nettles
The Son Volt album "Trace" is probably the best alt-country album of all time. Truly a classic, but my all time fav would be The Jayhawks 'Blue Earth'
Lammycat
Ah, The Beat Farmers. Definitely in the alt-country vein. I had forgotten about them. Another band I remember from the 80s/early 90s alt-country style was Dumptruck. Even the Meat Puppets have a touch of alt-country in them, though I wouldn't call them an alt-country outfit. LouieB
I second those who mentionned Freakwater... Each time I listen to them, I think it's one of the best country or alt.country bands ever. You got it...great suggestion. LouieB

Mr. Heartbreak
Speaking of Blue Mountain, there used to be a pretty good band from their neck of the woods called Circuit Riders. I'd put them in this category, too.

Calexico
The term itself, to me, brings to mind a mid 90's period mostly. So with that in mind I would recommend The Jayhawks, Son Volt, Lambchop, Freakwater, Gillian Welch among others.

Speaking of Dillard & Clark, "Through the Morning, Through the Night", which followed "Fantastic Expedition...", is also pretty good. These two albums are also packaged as a double album now, as I recall.
