  1. Banks is usually good for a nice, light, cheerful beach read.
  2. Couldn't agree more, except for Before Sunrise and Before Sunset. Absolutely love those movies. If you watch Parenthood, the teacher character is an annoying Ethan Hawke wannabe.
  3. The Twinkies are off to a good start on the road. A good thing as Target Field probably won't provide the home field advantage that the dome did.
  4. I've got to promote a guy who went to my high school. This is his 3rd novel (following What's Eating Gilbert Grape, and An Ocean in Iowa - both excellent). He also directed Pieces of April and Dan in Real Life. I'm about 1/2 way through and it is very good. Thematically he's a lot like Tom Perrotta and this story seems to have elements of Election and Little Children.
  5. Capturing the Friedmans is one of the most captivating movies I've ever seen. Still can't make sense of it.
  6. My Flying Saucer (does this count?) at a bar tonight.
  7. That is crazy, but how many districts would've pushed to move lots of kids into spec. ed. just to keep them out of NCLB standards?
  8. It's the best we could do, we're getting dumber.
  9. I am very sad today. Maybe even more sad than when I learned about Jay.
  10. The soundtrack is definitely aimed at a certain demographic that I am square in the middle of. I guess Wilco is dad rock.
  11. Poon, is it a score of 44% or the 44th percentile? In Iowa, we use the good ole ITBS to determine proficiency. Students have to be above the 44th percentile based upon students who took the test in 2001. While statistically feasible, it's basically impossible because the test is designed to create a bell curve. Other states use more criterion-based tests and that's more reasonable. In general, I was and am against NCLB because I think local control is, in general, better. I think it's hilarious that my fellow conservatives rail against our socialist president, but he's the one who's tal
  12. I think that's the same disorder a colleague's daughter has. She was diagnosed with this over a year ago and just had another surgery to try to "unparalyze her face" (as best I understand it). They've met several people who've made a full recovery from this, but it ain't short and it ain't easy.
  13. Starts too early now. It'll be really dark in the AM for a while.
  14. Saw Mark Knopfler playing with Chet Atkins on PBS last night. Pure joy. I don't listen to DS much, but when I do, I'm glad I did.
  15. Love the way they do it live. Cured my hangover the first time I heard it live.
  16. I thought the opening sequence was, in and of itself, Oscar-worthy. Not a wasted word in that scene, or the whole movie, IMO.
  17. To each their own, but I don't understand how anyone can like W(TA) better than SBS. There are some great songs on W(TA), but SBS just sounds more like a complete album.
  18. This is a movie that gets better with repeated viewings. It is much more than it seems the first time. It's too bad that John Hughes flicks are all that are ever talked of with 80s movies. This one is required viewing.
  19. The first accusation seemed suspect. I know no details on this one. The fact that exists is troubling. I wanted to like the guy and will reserve judgment. On a lighter note, I really don't like the idea of the Vikings having to face Peppers twice a season the way he treated McKinney this year.
  20. I really enjoyed this movie but was distracted a bit too much by Sean Penn's horrible pretend guitar playing.
