froggie
Hasn't Jeff said that "Jesus Etc." sounds like a Doobie Brothers song? when he played the intro on the last solo tour he said it sounds like Listen to the music.. listened to SBS twice so far... quite like it. the sound quality is low so it should be much better when the official thing comes out
pfox7
I am still listening to it....and still loving it. It definitely has a different (70's? I don't think so.) vibe. Peaceful...Hopeful...like "We can make it better". All in all a very natural record...obviously it lacks the discord the last two did, probably because it is the first record Jeff has made since he has been "clean". I suspect that is translating in the final product, and was probably indicative of the recording process. Anyway, I think it is an easier record to listen to, which is different than we've become accustomed to. Music doesn't have to be challenging (i.e. ten minutes of reverb/noise) to be enjoyable. blindgonzo
I find Pitchfork rather shallow and pedantic.
Spawn's dad
I wish the intro to walken was a bit 'feat-er' than it is, and the album could end with what light, though on and on isn't all that bad....I don't love the intro though. Other than that so far it seems like a pretty solid album to me.

tongue-tied
Anyway, I think it is an easier record to listen to, which is different than we've become accustomed to. Music doesn't have to be challenging (i.e. ten minutes of reverb/noise) to be enjoyable. That depends on what challenges you, I enjoy the "noise" aspects of the last record without thinking "man, this is totally challenging what I consider to be music", but I might find the lyrics to "What Light" challenging to enjoy just because they're so simple. But I'm optimistic, I think i'm going to wear out the CD this summer.
Willkoman
I love it. It could be my favorite or pretty close any way. Nels is incredible as is every other band member but after one listen it's the guitar work that stands out. I heard some Beatles and I also heard some Wilco pre AGIB. Also lots of Wilco post AGIB if that makes any sense. I've always been a fan of soul music and I heard that too. Great album from a great band that continues to change, grow and evolve. It sounds like a very cohesive record where for me AGIB did not (just my opinion!). I like that. For me SBS is a major success.

Artifex
I think these are some of the best vocals I've heard from Tweedy on a studio record. He really sounds great. Other than that, the only thing I'll say at these point is that Walken or Shake it Off would've made a better opener. I always imagined Shake it Off as the opener. However, it's hard to see Either Way anywhere else on the disc. After hearing the whole thing(admittedly only once) I'm confused as to why a song like Either Way would make the cut but We Can Make it Better or Lets Not Get Carried Away didn't...but I'm not complaining, I'm sure they will show up off Wilcoworld. P.S.- Impossible Germany...I can't help but think of smooth jazz.

Nonlinear Nonfiction
I also heard some Wilco pre AGIB. Also lots of Wilco post AGIB if that makes any sense. I hear ya. What I love about all of Wilco's albums is that each one takes a step in a new direction...every record builds on their previous work and yet they maintain what their fans have grown to love. Tweedy always seems to find a way to introduce some kind of new element on every release. The first transformation we witnessed was when the band made an effort between A.M. and Being There to get away from an album full of twangy alt-country. Each album since then has continued to grow. This time I think it is Nels and Sansone in the studio. Wilco's albums, for me, are as much about what happened to the band in the 'off-season' than what happens on the actual record or in the studio (I guess that's why I have collected a box of bootlegged live shows that will take me a lifetime to listen to). Sky Blue Sky is sweetness to my ears and I keep playing it over and over again. The new songs have a life of their own but it is also clear how they are based on the same Wilco formula I have always loved.
Jesusetc84
Impossible Germany...I can't help but think of smooth jazz. My thoughts exactly. There's a lot of smooth jazz sounds on here. Which explains a big part of why I don't like it.

So Long
smooth jazz kicks ass. Nels Cline smooth jazz guitar sounds mixed with Jeff Tweedy's lyrics is amazing! Jesusetc84...are we gonna need to go outside and fight about this?!
Jesusetc84
Because you're so hardcore right? Nah. I'm not hardcore; I don't like elevator music, that's all.
Jesusetc84
smooth jazz kicks ass. I lost my focus after that. I thought everyone knew that smooth jazz was heh...not a good thing. I would've rather had more of a free jazz type Wilco record then a smooth jazz one.
