Halfway thru the year: Best albums of 2019 so far
TCP replied to DiamondClaw's topic in Someone Else's Song
So I really wanted to do a top 5. But that was too hard. So then I wanted to do a top 10, but I ended up with 11 and no one to kick. Long story short, here's my top 15 with 5 honourable mentions: Orville Peck - Pony Big Thief - U.F.O.F. Calexico / Iron & Wine - Years To Burn Jeff Tweedy - WARMER Kevin Morby - Oh My God The National - I Am Easy To Find Mac Demarco - Here Comes The Cowboy Hand Habits - placeholder Andrew Bird - My Finest Work Yet Better Oblivion Community Center - Better Oblivion Community Center Steve Gunn - The Unseen In Between Stephen Malkmus - Groove Denied Strand Of -
How do you even begin replacing someone as talented but also important to the band as Janet Weiss? Also, if Janet doesn't like it, that kills a lot of my hype for the new album.

Sunday ended up being a pretty good day of music for me, despite some questionable weather early on. I too also caught the Buck Meek performance, which was his lone performance at SSF yet was done as a pop up performance in the middle of B4's gallery. His vocals (and guitar?) were pushed out though a lone PA speaker and everything else was just amps and natural acoustics. Couple that with the location and a lot of the audience sitting on the floor, it ended up being a pretty cool and unique experience that you can only really get at a fest like Solid Sound. After that we caught the Autumn Defe

So, I thought the vast majority of the 10 winners did a great job. I counted two instances of coming in early but that wasn't a huge deal. I thought only one performance from the winners (I won't say who) wasn't strong, it sounded like they were struggling with the key. I had been wondering if they shifted keys on any of the songs, I guess not! But ultimately because at least in the area close to the stage, with the lyrics on screen, everyone was singing along so loud it didn't really matter who was singing on stage. It was a fun supportive night and I had a blast. Fun fact: it was my first Wi

Wow, some hot takes in this thread. I for one love internet hot takes and this message board needs them!! But.... Count me down as someone desperately wanting new Wilco music. Star Wars and Schmilco are objectively great albums, if you'd rather hear Heavy Metal Drummer for the 2000th time, that's on you. Obviously Being There - A Ghost Is Born are hard albums to top but you also need to be aware of your own nostalgia for their old albums. I wouldn't read too much into setlists to what is essentially a warm up tour before they start promoting new material in the fall. Or a one off show from the

Wilco — 16 June 2019, Amsterdam, The Netherlands (Paradiso) [Night 2 of 2]

Outside of the 6 members of Wilco, I think the most prominent person I noticed was bbop himself, boping his head along to the songs in the crowd! I tried to see theashtraysays but didn't see him, though I did see his sign during the beginning of Nova. -
It's disappointing that for all the narratives they made up, they still included Allen Ginsberg. I mean, you're making stuff up, why not just exclude him entirely?

Wilco — 13 June 2019, Brussels, Belgium (Ancienne Belgique) [Night 2 of 2]

Wait wait, she yelled for Mountain Bed DURING Reservations!? I saw someone on the Facebook group bragging that Jeff played Mountain Bed for them, which sounded like a feel good moment, but not if she interrupted a song. Anyways, great recap bbop as always. It's a great feeling to have Wilco shows to be recapped. -
I'm not a Blues fan, but I'm happy for them and their fanbase, it's a feel good story. I'm also happy that the Bruins lost. Best of all, the Leafs now have sole ownership of the longest Cup drought. That's just good stuff!

Personally I hope this means Wilco XI is a concept album about The Dark Knight. Odes about Nightwing, ballads about Harvey Dent, and a jaunty waltz about Harley Quinn. Honestly they could probably repurpose The Joke Explained as a song about The Joker.

I already have Wam and Warmer LPs but the completionist in me needs that bonus track. Hmm......

Wilco — 5 June 2019, Knoxville, TN (Bijou Theatre) [Night 1 of 2]

I've been predicting an October release for awhile now and I'm well known for my Nostradamus-like Wilco predictions. -
Is anyone in the Neil Young Archives? It's a subscription service but each subscriber gets a unique code for each show, so there's not anywhere near as much competition as a regular pre-sale. Not only that, but most, if not all, of the first few rows are reserved for subscribers. I can't help but feel Wilco, while not the most popular band, has enough hardcore fans they could do something like that and tie it in with a quarterly or annual vinyl release or streaming access to the roadcases or something like that.

I miss Winamp. Anyone remember Winamp?

I can't load the article quoted in the OP, but the first iPhone was released less than three weeks before this thread was made. Think how much of a non-issue filming concerts was back then compared to today. Obviously some phones could shoot video in 2007 and lots of phones could take pictures, but none of that was anywhere near as common place as it is today. I would have agreed with Ben even back in 2007 but we had no idea how bad it was about to get.

The Wilco Facebook page describes it as "The first leg of the fall tour" so hopefully some mid-west dates are coming later.
-
NAILED IT!!! ....No shows anywhere near me. Disappointed. I wasn't expecting a Winnipeg show but I was hoping for Minneapolis. Maybe in 2020...

Well.... next week for sure guys. I'm rarely wrong twice!!

If it's a joint Wilco/Beck tour that gets announced soon, I will look like a genius! I don't know this Albany station, but it's possible if Wilco is playing Albany that the radio station could be involved in promoting it, which would give them inside knowledge. Otherwise I question how much early access to singles a radiostation that isn't KEXP/KCRW/Siriux XMU, would get for Wilco in this day and age. Lots of bands are announcing fall tours this week and dropping singles. Sufjan Stevens and Sleater-Kinney both released singles this morning. So I still feel strong about something happening
