Maybe the Whitney version. But if you ever heard the original (Dolly) version, you would know just how great that song really is. Suckiest song? I pretty much agree with whoever said "We Built This City". Although "Killroy Was Here" by Styx is right up there, too.

Another year, another brilliant record. Here's the (4-star) AllMusic review: I suggest a listen.

Drivin n' Cryin'/Kevn Kinney I saw them opening for Living Colour when I was in college and they were pretty great. Only recently, I started listening to Kevn Kinney's first solo album again and was really digging it. So I went back to the DnC stuff and was not as impressed with it as I was back in the day. Still, the Kinney stuff alone is worth mentioning ... good stuff.

How could I have forgotten that Nilsson song? That's one of my all-time favorites! Oh, and for the record: Tonio K. - "H.A.T.R.E.D." Now I know it's not unusual There's nothin' so unique There's probably hundreds of wonderful love affairs That go bad in this town every week (It's a big town) But all of them others Them sad-hearted lovers Could cry in their beer what the hey It didn't concern me Was none of my business I never had nothin' to say But suddenly darlin' The table has turned You have left me for somebody new And now it's hard To express the resentment I feel For

Just about anything by Tonio K. Particularly: "H.A.T.R.E.D." "Why Can't I See You In My Mirror?" Also Sixto Rodriguez - "Only Good For Conversation"

A friend of mine just brought this in for me to hear. Hard to believe that it's an '08 release... it sounds straight out of 60's Motown... Smokey Robinson style. Seriously retro and seriously great. Almost too retro for its own good, if the songs weren't so damn good. (Think Amy Winehouse or James Hunter.) Just made my list of things to buy. Soon! And it might become one of those albums that you're kicking yourself for not hearing before the year ended. It certainly will make my Top 5 of the year.

If anyone is bored in Chicago this Friday
PopTodd replied to MrRain422's topic in Someone Else's Song
I would love to come and see you this week. I doubt that I'll be able to make it, but maybe we could play together sometime? I do the solo/acoustic thing, too. Do you have a link to your music anywhere (that's not MySpace, which is blocked for me)? -
I must be the only poor, dumb schlub at work today

At work here. -
Okay. So, I just picked that up. I'll update when it arrives in the mail. And, it does NOT have "Ju Ju Man" on it (damnit).

Wow. Good question. There've been a few. Most recently, probably: Def Leppard. Not only their old catalog (at least through Pyromania), but they also released a killer record in '06 of all covers that prompted the rediscovery. They ain't nothin' brilliant, just a great straight-up rock band. At least when they want to be.

The Best of Arlo Guthrie got a spin recently. So great.

I Miss the Lounge Ax Yeah, I started it, but only because nobody else did. I'm surprised at that. Anyway... if you have pics and videos and memories to post about, I thought it would be a cool place to have for those of us old enough who knew, loved, and miss, Julia's and Sue's place. I know that I do. And I know that I'm not the only one. (Sue: I know that you read and occasionally post here. So, if you see this: thank you for all those years of great shows. Y'all are missed. A lot. Happy Holidays.)

Peter Laughner - Take the Guitar Player For a Ride
PopTodd replied to PopTodd's topic in Someone Else's Song
GOT IT! Thanks so much! (And it wasn't a lo-fi kinda popping, it was a screwed-up disc kinda popping. But that's all good now!) -
I have a copy of that Peter Laughner album, am listening now, and have found that, on the last half of the album, the sound starts to break up -- becomes a lot of static, as if maybe it's being played through blown speakers. It's not a good sound. I have played it on several systems, tried ripping it to mp3, and it still has the same problem. I really want to own a GOOD copy of this amazing disc. Can anyone help me? I've only seen it available used at Amazon and other sites for $40 to $150 a copy; I can't do that.

"Dancing Queen"?!?!

Matt Caterer works at a record store in Chicago and I met him there last year. He told me then that they were working on a new record; glad to hear that it's a good one. He was a pretty nice guy and I like the band.

I was born in 1970, so for me it would look something like: Up Up and Away - The 5th Dimension Rocky Mountain High - John Denver Fly Like an Eagle - Steve Miller The Gambler - Kenny Rogers Feels So Good - Chuck Mangione Mandy - Barry Manilow Star Wars Theme - John Williams Stayin' Alive - The Bee Gees To Much Time On My Hands - Styx Games People Play - The Alan Parsons Project Quickly followed in about 1980, or so with: Rock and Roll High School - The Ramones which helped to turn it all around for me!
-
Thanks for listening, Moss. And thanks for your comments. And yeah, that is true. Hard to see yourself as others see you, but I guess that I would agree with you were I not me. Sorry about that.
