remphish1
How do you listen? Ipod, Vinyl, Cds, Radio, Pandora, other?? I commute about an hour and a half roundtrip. In the Car I listen to my ipod on random. At work for maybe 6 of the 8 hours here I also listen to my ipod on a dock at random. Sometimes when I am cooking I will throw on Pandora At home I will play vinyl on the weekends. You?
PopTodd
I listen all-day at work:At my deskOn headphonesAll on mp3, unfortunately. But, that is the most-convenient way, as my new computer does not has a CD drive, and the external one is a pain in the ass. Also, I listen in the car… also on mp3, on my iPod.Again, for convenience. Plus, I like the "shuffle" function in the car.
Chez
I have an hour commute (train and walk) each way each day. I listen on my iPod (160GB). When I'm home, I listen to CD's on my stereo. If I'm driving, I usually listen to Sirius XM Radio.
LouieB
I listen to the radio on the car and sometimes CDs. LouieB
tinnitus photography
in the car, it's a mix of my 160GB iPod on shuffle, or sometimes SiriusXM (just renewed after my sub lapsed and they sent me a great deal). at home, it's one of three options:1 - listen to mp3s via headphones on my computer, usually when working on photos2 - listen to to LPs or now CDs (finally replaced my dead CD player) on the big boy stereo3 - listen to streamed mp3s over my home entertainment system, which has speakers in the kitchen/tv room/outside deck
Lammycat
No tunes in vehicle for commute to work, listen to sports radio.Listen to gdradio.net at work on Promethean Board before work and during planning and lunch.Home- cd/tape player or cell phone/speaker hook up for back porch with Pandora/Spotify/Discs, cd/tape player/iPod hook up inside. Stereo system shit the bed years ago.
John Smith
In my car it's a mix of cd's iPod and occasional sports talk radio. It all depends on the mood of the moment. At work I ised to bring in a different mix of cd's each day and listen on low volume. CD player recently broke so I'm going off my iPod (80gb) right now. So I'm Pretty much limited to what's on there. Occasionally I'll do Pandora.
Hixter
In my car, I have two 32GB thumb drives filled with MP3s that I typically play randomly. I just bought the car a week ago so it has 3 free months of SiriusXM, but I rarely listen to it. I like the DJs and variety of material, but the poor sound quality just turns me off. At home, I use iTunes on a Mac Mini connected to my home theater system to play my music collection and listen to Apple's new streaming music service. On the weekend I listen to music in/on my neighbors' pools or decks. I downloaded the Billboard Top 100 for every year from 1955 to 2013 and slapped the songs on their computers and we listen to them on outdoor speakers via iTunes that is remotely controlled with an iPhone. Everyone just grabs the phone and adds a few songs of their choice to the playlist. I can't find any earbuds that will stay in place in my ears, so I don't listen to any music while on the go. I suppose I should buy some over the ear headphones.
KevinG
I have become a big fan of Google Play and their curated radio stations. After I drop my daughter off at school I plug into that via my phone and then when I am work I use my bluetooth speaker that is velcroed to the wall. I work from home so I can do stuff like that. calvino
Work --- Archive.org (Grateful Dead) or Spotify through very shitty computer speaker. Car --- Radio/XM/Cd's --- my car has a USB port and I did buy a thumb drive, months ago - but haven't gotten around to dumping any music on it. At home, if in kitchen or outside - My Mac or a Bose SoundLink Speaker III -- my wife got the Bose speaker with "credit card points" of some sort - never would have bought it - but I am glad she got it, because it does sound pretty great for casual listening.Living room - my main system. I a capable of hooking up a hard drive to my OPPO cd/dvd player - which great for playing bootlegs and such.
theashtraysays
Car - an old 64GB iPod which is now CarPod. Lots of saved Spotify offline music and most of my MP3s.Home - home theater/stereo with speakers in kitchen / living room, and the HT setup in the den, usually Spotify (via an older iPhone on a dock). Mr. Heartbreak
My listening habits have changed since my 160gb iPod died and I got a different job.Home - iTunes all the wayCar - digging back into my CD collectionWork - ear buds on the computer; finding lots of whole albums and concerts, so I don't have to switch it often; this afternoon will feature a 2-hour NHOP show
Sweet Papa Crimbo
iPod primarily and computer (somewhat rarely) Almost never listen to CDs (unless it's on the computer) and very, very rarely listen to my vinyl (when I do it is a major event..the fils and spouse listening with me)Interestingly, I used to mainly listen to XMMLB and XMPR when I had my truck (which dies a horrible, horrible death saving my life two weeks ago)
Plumplechook
I ripped all my CDs to FLAC files and have a laptop hooked up to my stereo playing music through an application called JRiver Media Center. It's like iTunes but a lot better. I can control it remotely through an app on my iPhone called JRemote - which also provides the option of streaming music from the laptop to the phone. So that's what I use when I am in the car or at my desk at work - using JRemote to stream music from my home system to my phone. Because it's streaming lossless files the sound quality is great - and it gives me access to my entire music collection wherever I am (including when traveling overseas). Hixter
I've read that Apple plans to increase their song limit for iTunes Match to 100,000 from the current 25,000. I'll be more likely to stream my music from the cloud when that happens.
lost highway
I started wondering how many full albums you guys figure you listen to in a week. I'd guess I range between 10-20. The lower weeks are often thanks to the shuffle setting on my ipod, or my recent podcast addiction.

worldrecordplayer
Love this topic, so interesting to me to see how music fans consume their music. A discussion I frequently have with friends who have switched over to Sonos or other streaming services as their in-home primary means of listening. I am not a fan. Commuting on train-my 180 gig iPod. I don't think I've ever put it on shuffle. 90% of the time I'm listening to live shows, Wilco, GD, Phish, etc. I much prefer live music. For non-live studio releases, I listen to complete albums. I still believe in the form of the complete album. I have maybe 2 or 3 playlists I've made that I'll occasionally put on: a R.E.M. playlist, a playlist made from the complete Treme soundtrack, and a playlist from the Pretenders Pirate Radio box set. Commuting in my car-my same iPod, or some XM Radio (GD channel, JamOn, or some sports radio depending what's on) and occasionally I'll grab some GD discs that I haven't put on my iPod. At work in office or home-iTunes mp3 library or Spotify. My home computer speakers are great, office ones just OK. But I can't really "listen" to music like I like while working. So its on in the background and will put me in a good mood, but I don't consider that really listening. At home- either CD's or vinyl. I upgraded my cd player, turntable, speakers and headphones over the last 2 years. Love how everything sounds at home. I never listen to mp3 or any streaming services, unless on my iPad while sitting outside. But 99% of music I listen to at home is the actual physical media.
tinnitus photography
it's kind of a drag for me to see the mp3 revolution kill stereos...
worldrecordplayer
it's kind of a drag for me to see the mp3 revolution kill stereos... I agree. Latest example: the audio quality of listening to Star Wars when the CD came out was about a million times better than listening to the free mp3 download. It was headspinning when I first put the disc on.
calvino
it's kind of a drag for me to see the mp3 revolution kill stereos... Yeah - i never had a MP3 player and ripping stuff to MP3's doesn't appeal to me much , which is why my thumb drive I bought for my car is still in its package. I do like the evolution of hard drives and stereos, though. It does make things easier when you rip something into .wav or .flac and I definitely take advantage of having a great library system in my area and ripping lots of CD's. NoJ
When working, I don't listen to music. When not working, I use the home stereo system for vinyl and CDs and/or the various iPod player devices we have scattered about the house. I'll also use the radio to listen to the Steve Dahl show if I happen to be in the car on weekday afternoons.
NoJ
I still have giant and awesome speakers in the house too. I hope to never have to get rid of those.
