darkstar
"Black Peter" Grateful Dead All of my friends come to see me last night,I was laying in my bed and dying.Annie bonneau from st. angel say the weather down there so fine. Just then the wind came squalling through the dark,But who can the weather command? Just want to have a little peace to die,And a friend or two I love at hand. Fever roll up to a hundred and five.Roll on up, gonna roll back down. One more day I find myself alive,Tomorrow maybe go beneath the ground. See here how everything lead up to this day,And its just like any other day thats ever been.Sun going up and then the sun going down.Shine through my window, and my friends they come around, come around The people might know, but the people dont care,That a man can be as poor as me.Take a look at poor peter, hes lying in pain,Now lets come run and see, run and see,Run and see, run, run and see, and see. theashtraysays
The Blind Boys of Alabama did a version of Amazing Grace set to The House of the Rising Sun. It's breathtaking. Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. No one will have a clue who it is... they'll just think it's pretty. Love the irony. Mountain Bed is great, but people hearing it for the first time wouldn't get it. Same is probably true for Videotape, and Last Flowers. Those are really moving, emotional songs for me, but only 'cause I've heard them so much. I think On & On & On would be the Wilco song of choice.

Sweet Papa Crimbo
Across the Border I know the know it's about illegal immigration...but I feel a deeper meaning... Tonight my bag is packedTomorrow I'll walk these tracksThat will lead me across the border Tomorrow my love and IWill sleep 'neath auburn skiesSomewhere across the border We'll leave behind my dearThe pain and sadness we found hereAnd we'll drink from the Bravo's muddy waters Where the sky grows grey and whiteWe'll meet on the other sideThere across the border For you I'll build a houseHigh up on a grassy hillSomewhere across the border Where pain and memoryPain and memory have been stilledThere across the border And sweet blossoms fills the airPastures of gold and greenRoll down into cool clear waters And in your arms 'neath the open skiesI'll kiss the sorrow from your eyesThere across the border Tonight we'll sing the songsI'll dream of you my corazonAnd tomorrow my heart will be strong And may the saints' blessing and graceCarry me safely into your armsThere across the border For what are weWithout hope in our heartsThat someday we'll drink from God's blessed waters And eat the fruit from the vineI know love and fortune will be mineSomewhere across the border

pnêyu
I have an iTunes mix of this ready to go, should I be hit by MUNI and the iPod miraculously survives. Only two songs are absolute requirements: Prince's "Let's Go Crazy" ("Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to get through this thing called life") and "Live Forever" by Oasis--all the better if the coffin is serenaded by my loved ones playing the latter on Rock Band. solace
opening song: The Shining by Badly Drawn Boy (probably would extend the cello + french horn intro out a bit) outro: If You Want To Sing Out, Sing Out by Cat Stevens i have other songs in between, but for some reason they're escaping me right now
Mr. Kinsley
When my 20 year old cousin died, two of his friends played Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah at the memorial service. There was not a dry eye in the house after that. That song was my first thought. Although I'd go with Jeff Buckley's version - which I'm shocked nobody mentioned. Long As I Can See The Light - CreedenceTed Hawkins does an amazing cover of this where the bulk of the song is acapella.
