saw yes in the round on the tormato tour. such great musicianship and anderson's singing is almost magical at times... a far cry from the meaty rock-n-roll kiss and aerosmith shows i'd seen the previous year... kinda sad i missed out on the yes/asia show that was touring last year. a double dose of steve howe is not a bad thing!

saw mike watt a few weeks ago playing his newest "opera." what a great set. did a few minutemen/firehose songs in the encore. always a gracious man, too. and he's playing something like 51 shows in 52 days on this tour. riding in a van, of course...

i saw leslie west play with bachman-turner overdrive when they opened for van halen in 1986. that was pretty cool. they played mississippi queen and all the other bto hits.

sure would love to see an oklahoma show, since they've never even played here once!

a few years ago when i went to the austin city limits festival, i was walking back to my hotel and there was a great-sounding band playing outdoors at threadgills, and i looked on the marquee and it was james mcmurtry and his band. it was sold out, but i went to a nearby gas station and got a 6-pack and watched/listened from behind the stage. great way to end the night...

saw them open for ll cool j, whodini, and run-dmc in '86 before licensed to ill came out. 3 punky kids on skateboards came riding out and rapped 3 punky-funky songs and we pretty much laughed at them and said they would never go anywhere with that music... the joke was on us, obviously!

I met Michael Stipe and Wayne Coyne last night!

wayne is always seen out and about here in oklahoma city when he's in town and it's pretty cool how people really don't bug him that much. i think because he doesn't stay in hiding and isn't afraid to go to the coffee shop, record store, club shows, etc... he's just like a regular guy around here. now, he does get some geeked-out fan-boy attention, but that's fairly rare. mostly people will just go up and say hello or take a quick pic with him. -
yes! diggin' it... can't wait to see him in a few weeks.

fugazi's been on hiatus for almost 10 years, i think. ian mackaye formed a duo with a girl drummer/singer called the evens, and had a kid with her a few years back. i saw the evens a few years ago and was sitting 2 feet from ian and he'd stare at me while he was singing and it was so intense i was starting to really feel uncomfortable. i talked to him after the show and he said he thought he was freaking me out pretty good.

i'm not too sure what to make of this trade yet, but losing green and kristic doesn't bother me too much. and if he's healthy, perkins will be a big upgrade over kristic. nate robinson really doesn't seem to fit for the thunder, with westbrook and a very capable backup in eric maynor. also, the bobcats traded nazr mohammed to the thunder for dj white and mo peterson. i'm alright with that.
-
and the jazz trade deron williams to the nets for derrick favors and devin harris and draft picks. thank you western conference/northwest division teams for making the thunder's stronghold on the division lead even stronger!

except mine was #7 (for my 7th birthday.) and it got stolen shortly after by the neighborhood thug.

Bands you wish that you had seen, but missed the chance

led zeppelin 77 - cousin was in line to get tickets and it sold out before he got to the box office. black sabbath 78/80 - the folks thought they were a satanic band, despite dad taking me to kiss a year earlier. clash 83 - wichita falls. dad wouldn't let us drive from okc to wichita falls. supertramp 83 - school night. dire straits 85 - i could only go to 1 of the 2 concerts i had a choice of and i chose heart. at least they were better looking than mark knopfler! nirvana 93 - "they'll come back here on another tour." pink floyd 94 - dallas - me and another co-worker decided we were going to -
i like her new cd ok, but her voice seems to have a little bit of what i call "zooey deschanel-flat" sound to it...

and skateboarder! was a huge tony alva fan...
-
ha! yeah, me too... circus, hit parader, creem, mad... the managers at safeway got pretty good at running us off!
-
are you forgetting about tony allen's career-high offense and monster defense against the thunder last week? that was a tough loss for me to handle... i love tony allen. been watching him since he was at oklahoma state - he's got that eddie sutton defensive tenacity ingrained in him.

mat hoffman on the bmx bike was unexpected...

way to go on the national anthem christina aguilera... seriously, get a teleprompter!

went to the thunder/heat game yesterday and that was a great game to watch and almost playoff-like atmosphere. wish the outcome would've been different, but it was a lot of fun watching the back-and-forth of all the big stars making plays.

well, at least there's 1 astro on there. my oklahoma city redhawks were the triple-a farm team of the rangers for 20-some years, and lately we'd gotten used to seeing great prospects come through and move up to the big leagues and become all-stars. now we're the astros' triple-a farm team and it's gonna be an uphill climb for a while. but it's still baseball, right? -
