  1. Unbelievable. Mahut just wanted off the court at the end of that and then they had the ceremony. We left the house yesterday to take the kids to the dentist, then to Toy Story 3. Then we went to a restaurant and saw the match was still on TV. Crazy, crazy stuff. There will be books written and movies made to celebrate this match. I thought maybe one of them was going to have a Richie "The Baumer" Tenenbaum-like meltodwn at some point.
  2. VU - Loaded Bob Mould - Workbook Bruce Springsteen - Nebraska Jayhawks - Hollywood Town Hall, Tomorrow the Green Grass Wilco - YHF Then there's jazz Sonny Rollins - Saxophone Colossus Miles Davis - Kind of Blue Charles Mingus - Ah,Um, Mingus Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, Blues & Roots Thelonious Monk - Brilliant Corners John Coltrane - A Love Supreme I suppose there's a lot more jazz CDs I'd list here than rock because jazz is so much more about the performance than the songwriting. A great jazz combo can make a mediocre tune brilliant.
  3. Taibbi's piece on Palin in 2008 was brilliant.
  4. I knew the plot from reading storybooks with the kids at the bookstore, I knew I'd get teary-eyed, but didn't expect to in the landfill. Hope that's not much of a spoiler. Also didn't expect it to be so damn exciting!
  5. He was screwed, but it was a much closer call the the goal taken away from us vs. Slovenia.
  6. Algeria played great defense and their goalkeeper kept them in the game until the very end, but USA, USA, USA!!!!!!!!
  7. True, but lots and lots of filler too.
  8. 1. Purple Rain 2. Sign o' the Times (tough call which of those go first) 3. Around the World in a Day 4. 1999 5. Black Album Only ones that really matter to me, he has other good material, but IMO, no other complete albums.
  9. Wow! I'd flip. He and Rod Carew were my first introduction to the game.
  10. Well done. I like October 1964 a little better, but both are damn good baseball books. RIP to Mr. Halberstam.
  11. Just noticed the Twins scored 5 in the top of the 9th to tie the Phillies. I gave up on that game long ago. Now we're up 13-10 w/ 2 outs in the bottom of the 11th. We needs to play better to create some more separation from the Tigers, they're breathing down our backs.
  12. Two more thoughts: 1) If I had to eliminate rooting for any country whose history included some form of racial discrimination, for whom would I root? 2) Colbert: "Brazil defeats North Korea in the World Cup. I guess we know who they're nuking first!"
  13. Again, I am allowed to root for or against a country based on that country's politics if I choose to, and I do. I do not feel the inclination to justify it to you. I am not sure how you can boldly declare my stance "wrong". You may disagree, and you are entitled, but geez. Like I said, I admired the way the North Koreans played today and I have nothing against them. Hell, I bet there's many of them who would like to leave NK if they could. I want them to lose because of what their government stand for. Take it or leave it.
  14. I have no love for Italy or Argentina, but if I was alive in 1936, I would have rooted against the Germans in favor of Jesse Owens. A country's politics do factor into who I root for. Having said that, NK played great in the first half and seemed to gain a lot of respect from the Brazilians. If it had continued in the 2nd half, I may have had a Rocky IV moment and ended up rooting for the underdogs just like the Russians rooted for Balboa.
  15. I seriously hope Brazil puts double digits up on North Korea.
  16. Yes, are you suggesting a name swap?
  17. One of my kids' (5 year old twins) favorites. Sometimes we sing rock and roll preschool.
  18. US looks completely amateur out there right now.
  19. Iggy Pop - Metro, 1988 - Stage dove right on top of me. I thought I might die. I didn't.
  20. That SA breakaway in the 90th minute that went off the post was a heartbreaker.
  21. a-man, you didn't watch 24, did you? Some badass Russians in the last season. I think the pretty much laid of the Chinese, though. Mostly focused on Russians, Middle Easterners, white supremacists, and drug lords.
  22. Here's the problem in this conflict. The oppression of the Palestinians is directly connected to a history of violent attacks against the Israeli people. The Palestinians of Gaza elected Hamas who has called for the destruction of Israel. Without the violence, the Israelis no longer have a justification for the oppression and many more of their own citizens -- not withstanding international pressure -- wouldn't stand for it.
  23. LouieB is dead right about non-violent resistance. I had a long discussion about this issue several years ago. He was much less sympathetic to Israel than I am, but we both agreed that Israel could NOT nor would WANT to handle the international pressure that would come upon them if they continued to oppress the Palestinians for, say 3 years, with only non-violence in return. It still wouldn't settle all the tricky land disputes, but it would force Israel into much more serious negotiations.
