I highly doubt Wilco would book a show without a gurantee, especially in Europe. I worked as an agent for a few years, so I don't think I'm speculating on this one. For a band like Wilco, the guarantee is standard operating procedure.

I can't see how poor ticket sales would make a reasonable explanation. They are popular enough to have 2 shows booked at one venue in Ireland, and have one of those shows sold out, but in England people have forgotten all about them? It doesn't fit from my perspective. It could be any number of reasons from illness to visa problems, even minor neglect of paperwork. Hopefully we'll find out. C'mon now and think it through...even if it was poor ticket sales, the promoter would be the one cancelling the show and eating the money, Wilco would still get most, if not all, of thier money. Wilco gets a GUARANTEE for thier shows, based on thier contract with the promoter of the show. Promoters usually have to give a 50% deposit to the bands agency 30 days prior to the show. I won tix from Rolling Stone, got the VIP treatment. He does an amazing job with all that reverb, but when listening to thier live album, I noticed he can't really hit the notes. No biggie, though, because that reverb has become an essential part of thier sound.

There is a lot wrong here that I don't have time to go into. For instance, the guitar (or stringed instruments, like the banjo) actually originated in Africa. The english language is about the only thing white about the origins of American blues. "Call and Response", a key part of blues, is also African in origin. I was very dissapointed with music this year. many bands who, for better or worse, represent my generation (Arcade Fire, Spoon, Clap Your Hands..., The Shins etc) and none of them had anything of importance to say about the things going on in the world today (Wilco included).

The bands you mentioned were, for all intensive purposes, just playing music that was once considered "black" or "race" music. Its not like they invented the genre. Race is a huge part of the history of rock and roll. In fact, "rock and roll" was called "race music" and "r&b" until Alan Freed termed it "Rock and Roll" (a black slang for sex) in order to sell the music to white teenagers. The only thing a agree with this on list (besides the Clarkson thing) is OK Computer. I recently spent a lot of time with this record trying my best to enjoy it, but as Blender says, its kind of tuneless. There just aren't a lot songs on the record that stick with me, although I do love "No Surprises". As far as the Stones thing goes, yes the albums that preceded Exile were all great, there is just something about the production (or lack thereof) that makes Exile special and timeless.

I agree with this too, but I'm willing to give Earle a pass here because he was probably asked to do it for The Wire, which he will be in quite a bit in the next season.

Louie B, this is the first time I think I have disagreed with you. Oh well... My favorite Earle record is El Corazon or train 'A Comin, but this new one just doesn't stick with me. And if you ever get a chance to read his biography, do it. He IS Behind The Music!
