Synthesizer Patel
the new joanna newsom album should be out this year, or so it says in this very annoying video: hereand if it's anything near as good as her last one (and the live songs suggest it is) it will be incredible. animal collective will have that visual album out, i'd assume, this year too - but they put an album out a year, so it's not quite as interesting as joanna newsom. Jay
http://pitchfork.com/news/37527-the-wrens-promise-new-album-again/ The Wrens Promise New Album (Again) Last January, we posted a story titled "The Wrens Are Back! (For Real This Time, They Swear)". Back then, the notoriously slow New Jersey band-- whose last LP, The Meadowlands, came out seven years ago-- promised a new album in 2009. Well, that didn't happen. But it might. Soon. Maybe! A new post on the Wrens' website states, "We haven't started new recording yet (I know, I know, believe me), [but] in a very real way, we've never been more ahead or more prepared. Or had more plans or ideas. Weird, I know, but sometimes such are one's middle years." The band list some reasons for the delay here, too. The band also claims that "official full-band recording starts next Wednesday, January 13th, 2010, at approximately 6:00pm E.S.T. in a New Jersey basement studio." And they plan to finish recording by June. "No, this June." While the Wrens didn't release an album last year, they did put out some demos and play some shows, so that's something. And they're playing a show at Boston's Middle East January 16, so that's something else.

M. (hristine
Sin Ropas ~ Holy BrokenTo be released this month. It's been 5 years since Fire Prizes, which was reviewed thusly: A dark dusky mournful twang, stretched out over an abstract rock and roll frame, recalling the above mentioned outfits, but also the folky slowcore of Rex, the intimate dark country of Sparklehorse and the indie twang of the Grifters. Everything is shaded and dusty, the guitars go from spidery and slippery, to distorted and downtuned, Hurley’s voice a whiskey soaked rasp, backed up by Iosello’s angelic vocals, slide guitars drift and shimmer, everything dramatic and minor key, haunting vocal harmonies, muted percussion and jagged riffs, the songs going from druggy sprawl to crunchy campfire stomp, but always wreathed in teary eyed melancholy and warm washed out dreaminess. Can't wait to see what Hurley and Iosello have been up to.
