Red card which means he was kicked out of this game and automatically suspended for the next. A totally appropriate penalty for a handball in the penalty area.

That's like saying a running back who had a clear shot to the end zone except for the defender who horse collared him ought to be rewarded a touchdown. Granted, NBA has their goal tending rule, but soccer doesn't. The defender acted in a moment of desperation, he's already suffered consequences and will suffer more. Again, his team benefited not from his foul but from Ghana's inability to score the PK.
-
They were rewarded by the dismal PK attempt by the Ghana player. PKs are usually an extraordinary opportunity for a team to score an easy goal in a sport in which scores are usually few and far between. BTW, I hope the Dutch win too.
-
I think any non-soccer fan who watched the end of that Uruguay v. Ghana game would be converted, except that it had to be settled by PKs.

It doesn't bother me, but I can understand not liking it a helluva lot more than not liking Good Day Sunshine. The horns on that just kill me.

That song is brilliant. The album is as flawless as an album gets. Here, There and Anywhere I can understand, but Good Day Sunshine? Shocked!

Excellent selections

My wife just reminded me of this. I can never forgive him for his role in helping the Saints win the NFC championship game. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HDs3U9IeYg0&feature=related

I was thinking he had a heart attack. Funny that the guy retired twice very publicly (albeit, once as Ziggy) and now seems to have retired for real without any hoopla. The man did some great stuff, he was really my gateway into a world of strange music. Whatever he's doing I hope he's enjoying life (slightly) removed from the public view.

My kids have almost outgrown the Wiggles, not quite yet. I just showed them your picture and they were quite happy.

Unbelievable. Mahut just wanted off the court at the end of that and then they had the ceremony. We left the house yesterday to take the kids to the dentist, then to Toy Story 3. Then we went to a restaurant and saw the match was still on TV. Crazy, crazy stuff. There will be books written and movies made to celebrate this match. I thought maybe one of them was going to have a Richie "The Baumer" Tenenbaum-like meltodwn at some point.

VU - Loaded Bob Mould - Workbook Bruce Springsteen - Nebraska Jayhawks - Hollywood Town Hall, Tomorrow the Green Grass Wilco - YHF Then there's jazz Sonny Rollins - Saxophone Colossus Miles Davis - Kind of Blue Charles Mingus - Ah,Um, Mingus Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, Blues & Roots Thelonious Monk - Brilliant Corners John Coltrane - A Love Supreme I suppose there's a lot more jazz CDs I'd list here than rock because jazz is so much more about the performance than the songwriting. A great jazz combo can make a mediocre tune brilliant.

Taibbi's piece on Palin in 2008 was brilliant.

I knew the plot from reading storybooks with the kids at the bookstore, I knew I'd get teary-eyed, but didn't expect to in the landfill. Hope that's not much of a spoiler. Also didn't expect it to be so damn exciting!

He was screwed, but it was a much closer call the the goal taken away from us vs. Slovenia.
-
Algeria played great defense and their goalkeeper kept them in the game until the very end, but USA, USA, USA!!!!!!!!
-
True, but lots and lots of filler too.

1. Purple Rain 2. Sign o' the Times (tough call which of those go first) 3. Around the World in a Day 4. 1999 5. Black Album Only ones that really matter to me, he has other good material, but IMO, no other complete albums.

Wow! I'd flip. He and Rod Carew were my first introduction to the game.

Well done. I like October 1964 a little better, but both are damn good baseball books. RIP to Mr. Halberstam.

Just noticed the Twins scored 5 in the top of the 9th to tie the Phillies. I gave up on that game long ago. Now we're up 13-10 w/ 2 outs in the bottom of the 11th. We needs to play better to create some more separation from the Tigers, they're breathing down our backs.
