Least Favorite Song per Album

Recommended Posts

I think this might be the more interesting list. I tried to list comments on some of the choices. Otherwise, it just came down to choosing a song that, if I had to, I could live without.

A.M.: Should've Been in Love

Being There: The Lonely 1

Summerteeth: When You Wake Up Feeling Old

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot: Heavy Metal Drummer - this was an impossible choice

A Ghost is Born: Less Than You Think - this was also impossible

Sky Blue Sky: What Light & Leave Me (Like You Found Me) - this may be cheating, but these two songs are my two least favorite of the entire catalog, so I felt like I should include them both

Wilco (the album): Bull Black Nova - an early favorite that I quickly turned on; i can't even listen to it anymore

The Whole Love: Open Mind - a few to choose from here, but this song epitomizes what's gone wrong with late-era Wilco

I've got it like this:

AM                       - I Thought I Held You

Being There        - the Lonely 1

Summer Teeth     - We're just Friends

Yankee                - Heavy Metal Drummer (I wish this was a first set closer, it'd be perfect for a quick piss break)

AGIB                    - Less than you Think

SBS                     - Leave me Like you Found Me

WTA                    - Deeper Down (my nom for worst song in the catalogue)

Whole Love         - One Sunday Boring (mostly because it eats up the space of two other better songs in concert)

I'll agree with the uneasy feelings about late-era Wilco. I hope the Tweedy band gets all of that out of Jeff's system so that Wilco can get back on track.

AM                       - I Thought I Held You

Being There        - Was I in Your Dreams (ridiculously difficult)

Summer Teeth     - We're just Friends

Yankee                - Radio Cure

AGIB                    - Wishful Thinking

SBS                     - Leave me Like you Found Me

WTA                    - Country Disappeared

Whole Love         - Open Mind

I'm guessing there is more consensus on these than the favorite track thread!

Can't believe there were 4 posts w/o Everlasting Everything.

I'll help you out with that:

AM - Dash 7

BT - Why Would You Wanna Live

ST - We're Just Friends

YHF - Radio Cure

AGIB - I'm A Wheel

SBS - On and On and On

WTA - Everlasting Everything

TWL - Sunloathe

AM - It's Just That Simple (sorry John...)

BT - Dreamer in my Dreams

ST - ELT (far and away my least favorite song from the first three albums)

YHF - Reservations (not bad at all, it's just that I like everything else on the album more)

ABIG - Less Than You Think (I appreciate it on a conceptual level, but rough sledding as a listening experience)

SBS - Walken (so many other contenders...)

WTA - I'll Fight (ibid)

TWL - Capitol City (winner for my least favorite Wilco song, so far...)

AM - Blue Eyed Soul

BT - Kingpin

ST - We're Just Friends (like the lyrics and vocal, but musically is a letdown on an otherwise epic pop/rock record)

YHF - I'm The Man Who Loves You (tough call, but my least favorite of the good-to-great tunes)

AGIB - Theologians (redeems itself live. Too subdued on studio version)

SBS - Walken (maybe the only Wilco song I despise)

WTA - Sonny Feeling

TWL - Capitol City

Actually I have grown to absolutely LOVE Less Than You Think. I don't always listen to the whole thing, but I usually do. The lyrics give me the chills just thinking about them "A fist so clear and climbing / punches a hole/ in the sky. . . " There's something about that line that just causes my heart to leap into my throat. Seriously.

i don't mind the song (then again, I have a bunch of O'Rourke records) but it's a pretty clear outlier on that album.

There isn't a single mediocre song on YHF or AGIB. They're all great. But I agree with this about Less Than You Think being the clear outlier.

Wilco Me, I came here to see your list.  Since you are usually a fount of Wilco positivity, I thought your particular list would be particularly intriguing.  Alas, no list from you.  Come on, now--you can't use a thread about disfavor to offer only raves.  Give us your list!  :P

AM: It's Just That Simple

BT: Why Would You Wanna Live

ST: My Darling

YHF: Reservations (although I still love it)

AGIB: Wishful Thinking

SBS: Leave Me (Like You Found Me)

WTA: Solitaire

TWL: Sunloathe

I didn't put too much thought into this, but while reviewing the tracklists, I was struck by how this was a tough exercise for albums 1-5, and equally tough for albums 6-8--but for the opposite reason.  If there are any Wilco songs that routinely compel me to locate the skip button, they are all post-AGIB.

Another observation: The crossover between these two threads speaks to Wilco's enduring, varied, highly personal output.  For example, I absolutely love "Dash 7" and "We're Just Friends," two tracks that are often cited as bottom-tier by other fans, and there's plenty listed in the other thread that I considered for my "least" list, such as "You Never Know" and "Say You Miss Me."  Whenever I see someone list "Sunloathe" as a favorite, my mind boggles, and then I realize that mostly I'm just glad someone somewhere finds it resonant.
