Jai-Alai Fronton-Miami, Florida (June 22/23 1974) - I wish they would put out these two shows.

Oh hell yeah. I don't think I've heard anything from June '74 that isn't excellent. That DP that was a combo of 6/26 & 6/28 might be my favorite of the entire series.

The 5 cd set that was the soundtrack for the GD movie is consistently mind-blowing as well.

The '74 era is excellent. There are songs from this period that just worked really well with the line-up. China->Rider is a good example. While I enjoy earlier and later versions of the combo (or the songs as independents) the seque between the two songs really hit a magical peak around this time. There was something happening in the jam between the two songs that's hard to explain but it just worked really, really well.

The WRS stuff, too.

The sound seems pretty good on the shows I mentioned above - I wonder if they were recorded by Betty? I don't have those books handy to look it up.

I'm fairly certain that Kidd Candelario recorded those. I'll edit this post if I find different info.

I think you're right. I'm not real sure on Betty board recordings from '74. I know that the crew (Kidd, Parish, etc.) were patching into the soundboard often at this time, but for official and/or sbd stuff, I'm short on memory, but I think I recall that betty was not doing many of the '74 shows....

Speaking of those books - I'd still like to know why the first one you can get for 12 bucks and rest are going for 80 bucks. I shall get them someday. I should have just photocopied them when I had them a while back via inter library loan.

80 dollars? Are you shittin' me? I can't imagine that they would be out of print. They're less than 10 years old!

4/27/71 - this is the show with The Beach Boys

That's a great one. April '71 really has Pig at the height of his rapping powers - I seem to recall the Lovelight at that show as being really extraordinary.

Is it this one:

I was goin' down the street one day

Right after me and my old lady got in a fight

I see this dude on the corner

He said, "Say, man, you look like you kinda lonesome."

I said, "Yeah, well, me and my old lady we had

kind of a fallin' out, you understand."

He said, "Well, hey listen-- I just got into bidness."

I said, "You just got into bidness?

Jack, what you talkin' about, bidness?"

He say,"I'm in commercial merchandise," he says.

I say, "What kind of merchandise you got?"

He say, "Whatchoo' want?"

Well, I said, "You got any dope?

Are you in the automobile bidness?

Do you fix refrigerators?

Do you fix windows?

Are you a plumber?"

He said, "No, man. I got myself a Cadillac."

I said, "Oh, yeah."

He say, "What seem to be your trouble?"

I said, "Well, you know, me and my old lady,

we just had a little falling out."

He said, "Oh, that's it, huh?"

He say, "Well, listen: I got about anything you want."

He say, uh "How much money you got in yo' pocket?"

And I tell him, "Well, I got about a dollar and a quarter."

He kinda step back a taste and say, "Dollar and a quarter?

Wait a minute now! You can't buy much for a dollar and a quarter!"

I said, "I don't want much-- I just want a little bit."

He said, "Well, maybe I can fix you up."

This fella slow down

And a-turn around...

Slow down and a-turn around

Scratch his head just a little bit

He say,"I got a I-DEEEEEEEA!"

And he said,

"I got the impression that you ain't lookin'

for nothin' high class,

Just somethin' to take care of yo' natch'ral

needs."

He say, "Look down on the corner. See that girl?"

I said, "What girl?"

He said, "The big one!"

"That a GIRL? I thought that was the Brooklyn Bridge."

He say, "How much you got?"

I say, "A dollar and a quarter."

"SOLD! The Brooklyn Bridge!"

So I went down and said,

"The man on the street said I can come home withchoo."

She said,"It's all right now, Daddy,

Show me what you can do."

And don't you know, now, people,

She treated me nice and kind.

She made me

She made me think

She sure did treat me fine

For a buck and a quarter

What more do you want?

For a buck and a quarter!

What do you want?

Things get goin'

They don't be slowin'

Cooked on this side

Say now, Mama, won't you roll on over

Let me jump your wagon and ride

Let me jump on your wagon and ride, now Mama

Jump on your wagon and ride

That's all I need

A little bit of love

A little bit of love in my soul

And a whole other kind of places

And a whole other kind of tastes-es

That's all I need

That's all I got to git, now

All right!

Cost me a buck and a quarter

For my pony ride

Twenty more dollars

When the doctor was by my side

He's got that needle

Sayin' "Brother, are you in trouble,

Thinkin' that was the way to go."

She may have been fun

But it wasn't no fun later on

No it wasn't

Went around

All over town

Went around

Over town

Wond'rin' what my lady was up to now

Just a-wond'rin' what she's doin'

While I'm on the prowl

Axed my doctor what to do

He said, "Now, son,

I know just exactly what's wrong with you.

You need a little bit of lovin'

Good ol' love

Nothin' on the side

Need a love, a good ol' love

Don't blow your pride."

I want to tell you now

After I was feelin' so bad

And I had all them troubles

I want to tell you jus' what happened

Yes I do

Yes I do

I think that is the Good Lovin' from 4/17/71. An all-timer for sure.

I might have to dig that one out again, but I think the 4/27 Lovelight has Pig playin' matchmaker with people in the audience - hooking up guys and girls. After he gets a few couples "together" he says stuff like, "If your mama don't like it, tell her to write her Congressman! I'm just making suggestions." :worship

reviews as always, mixed:

Subject: !!!ornette coleman!!!

good show all around with lots of beautiful, almost maniacal jamming with ornette coleman to end out the second set. a percussive "the other one" explodes out of a loose, jazzy jam to start the festivities. it's worth your time for those few minutes alone.

Subject: not so hot

Now, I only listened to the last disc, but the Space is empty and the Other One never gets off the ground, the boys are riding the brake for this one. Much respect to Ornette, but he never really meshes with the band, Lovelight has a little funk to it, but doesn't scratch the surface until the end. Overall, great idea, not great results. But hey, I listened for the novelty factor and so should you, just keep the expectations low my friends.

see i can understand where that person was coming from if they wanted a normal performance. That verison is incredible, another poster put it really well. You can hear Ornette battling it out and playing around each other. The Space is killer and the other is really cool. Its nice to hear the boys keeping up with some of such high caliber.
