Ghost of Electricity
The idea is to keep it specific so we can hear things we might not otherwise hear. Originally i thought to stick to the positives, but as one man's treasure, is another man's trash, i figured what the hell. The idea is not do discuss the general direction of the band which has already been done ad nauseum elsewhere. My own personal first impression list: positive: 1. the single bending note on the fuzz guitar over the chord progression in (The Song) 2. the right channel electric rhythm guitar on the 2 and 4 in "I'll Fight" 3. the ending to "Everlasting Everything." negative: 1. i haven't heard any bits by Glenn that blow me away, like the drum beat that comes in at :59 in IATTBYH which is freaking phenomenal. which isn't to say it's not in here somewhere, but i haven't heard it yet. solid drumming, of course, but still looking for that unusual, creative bit that i haven't heard. help. where is it? 2. Nels' guitar which comes in at 2:30 in "You Never Know" Think he overdoes it on the whammy bar, and it grates. 3. the pedal steel that i was expecting based on the Rolling Stone article- it's not Wilco's fault that those dufuses (or is the plural dufi?) don't know a pedal from a lap. CaptainTrips
Positive: Making One Wing more concise Negative: Changing the lyrics in Sonny Feeling...the "darkest day is nothing new" part....the other shoe that waits for you...remember to show gratitude? really? I think "You know I won't be there for youAnd this is how I know it's trueThe darkest day is good for youThe darkest night is nothing new" was a thousand times better
Jesusetc84
Positive: Wilco (The Album) Negative: Having to wait for the EP/ first single to hear "Dark Neon"
Dude
negative: 1. i haven't heard any bits by Glenn that blow me away, like the drum beat that comes in at :59 in IATTBYH which is freaking phenomenal. which isn't to say it's not in here somewhere, but i haven't heard it yet. solid drumming, of course, but still looking for that unusual, creative bit that i haven't heard. help. where is it? I've heard a ton of interesting drumming on this album - if you want to a specific track, the drums on Everlasting is pretty inventive IMO. He's definitely doing more here than the more straightforward timekeeping on SBS.
So Long
Positive: New Wilco album. Negatives: Endless threads.
W(TF)
positive: 3. the ending to "Everlasting Everything." Lord, yes. Those Cline Birds might be the most beautiful guitar sounds I have ever heard come out of my speakers. I want 5 more minutes of fade out, Reservations style. negative: 1. i haven't heard any bits by Glenn that blow me away, like the drum beat that comes in at :59 in IATTBYH which is freaking phenomenal. which isn't to say it's not in here somewhere, but i haven't heard it yet. solid drumming, of course, but still looking for that unusual, creative bit that i haven't heard. help. where is it? Hmm, I tend to agree with Dude.. Glenn is doing a lot more here than on SBS. mp3 sound probably isn't helping our impression of his work. But since you mentioned it, yeah...that was the hit that struck me like lightning from God and made me a Wilco fan for life.

One Wing has a pretty sweet beat when the drums come in, its no IATTBYH but it's not exactly a standard beat
blureu
[Negative: Having to wait for the EP/first single to hear "Dark Neon"] Didn't Jeff play this song live recently?

RainDogToo
Lord, yes. Those Cline Birds might be the most beautiful guitar sounds I have ever heard come out of my speakers. I want 5 more minutes of fade out, Reservations style. I agree, it does have the most beautiful ending. I think it may be my favorite instrumental piece on the album! And I too wish it were longer.... maybe when they play it live.

Gobias Industries
Positive: There is a new wilco record. One Wing.Negative: The Cavs choked a massive lead away. I'm blaming the record for this.
DAngerer09
positive little bits: - i love those distant sounding rim-shots (or whatever they are, I'm no percussion expert) that come in at 2:19 in Solitaire- i love the chord change/change in direction of the whole song at 1:06 in Deeper Down. There are so many good bits in this song, I'm not going to mention them all.- the intro to I'll Fight is fantastic- i like the double tracked vocals in Solitaire. negative bits:-one wing ends too abruptly- i know some of you prefer the more concise version, but that song could go on for at least another 30 seconds or minute and not be "excessive noodling." The song just keeps building and it just ends too quickly. I want to hear them play!-Country Disappeared. The whole song. Don't like. Sorry.-the repeating "I don't care anymore" lyrics in You Never Know gets kinda grating.-For as much as I like the section that begins at 1:06 in Deeper Down, bring those drums up in the mix. I love what's going on there, but can hardly hear them.
HungryHippo
I could seriously write a book about how great this album is, however, if I had to choose one moment in particular that strikes me as my fav moment in the whole of the record, it would be I'll Fight. its just so intense and sweet. this song moves me. "I'll die alone like Jesus on the cross, my faith can not be tossed, my life will not be lost, my love comes across." wow!!! as for the con, I'm having trouble getting into You and I. that's not really a con, just an obstacle I've yet to overcome. it kinda strikes me more as an ode to Wilco's fans as it does a love song. a.miller
Should have opened with One Wing. I like the whole album, but The Song is kinda dopey IMO.
Moss
I know someone mentioned it but I would have liked "Nova" to go on a little longer at the end. It starts to really build and then just kind of ends. Maybe more screaming and freaking out by Jeff.
mfwahl
Should have opened with One Wing. I like the whole album, but The Song is kinda dopey IMO.It's starting to become a skipper for me.
lost highway
One Wing has a pretty sweet beat when the drums come in, its no IATTBYH but it's not exactly a standard beat Dude, if any of you play, try sitting behind a drum set and playing Glenn's part for One Wing. It's quite a challenge, and when you focus on it you can see how aggressively he drives the verse of the song. Positive:Crazy percussion sounds shooting out every measure on BBN.Deeper Down sounding like cinematic magic.Sonny Feeling proving way less thin than the live bootlegs made me think it was.Feist nailing the harmonies on what seemed like a sweet trifle, but may be the most deceptively complex lyrics on the record.Nels proving himself to be a craftsman of sound and texture, and not only capable of the 'wank-fest' he has been accused of. Negative:The lap steel on Deeper Down makes me think the cops are coming when I'm driving (literally).Being unable to share with many other VCers the delight in the fact that there is a new Wilco album and it is outstanding. (not really gonna effect my listening but the negativity seems especially surprising if only because I can relate.)
nodep5
Positive: My favorite band has just put out some new tunes Negative: Too many musicians are now Wilco fans. It seems that since Glenn and Nels have gotten involved Wilco fan base has become focused on musicanship. I don't know about you but I never have been attracted to this band for musicianship. I was attracted becasue the quality of the songwriting, ear for music history, jeff's voice and they were fun. Sometimes I read posts about Glenn's drumming and Nels finger work and I think this is a Rush message board.

JerseyMike
The lap steel on Deeper Down makes me think the cops are coming when I'm driving (literally). Summer Teeth had the same effect on my driving. I was constantly looking in the rearview.
