Well we have highjacked this one good.

So okay, the record stores are going all vinyl because it is hip and profitable and CDs are unhip and not profitable. So just as soon as vinyl wanes there will be a resurgence of CDs (trust me it will happen) and they will have to adjust. But at this point you can get anything you want (CD wise) on Amazon from the dealers, so the local hip vinyl stores just aren't going to carry product that doesn't move.

good point.  i'm so thankful for amazon, but would really like to support my local store.  glad to see your optimism about the resurgence of CDs.  i'd love to be able to get gatefold artwork with a CD.  that would be cool.

Certainly the CD is taking kind of a death spiral at the moment, but so did the cassette tape, LP, the 45, and even the 78 not so many years ago.  CDs have advantages the rest of those formats don't, like you can play them in a car, get a whole ton of music on one, etc. But who knows.  It could end up at the 8 track, which has not come back but somehow I doubt it. The vast majority of folks who are not downloading are still buying CDs.

The thing is, it's easier to play music from your phone in your car and get a whole lot more music on it than a CD.  As soon as lossless song files are made readily available, there will be no reason to own a CD.  At least vinyl gives you a different listening experience, which is why it was always stick around as a niche market.

I agree.  I recently bought a used car that did not have an iPod jack and was disappointed that I could not plug in my iPod or iPhone.  Oh well, back to the CDs.  There is something still so cool about CD box sets though.  You get the liner notes etc.  There is a place for them as well.

Agreed. I envision a time where there will be only vinyl for home use (niche market will support that unique experience) and digital for mobile and non-audiophile home. This kinda reminds me of this:

BTW, I have enjoyed all on Son Volt's recent releases. There are usually 1-2 great songs, 2-3 good songs and a few forgettable ones. But enjoyable nonetheless. I especially enjoyed the vibe of American Central Dust.

Wow, that is waaaaaay too country for my taste. Maybe it was a mistake on my part to pause Muddy Waters' One More Mile to give it a listen, but I couldn't make it past the 2-minute mark.

I really think I've gotten to the point where I can only tolerate Jay when he's at least trying to rock out.

Is there even such a thing as "way too country?"

There is for me. Even Emmylou Harris, who I absolutely love, has quite a few songs in her back catalogue that I just can't stomach. But then, I'm from New England, where we grew up making fun of this stuff, so it's amazing to me how much I have been able to get into people like Townes, Johnny Cash, or any of the older country types.

I'm glad if people dig it, though. It's always great to get new music from an artist you enjoy!

Me too.  I've moved beyond a lot of my childish beliefs & behavior, too.  ;) Stay true to your roots but keep moving on.
