  1. Saw St Vincent last night. Despite it being a little mawkish and predictable, I really liked it.
  2. So now you know I'm not a 55 year old former major league baseball player from Mississippi ...
  3. I haven't started reading it yet but just got back from a reading by Richard Ford from his new book of Frank Bascombe stories.
  4. Ha! I know Brad and chatted with him before the show. I just saw your conversation on FB and came here to post it. (I don't know Jon personally but I certainly know who he is.)
  5. No - that's definitely missing a bunch of songs - including Tanya Donelly's initial appearance. I'd have to think about what else is missing. It was a fairly long show. He started a little after 7:00 and his main set finished about 8:40. With encores we walked out of the venue about 9:00.
  6. It was a great, fun show. Hitchcock came out and just started playing and he did everything from Soft Boys (Only the Stones Remain) to Egyptians (My Wife and My Dead Wife) to stuff from his new record. Very quiet and respectful audience. He had his usual banter - his first words were "Hello, I'm British." He explained that having us watch him tune his guitar was an important part of the show because it showed how six independent strings could be made to sound good together as a group. Tanya came out and played his favorite song of hers (Untogether) and her favorite song of his (which I
  7. That's how I remember it too. I have the artist listed as "Brian, Jeff, and MIke."
  8. 39 years ago today: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgI8bta-7aw
  9. The first batch of tapes I got included the Binghamton show and it is great. I've probably listened to that Fire on the Mountain more than any other.
  10. I work in Cambridge ("Our Fair City") and I used to see both of them regularly in Harvard Square. They would sit outside this coffee place with their friends and it sounded just like their show. You could hear them laughing from half a block away. I also used to live a few houses away from Tom. There were often interesting cars in is driveway. Once his dog got out of his house, ran into my building, in to my apartment, and onto my bed (while I was still in it). A couple of years ago I was standing next to him at the coffee place and told him that story. I know that getting him to laug
  11. So poking around a bit reveals: Rawley Eastwick (1975 Reds) is the only other pitcher two get two wins and a save in the same World Series (but he was a reliever).13 pitchers have won three games in a World Series
  12. Pretty amazing performance by Bumgarner. I wonder if any other starting pitcher has ever gotten two wins and a save in the World Series. I know Bob Gibson pitched three complete games and got three wins in the 1967 World Series.
  13. Luna playing some dates in Spain next April and hinting at some US dates in "fun places." http://www.rollingstone.com/music/features/inside-lunas-surprise-reunion-with-dean-wareham-20141029
  14. Me too - including the possibly. I've been out of town for a while so I suspect I'll stay home with the family instead of going but it's been a while since I've seen the Pups.
  15. And now it's time for the 25th anniversary of Doolittle: Celebrating 25 years of the band's biggest selling album, Doolittle 25 brings together for the first time all the B-Sides, Peel Sessions and Demos, with almost half the tracks having not been commercially released before. This deluxe CD version contains an impressive 50 tracks with the original album on disc one, 2 full Peel Sessions & 6 B-sides on disc two and the complete album in demo form plus 7 bonus tracks on disc three. Like all other Pixies sleeves before it, Vaughan Oliver returns to reinterpret his original design and Sim
  16. I spent about five days in Hong Kong in the spring of last year. I am a city person so I really enjoyed just wandering around both Kowloon and Wan Chai (on Hong Kong Island). Some of my favorite things - none of which are too far off the beaten path - were: Star Ferry across the Harbor Victoria Peak Hong Kong Museum of History Mong Kok street fair (at night) Stanley Market (south side of Hong Kong Island) Avenue of the Stars (either early in the morning when it is not crowded or at night when they have a light show)
  17. Twin Peaks coming back? http://www.avclub.com/article/showtime-orders-twin-peaks-continuation-2016-210127 I've got pretty mixed feelings about this. I loved the first season and a half, got confused in the second half of season 2, and thought the movie was a bit of a mess. I suppose the positive spin is that Lynch and Frost will write the complete series and Lynch will direct all nine episodes.
  18. Pretty good in-depth piece on Ryan Adams on Buzzfeed: http://www.buzzfeed.com/bobmehr/at-home-kinda-with-ryan-adams#1s28by6
  19. That's actually what got my bro-in-law interested. He was somewhere in Kansas researching another project and he saw these wagon wheel ruts and started following them on foot. That led him to a small museum about the Oregon Trail and he was hooked.
  20. Self-serving comment here but I just started reading an advance copy of a book my brother-in-law wrote – and which will be published next year. He and one of his brothers re-traced the 2,000 mile Oregon Trail from Missouri to Oregon with a covered wagon, three mules, and a Jack Russell Terrier. It took them about four months and was quite an adventure.
  21. Stephin Merritt (Magnetic Fields) reading from his new book and playing some songs.
  22. Hope you made it because it was a great show. He opened with Tiny Cities and went from there. In acknowledgement of Steve Shelley playing drums someone shouted out Teenage Riot. Kozelek sort of smirked, thought about it for a minute and then they played it for about two minutes. And when they stopped he looked at Shelley and told him they they ripped off Joy Division because Teenage Riot was just Love Will Tear Us Apart mixed up.
  23. Don't think I do - I had trouble finding someone to go with me. I'm assuming doors at 7:30 and he comes on at 8:00 (with Steve Shelley being part of his band).
  24. 20 minute drum solo? I dunno ... He plays on the latest SKM album so maybe he plays on those same songs as part of the show?
