Ah, The Beat Farmers. Definitely in the alt-country vein. I had forgotten about them. Another band I remember from the 80s/early 90s alt-country style was Dumptruck. Even the Meat Puppets have a touch of alt-country in them, though I wouldn't call them an alt-country outfit.

I second those who mentionned Freakwater...

 

Each time I listen to them, I think it's one of the best country or alt.country bands ever.

The term itself, to me, brings to mind a mid 90's period mostly. So with that in mind I would recommend The Jayhawks, Son Volt, Lambchop, Freakwater, Gillian Welch among others.

Speaking of Dillard & Clark, "Through the Morning, Through the Night", which followed "Fantastic Expedition...", is also pretty good. These two albums are also packaged as a double album now, as I recall.

You should get all the Freakwater cds - forget Pneumonia.
