  1. I am completely shocked that it was discovered that the white trash redneck with the mullet is a racist.
  2. The book was great. as was the Dick Rude movie "lets Rock Again". Looking forward to this doc.
  3. I highly doubt Wilco would book a show without a gurantee, especially in Europe. I worked as an agent for a few years, so I don't think I'm speculating on this one. For a band like Wilco, the guarantee is standard operating procedure.
  4. I've got two shows this weekend, if anybody in NYC or MJ isd looking for something to do: Friday night, October 26th @ 11 PM Mike June & The Dirty Doves The Cutting Room 19 w. 24th St. NYC, NY www.thecuttingroomnyc.com Full band (gtrs., bass. drums, keys, violin) Sunday, October 28th @ 6 PM Mike June (solo) Twisted Covers: The solo songs of The Beatles @ The twisted Tree Cafe Cookman Ave. Asbury Park, NJ Many artist will be covering the solo works of The Beatles. I'll be doing "God" (Lennon) and as the only person who would stand up for the man, I'll be ding Ringo's "Photograph"
  5. I can't see how poor ticket sales would make a reasonable explanation. They are popular enough to have 2 shows booked at one venue in Ireland, and have one of those shows sold out, but in England people have forgotten all about them? It doesn't fit from my perspective. It could be any number of reasons from illness to visa problems, even minor neglect of paperwork. Hopefully we'll find out. I think people deserve an explanation of the differing statements made by promoter and band, because in some cases the tickets are only part of the commitment. I'm sure some people have plane tickets, tra
  6. it is not poor tickets sales. C'mon now and think it through...even if it was poor ticket sales, the promoter would be the one cancelling the show and eating the money, Wilco would still get most, if not all, of thier money. Wilco gets a GUARANTEE for thier shows, based on thier contract with the promoter of the show. Promoters usually have to give a 50% deposit to the bands agency 30 days prior to the show. Tickets DO NOT go onsale and shows are not offfically announced until no less than 3 copies of the contract are signed by both the promoter and the bands booking agency. So if its poor tic
  7. Whover said that was Woody's intent? And if you have actually ever listened to his lyrics, you would find that many of them are not, in fact, intended to make you feel proud of yourself. "This Land is Your Land" was written as an angry response to Irving Berlin's "God Bless America", not to have 3rd grade classes sing in assemblys across the country. And as far as 'batshit enraged", Tom Morello was trying to get a crowd fired up and he did a great job of doing it. The verses to that song do exist. And they do question the direction of America during the great depression, and I'm sure that they
  8. I've jammed with Dave Driewitz (bass) many times over the past year. He's got a little side band called Cresent Moon, just him and a drummer. Its pretty far out. He's a good guy.
  9. Eventhough my band is an original band (or lack therof...) we usually close our show with a cover. We have done a wide range of tunes: Whats So Funny Bout (Peace, Love...) Waiting for the Man (VU) Big River (Cash) Folsom Long As I Can See The Light (CCR) Dead Flowers (Stones) Rocks Off (" ") Friend of the Devil (The Dead) Good Hearted Woman (Willie and Waylon) Highway to Hell (AC/DC) Summer Days (Dylan) Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You (Dylan) Like A Rolling Stone (Dylan) Mess Around (Ray Charles) Heart of Saturday Night (Waits) Man In Me (Dylan) Ooh La La (Faces) Oh Sweet Nuthin (VU)
  10. I agree with most so far... Marah-Kids in Philly -IMO, one of the more interesting rock records in the past few years
  11. Jersey is cover-band central! From time to time I do sit in with Garcia Later, a bunch of friends who play Dead songs, and a few of them are actually in my band. Since you are a shore native, I am proud to tell you I was just nominated for 2 (and perhaps a third one coming) Asbury Music Awards!
  12. It is sad to see Joe go, but I think it was time for a change. Eventhough this past year may have been his finest in pinstripes, Torre has made some bad coaching blunders in the past few years, especially in the playoffs: 1) Bringing the infield in for Luis Gonzalez with the bases jammed and one out in the '01 WS. He should have bought the corners in, but kept the middle infield back for the DP, especially the way Rivera pitches. 2)Bringing in Jeff Weaver to pitch in a tie game against the Marlins in '03. he promptly gave up a gopher ball, as he did all season long. 3) Not attempting to bu
  13. I meant the world at-large. Not the little world that Jeff Tweedy lives in. If you can relate to that, thats fine, but for a guy that was railing against George W. Bush and The Republican Party at every show on the AGIB tour, I was hoping for something more. Something bolder, perhaps.
  14. I won tix from Rolling Stone, got the VIP treatment. Unfortunately the VIP treatment included hanging around a bunch of souless corporate execs who wouldn't shut the fuck up, so we moved downstairs, but not before rubbing elbows with Stone Gossard, Tom Morello and Susan Sarandon... The music: Tim Robbins Kids' band- missed them but someone told me "they werent bad for 16 year olds" Tim Robbins and Band- misssed them too. Was at MSG trying to score Bruce tix. Bob Roberts anyone? Brad (featuring Stone Gossard of Peral Jam)- only got to see three songs, but they were ok. It was mellow, soul
  15. He does an amazing job with all that reverb, but when listening to thier live album, I noticed he can't really hit the notes. No biggie, though, because that reverb has become an essential part of thier sound.
  16. There is a lot wrong here that I don't have time to go into. For instance, the guitar (or stringed instruments, like the banjo) actually originated in Africa. The english language is about the only thing white about the origins of American blues. "Call and Response", a key part of blues, is also African in origin. I was very dissapointed with music this year. many bands who, for better or worse, represent my generation (Arcade Fire, Spoon, Clap Your Hands..., The Shins etc) and none of them had anything of importance to say about the things going on in the world today (Wilco included).
  17. The bands you mentioned were, for all intensive purposes, just playing music that was once considered "black" or "race" music. Its not like they invented the genre. Race is a huge part of the history of rock and roll. In fact, "rock and roll" was called "race music" and "r&b" until Alan Freed termed it "Rock and Roll" (a black slang for sex) in order to sell the music to white teenagers. Ruth Brown said it best: "I thought what I was doing all those years was R&B and the Elvis came along and all of a sudden I'm siniging Rock and Roll." Your point is correct, American music does owe
  18. This poster reads: A Tribute to Woody Guthrie feat. Billy Bragg, Steve Earle and Brad (feat. Pearl Jam's Stone Gossard) Hosted by Tim Robbins and Special Guests Does anybody know who else is playing? I won tickets from Rolling Stone.com and was curious.
  19. Pretty cool. Has anybody ever noticed that "Keep Your Car Running" has the same chord changes and melody as "On the Dark Side" by John Cafferty and The Beaver Brown Band, everyone's favorite B Street Band?
  20. The only thing a agree with this on list (besides the Clarkson thing) is OK Computer. I recently spent a lot of time with this record trying my best to enjoy it, but as Blender says, its kind of tuneless. There just aren't a lot songs on the record that stick with me, although I do love "No Surprises". As far as the Stones thing goes, yes the albums that preceded Exile were all great, there is just something about the production (or lack thereof) that makes Exile special and timeless.
  21. I agree with this too, but I'm willing to give Earle a pass here because he was probably asked to do it for The Wire, which he will be in quite a bit in the next season.
  22. Louie B, this is the first time I think I have disagreed with you. Oh well... My favorite Earle record is El Corazon or train 'A Comin, but this new one just doesn't stick with me. And if you ever get a chance to read his biography, do it. He IS Behind The Music!
