Since I've been home all weekend, I've been taking a deep dive into what's online about FZ & co. Had never noticed before, but the official FZ website has a bunch of podcasts dating as far back as 2013. I see in this thread that around that time, I mentioned that the '74 tours haven't been well-documented; ironically, some of these podcasts address that, as #10 begins a series that discusses One Size Fits All and other stuff from around that time. Cool! I’ve seen a few Zappa Plays Zappa shows, and they were all good. God bless the Zappas. Been home with a sinus infection and skipping around YouTube I came across the Valley Girl video. That sent me down a rabbit hole of interviews with FZ’s kids. I discovered that Dweezil and Moon played siblings in a sitcom with Max Gail and Cindy Williams as their parents. And yes, I watched all the available episodes. Fooking surreal.

Another vote for Via Chicago. When I first heard that, it was 1999 and I was hearing all these JT songs for the first time from the previous year's Lounge Ax solo residency, so I could really hear the words. He went from an interesting songwriter in my estimation to an important songwriter.

I felt like I was being a "Debbie Downer" for my earlier comments "Dave Downer?"), but they were sincere. Unfortunately, Phil hasn't been as good as Bobby since...well, ever! Good point. Back in the day, when Jerry declined so badly, Bobby's singing kinda made up for that. And Jerry's playing kinda made up for the cheese factor Bobby sometimes brought. I'd be able to handle it better if Weir's vocals were gravelly and harsh, but he sounds - and looks - frail. Old age can be very unkind in this business.

Here's what I wrote about Bobby not even five years ago, when he opened the AmericanaramA tour: "Bob Weir was great. The man can still command a stage, even with just an acoustic guitar. Very surprised by how hard he pushed himself vocally, and it was crystal clear." He was belting out blues standards like Howlin' Wolf, and could still hit the high notes on his own songs. I’m with you on this except - and this is a big exception - I would not discount Thirty Seconds Over Winterland. Great album of tunes which were largely mediocre in the studio.

For any of you who haven't gotten into live Airplane from their early days, I recommend the run of shows from 11/25-11/27/66 at the Fillmore. They're partially documented on Fillmore Auditorium: We Have Ignition, though I sometimes think I prefer the recordings I got of those shows way before that release.
