  1. Funny you mention that because the basis of today's ruling was a 1948 ruling saying it was unconstitutional to ban mixed marriages in CA. off to the SCOTUS!
  2. I think we're just going to have to agree to disagree here... but simply put, nothing is unassailable. I agree that's certainly what they were going for & what they got... doesn't mean we all enjoyed it. But if it's meant to be a specacular stage act then drop the phony singing and just have them all dance. Another musical disgrace (in my opinion) that happened last night http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GeiOdHsW_8 commercial starts, "oh, how cool they're playing The Cult" -- then the rap song takes over. why, oh why must they ruin the classics like this? the only good thing abou
  3. (and based on my twitter/fb feed over the past 18 hrs, it ain't just me.) Again, what annoys me most is that she was just dancing to her CD. Yes, it was a well-produced and elaborate spectacle with many visually interesting elements -- but that's about all I can say "nice" about it. Madonna's "performance" amounted to little more than being a prop for a stage show featuring her music.
  4. Black Eyed Peas, Slash & Fergie, Usher & will.i.am http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Super_Bowl_halftime_shows
  5. I don't care who it is, just please get someone who will actually sing the damn songs for a change. This lip-synching crap is so obnoxious and insulting. On the positive side, at least I didn't feel like I missed out on anything special being stuck in the kitchen during halftime -- putting the finishing touches on my SB chili.
  6. political discussion on non-political places such as VC are as close as we can get to authentic discussion & debate on the internet these days. everywhere that specializes in political talk (politico, huffpost, etc.) is full of hyper-partisan robots where everyone is shouting at each other & very few people offer reasoned, thoughful comments. I wasn't around here in '04, but this place is nothing like it was 4 yrs ago -- for the worse, imo. yeah, things got heated at times, but for the most part I thought the discussion was reasonable.
  7. I'm no guitar geek by any means, but that was so interesting to watch.
  8. I thought "Nein" might have been a hint, but looking at various German album covers I'm drawing blanks on palm trees backed by dark blue skies (in addition to realizing how many shitty German bands there are)...
  9. I think I saw that kid in the back on Intervention last week.
  10. I think Ian Curtis just killed himself again.
  11. "all proceeds received from the sale of this work will go directly to the Occupy movement..."
  12. Sounds like it was a good performance from the band, but I've gotta say the comments about the ambience of the crowd/theater is making me nervous about Friday's show @ the LA Theater.
  13. Nice. I was also moved -- from far right, row D to dead freaking center, row C (!!!) The show supposedly sold out; I wonder what the deal is with all these moves. Not complaining, that's for sure... so stoked -- seated or not, I think I'll have a good time!
  14. damn... March is shaping up to be a great month! Justin Townes Earle Lucero who else?
  15. Got a "TICKETMASTER ALERT: SEAT RELOCATION" email this afternoon re: the 1/27 show at the LA Theater. Yes, I was ready to be pissed off. My original seats (which I was happy with) were Orchestra level, but "far house right" (603) row D. My new seats: Orchestra level still, now dead-center (406), row C. http://www.ticketmas...art/74548/41314 woo-hoo!
  16. meh... then again, I never cared much for VH, so what do I know?
  17. Never heard of them before, but they sound pretty good based on a few tracks on YT... http ://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzf103CF0Lw
  18. Awesome. Probably not enough to get me to go to that festival, but hopefully they'll have a few warmup shows in advance down here that I can make it to.
  19. We have fish as our "pets." In reality, they're little more than room decorations that you need to feed regularily (not a big deal) and clean their tank regularily (huge PITA). The kids (6 & 8 now) have about as much interest in the fish as they have in the flowers growing in the back yard. Seriously, unless you have some deep, emotional attachment to fish -- or really like their visual/decorative appeal -- do not get your kids a fish tank. WAY too much work for what tiny amount of pleasure they bring. I'm working on getting a dog as our real pet. Wife is opposed right now, but I ha
  20. Interesting. So it's just an interview on stage, or do his musical guests also sing?
  21. As someone who works from home and is 100% dependent on internet service to accomplish my work, I can understand your frustration. I was very concerned about going through a similar disruption a couple yrs ago when I switched over from my cable co's internet service to Verizon FiOS. Luckily, the installation was perfectly smooth and my actual downtime was maybe 15 mins (of course, the tech was here for a few hrs prior to that). If you can handle living on DSL for a while, I'd suggest calling AT&T, cancelling the order & register a complaint accounting for the real business cost tha
