NoJ
Thanks, its such a sad story. The guy really doesn't deserve the hand he was dealt but he refused to walk away from the table so.....

NoJ
Today we'll be driving way out into the sticks of northern IL to attend a wake for a friends father and then turn around and drive the other way into the city for a Festivus party. When its over we'll drive home and then get up at 630am in order to volunteer at an event for some disadvantaged kids. Wee!
ih8music
Today I didn't watch a particular sci-fi adventure movie. And i still had a pretty great day.

PopTodd
Hearing the news of Haskell Wexler's passing triggered a memory for me:Watching a screening of Wexler's Medium Cool at the Music Box Theater in Chicago back in 1995 or so.Of all people, Studs Terkel sat next to me, and he did not keep his mouth shut for the entire movie! He was on the crew (credited as "Our Man in Chicago") and commented on just about everything on screen:"Oh, hell!!! I remember that guy!!! What an asshole!""Well, that was a bitch of a day!""GodDAMN! I haven't thought of her in years!!!"And with every utterance, his wife would attempt to quiet him: "Shhh! Studs! Be quiet!"I guess the man listened enough throughout his life that he was entitled to voice a few things of his own.A great memory.A great movie.Rest in peace, Haskell. calvino
Hopefully all you Texans are out of harms way, my wife's aunt lives in the Dallas area, luckily it missed her immediate area. Just got back from Southern IL --- shit ton of flooding going on down there. The Mississippi River area by my in-laws, may surpass the flood of 93. Some of my in-laws work at Menard Penitentiary - they are in process of deciding if they have to move the convicts up to higher ground. The current sleet up here in Chicago seems pale in comparison. Albert Tatlock
Two days ago I saw an original document signed by Beria and Stalin, with Stalin's being in a childish blue pencil scrawl. A couple of hours earlier I held a paper signed by Queen Elizabeth.Quite chilling - the Stalin signature not Liz's.
John Smith
QE I or II? Either way kind of cool.
Albert Tatlock
QE2. I did not know that she signs the commissioning document/certificate for each officer in the army. I was with an ex-Royal Marines officer who was commissioned in 1972. Very clear and simple apart from the z looking like a j.

kidsmoke
I'm so sorry, NoJ. He's at peace now, but how sad for all of you who loved him. Deepest condolences.
NoJ
Thanks, all. I really was hoping that we would be giggling about his misadventures some time in the future but was also prepared for this possibility too. The guy had the biggest heart in the world and would do anything for people he loved and yet he couldn't help himself. So maddening.
Lammycat
Sorry, NoJ. Maddening, I'm sure. He's at peace, at least....

calvino
At dusk, I finally saw the two owls that have been hanging out in my back yard for last year or so - they're huge. Usually we hear them much later at night when it's too dark and the trees too high for me to ever spot them. Kids were able to see them too.
The Inside of Outside
That is very cool - owls are fascinating. Glad your kids were able to see them. I have a good friend who has an excellent owl call. When we camp every summer with him, he conjures up an owl or two every time.
calvino
When both the owls were in the back yard, they were communicating a lot to one another, after one flew off, the one left wasn't 'hoo-hooing' any longer -- so my kids tried out their owl calls and weren't successful. Definitely looked like a male and female -- at least one was larger than the other.
NoJ
That's awesome!^^ I too have been lucky enough to have Great Horned Owls in my yard and neighborhood the last few years. I was watching one at dusk just last week.
