and David Rawlings headlining the No Depression festival July 11 at Marymoor Park, Redmond, WA, and great performances by many other bands, including Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hearafter and a solo performance by Sam Beam (Iron and Wine)

David Byrne at the Paramount in June (June was a good month for shows here!)

Son Volt at Neumos, Seattle, best surprise of the year - really, really good just a few weeks ago in early December

Biggest disappointment - Bob Dylan at a surprise show at the Moore - really small venue for him, but just not a great show

Best non-musical show - attending a live taping of the Daily Show with Jon Stewart in New York, and getting to personally ask him a question in his pre-show warm up with the studio audience

6. Monotonix at Logan Square Auditorium. Sweaty, ungodly hairy Tel Aviv madmen (banned in every venue in Israel) pushing their brand of balls-to-the-walls rock upon a receptive audience of substance abusers. Beer slip 'n slides and a the possibility you will carry a half naked Borat look-alike on your shoulders is par for the course. Who needs drugs when there are bands like this out there.

Heck yeah. Saw them open for the Silver Jews this year in Denver. Wow. I was impressed. Had never heard of them up to that point and was pretty blown away. Jews were awesome, too.

My two favorite shows were both in Tulsa -- Paul McCartney and The Avett Brothers.

I saw Wilco for the sixth and seventh times (OKC and Dallas). Those shows were great, of course, but a bit of a letdown after the unforgettable Cain's show in 2008.

I also enjoyed Son Volt, M. Ward, Andrew Bird and Blitzen Trapper.

2. TV on the Radio w/ Grizzly Bear at Tabernacle Atlanta Ga

3. Eddie Vedder Solo at Cobb Energy Center Atlanta GA

Saw band of horses last night. What a fantastic show. They ended it by bringing all their firends and family in the audiance on stage (about 30-40 people) and singing We Are the World. The crowd ate it up.

aside from Skeletonwitch, did you check out any other bands who were playing inside? Converge was crazy, Trash Talk was fun, i dug the intricate riffing of Krallice, and 1349 were cool. the small stage upstairs (purgatory?) was always too jammed, but i did see Harvey Milk for a song or two.

Favorite shows 2009:

Travis in Frankfurt, Feb 9th

Morrissey in Offenbach, May 10th or so

Razorlight in Offenbach, Sept 13th

Wilco in London was ok too, they played loads of Summerteeth that night

Biggest disappointment: As usually Bruce Springsteen, July 3rd or so, Frankfurt. One of the truly worst nights of my entire life, I spent about 2 hours of it sobbing uncontrollably because everything and mostly Mr. Superstar sucked so badly.

Biggest show to come: Kevin Costner & Modern West, March 15th, Offenbach. Can't friggin' wait :dancing

Drive-By Truckers

2/20, 2/21 @9:30 Club, Washington, D.C.

6/3 @Bourbon Street Ballroom, Baltimore

8/22 @The National, Richmond

I love all of these DBT shows for different reasons. The first two: Patterson Hood is great, but it was amazing to have Mike Cooley as the frontman. How many bands can lose their lead singer and still bring it for two nights in a row? The third: I was unemployed and trying to save money, and one of my favorite bands plays a free show two miles from my house. And free didn't mean any less energy or goodness than any other DBT show. The fourth: It just freakin' rocked.

Others I really enjoyed:

Devendra Banhart 11/25 @9:30 Club

Fleet Foxes 7/29 @9:30 Club

Wilco 7/10 @Frawley Stadium, Wilmington, Del.

The Hold Steady 6/7 @9:30 Club

Neko Case 4/8 @9:30 Club

if he usually sucks ... why did you go back?

Broken Social Scene w/ Stars, Feist, Metric etc. @ Harbourfront Centre, Toronto

I've seen most of these other bands people are listing, but never BSS. This is one of those shows that could be great, or just a clusterfuck mess. Hope it was the former...

I assume Leslie, Amy & Emily all fronted BSS for their respective songs? Which ones did they play?

Soul Asylum at a private show at the Opera club in Atlanta.

Cost $0, and I was basically 4 feet from Dan the whole show, and even chatted with him between songs.

That night was ruined when some ATL cops hit me on the head with a flashlight and arrested me on BS charges.

Cost $1,100, and 12 hours with Atlanta's most polite criminals (honestly, they were cool to me).
