2010 MLB - Playoffs and hot stove!

Recommended Posts

Point being: how is someone like the Twins going to do any better with a 7 game playoff for a DS? It stretches most teams built on a powerful 3 main rotation, but I really don't think it would help any team that would lose three straight.

Twins lost 3 straight in both the 1987 and 1991 World Series, both of which they won.

Expanding the playoffs is all about the Benjamins.

Interesting stat: Teams are always after pitchers who can pitch 200 innings. Feix Hernandez pitched 249 2/3 innings this season and 209 of those were scoreless innings. He's pitching more shutout innings than most pitchers pitch in total innings.

A question has arisen about Benji Molina: There is a league championship ring and a World Series ring. Benji Molina played for both the Giants and the Rangers in 2010. Is Molina, guarenteed one ring for being on the American league champions or does he also receive one for playing on the Giants in the National league? Does he also get a World Series ring should San Fransisco end up victorious?

I think I heard he gets a ring either way.

Twins lost 3 straight in both the 1987 and 1991 World Series, both of which they won.

The Twins are currently 2nd in consecutive post season losses.

12 games: Oct. 6, 2004-Oct. 9, 2010

Twins Win 1 Vs New York Yankees in 2004.

Oakland Sweep in 2006.

New York Yankees Sweep in 2009.

New York Yankees Sweep in 2010.

I respect what they did in 87 & 91, but the point that I am trying to make is how are they going to beat a team if they are the type of team that recently has gone 3 and out. Is their # 4 pitcher going to beat the opposing teams # 4 pitcher? It's possible, but I think you need to look at how the Rangers built their monster of a team this year to go through both the Rays and Yankees.

As The High Heat pointed out it is indeed all about the benjamins. I am sure that it is eating up the MLB that most of these 5 game series only end up getting to a game 3. By making it into a 7 game series you are automatically adding an extra "must have" game to garner revenue.

And for the record I feel that the Twins beat themselves in Game 1 this year against Sabathia and kind of lost hope after that. And I also think that the Twins had a very decent pitching staff, but there always is a team that is better. I don't know what they can do to make themselves better. I'm thinking adding more power and one more starter. It must be frustrating for the team and their fans for them to keep making the playoffs and recently not going any further than the ALDS and being swept the past 3 times. I rooted for them this year and I was shocked that they couldn't take one from the Yankees who aren't nearly as good as last year.

Your Fenway Friend...(how about the Red Sox ship someone Daisuke and we sign Cliff Lee? Oh yeah, we almost had Cliff Lee if we sent the Indians Clay Buchholz with Justin Masterson for Victor Martinez. Foolish move Theo.)

Correction: The DS will not be extended next season. It is being considered for 2012, as well as other playoff scenarios such as adding more wild cards (please no!).

Another step toward becoming a niche sport. They figure they can slap "playoffs" on a game and folks will pay top dollar, like the stupid interleague games (Indians-Pirates? I'm there!). Which is fine, as long as they don't care about the plummeting TV ratings.

Does anyone think that they should eliminate the travel/off days? Then the strategy and roster utilization would be more similar to the regular season. On the other hand, the off days let the fans see more of the very best players.

The Twins happen to have lost a bunch of playoff games in a row, but it's silly to think that they'll never win a series in the near future. They probably need more front-line pitching, but that's their only real weakness.

That could a hardship for teams playing in a cross-country series such as San Fran/Philly. The games run late, then they'd have to catch a late flight and then play a few hours later. It's especially more difficult if you're travelling east, as you lose hours in the process. Teams generally have off days in-season when travelling great distances.

There may be supporters of shortening the season, but I suspect it'd be more likely that Spring Training would be shortened. The training aspect would be shortened, however, because Spring Training games are also popular with fans.

I'm hearing it was true.

It never happened, according to the famous "unnamed source."

Teams can't in reality trade players for managers, but they can trade players of differing values in consideration of letting their manager out of their contract to go manage another club. The Devil Rays, for example, traded starting outfielder Randy Winn to Seattle for minor league infielder Antonio Perez, a marginal prospect, in part to compensate the Mariners for letting Lou Piniella leave Seattle for Tampa.
