  1. I'm not sure how those words came out of Richards' mouth. It's inexcusable. But, personally, I don't think it was an anti-black rant. It was an anti-heckler rant. If the hecklers were Asian, he would have used an Asian slur. Or if the hecklers were twangy-talking hicks, he may have bashed rednecks. I think he got to a very weird point in his mind that, once he snapped, he decided to offend the idiot hecklers as extreme and hateful as he could possibly imagine. I noticed on Lettermen that Richards used the word "hate" a few times. I think he felt massive hatred directed at himself, and want
  2. "I'm over the moon about it. I think it will be a really beautiful record." I've got a gut feeling the next Wilco record is gonna be a real gem with wide appeal...I cannot wait.
  3. I'm completely 180 degrees from the person posting this thread. I think the DVD is beautiful. I'm not sure what someone would expect from a documentation of a solo tour. The music's good. I found Tweedy's quotes and personality intriguing and interesting. The song selections are nice.....How to Fight Lonliness, Summerteeth, Black Eye, Future Age, Laminated Cat and Was I In Your Dreams are particularly fantastic.
  4. I'll second "Unwelcome Guest".....it may be my favorite Mermaid song. Jeff would do a great Big Star "Blue Moon". I'd like to hear the band play Ronettes' "Be My Baby".....Glenn would smoke on the drums...and John and Pat could be the background singers....it'd be sweet.
  5. That was Scott McCaughey of the Minus Five. These solo shows sound great. I'd love to hear "Lullaby for Rafters and Beams" live. Maybe Wilco will perform it some day. To capture the sound of the soundtrack version, Glenn can invent an instrument that makes the sound of skates on ice.
  6. RICHARD BUCKNER I'd love to see Buckner be able to play in front of hundreds if not thousands of people every night. The guy deserves a bigger crowd than he usually plays to.
  7. Patience is hard, but it IS a virtue.
  8. I feel bad for Michael J. Fox, but y'know, it's really hard to take anyone involved with Back to The Future 3 seriously.
  9. Rush indeed went over the line. But he has a point about Fox's ad being misleading. Jim Talent of Missouri actually supports stem cell....ADULT stem cell. He does not support EMBRYONIC stem cell. Neither does Jeff Suppan, Patricia Heaton, Mike Sweeney and Jim Caviezal.... St. Louis, MO (LifeNews.com) -- Pro-life advocates in Missouri have prepared a response ad to one that actor Michael J. Fox has made in numerous states that contains misleading information about pro-life candidates and their views on stem cell research. The new ads feature St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Jeff Suppan an
  10. Be My Baby - Ronettes Up On the Roof - The Drifters Don't Worry Baby - Beach Boys
  11. I don't own much of their stuff. But Kerosene Hat is a great album. I, too, love "Nostalgia". "Loser" is also one of my faves.
  12. Very good point. I haven't heard the new one yet, but I too remember the so-so response to Chutes. I think people were expecting the cool, cohesive, artsy vibe of Inverted World, and instead got something a little more loose and rockin' and all over the place. Saint Simon is a great pop song, imo. Anyone heard The Shins' "They'll Soon Discover" off the Spongebob movie soundtrack? It's great.
  13. Depending on the day, my favorite Wilco album is always Being There OR one of the others. It will never drop out of the top 2. What's amazing about it, to me, is how great BOTH discs of Being There are. Disc 1 seems to be more of the crowd pleaser....and it was to me for a long time. But Disc 2 is equally great.

Ditto. March 16-20, 1992 is one of my favorite all-time discs. Peter Buck, who produced it, says "I'm as proud of it as anything I've done." That says a lot. The album ends with Fatal Wound, Sandusky and Wipe The Clock.....a phenomenal finish to a great album.
  15. No doubt that the Bennett-era Wilco shows were fun. Sounds dumb, but Bennett just visually added some interest to concerts. I remember shows when the band would meander out, looking every bit like a rock band on the road. Tweedy usaully would start off looking tired and/or drugged up....totally focused on the songs....almost oblivious to anything else....one show I was up front, and it looked like Tweedy was in another world....I was rather worried for him. But after a few songs, he'd snap out of it. Coomer always seemed alert, but he had a ragged look about him. Stirrat always looked cool up
  16. I watched the free stream as well and Laminated Cat with Glenn was one of the highlights. Glenn rules.
  17. Haven't seen this mentioned: (Page 45 of Nov. 2 Rolling Stone in the "Smoking Section" by Austin Scaggs) "I just wish I shut up more," Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy tells the Smoking Section about the fantastic new DVD 'Sunken Treasure', which documents life on the road during his recent solo tour. "Antyime I open my mouth and I'm not singing, I just want to crawl into a fucking electrical outlet." Though many of his offhand comments - onstage and on the bus - are existentially awesome, he sometimes offers a little too much information. "All I do is fart and swear, scratch my balls, play gu
  18. Lots of good songs mentioned......Buckner's "Elizabeth Childers" is indeed a sad tune...as is pretty much that whole album. These come to mind: R.E.M. - "The Wrong Child" Tori Amos - "Winter" Lisa Germano - "The Darkest Night Of All" Lisa Germano - "Singing to the Birds" (I could name many other sad Germano songs...)
  19. "The question - how is Tweedy to know this drunken fool won't do something harmful? Is not the question I want answered. The question I want answered is - why would Tweedy think this drunken fool would do him any harm?" My question is, why would Tweedy NOT think this drunken fool would do him any harm? What if the a-hole passes out while holding Jeff's face and Tweedy gets pulled to the ground. What if a-hole, drunk guy accidentally rams his finger into Jeff's eyeball? What if a-hole, drunk guy decides to lift Tweedy on his shoulders to impress his frat brothers? What a-hole, drunk gu
  20. Anybody climbing on stage at a concert is an asshole. Anybody putting his hands on the face of a performer is an asshole AND a threat....how is Tweedy to know this drunken fool won't do something harmful? I still don't know what Tweedy did, but I like the story that he punched him. And you can't compare this to someone staying after the show to meet the perfomer. People want to say hi and shake the hand because they want the performer to know they did a great job. And yes, it IS cool to have a photo of yourself with someone you admire. I don't get your point. Oh yeah...ahem....anyone ha
  21. Meloy's voice may be a road block for some. But other than that, what there is NOT to like about The Decemberists? I've been listening a week straight to their newest and love it. I think it may well be their best. To me, it holds together as a great "album".....I can't say I want to skip over any part of it. "The Island" is unreal....it shouldn't work, but it does....the prog-rock sounds in it someow sound new and fresh. The "Perfect Crime" is a fun, groovy curveball in the middle of the disc. Lyrically, Crane Wife is interesting as well...it's almost like being in another world and
  22. I like many already mentioned. At the top of my list: Okkervil River Richard Buckner The Decemberists
  23. I just today bought the Crane Wife today. Have listened twice. I heard 4 or 5 songs on their KCRW performance (I listened to archive a few times) so I kind of new what to expect. I think it's a great buy. Funny how we all here things differently. I LOVE "The Island" epic as well as "The Perfect Crime". To me, they have a mystery and aura about them similar to early R.E.M. I think it's the unique lyrics, unique lead singer voice, unique cd packaging....I'm not sure. And interesting this is their first big label record....much like R.E.M. jumping to Warner after a few great albums. The
  24. I apologize for being a "smug little shit" in my earlier post. I tried a little sarcasm and it probably didn't come across like I hoped. It's totally cool that we all have different opinions on Wilco's new tunes...even in this case when I disagree with those who are cold on the new songs. I, personally, just cringe a little bit when some of us get overly critical after the first couple performances of a brand new live song. To me, it's like looking over a painter's shoulder half-way through completion and saying, "I think you could put a little more shadow on the nose"....the painter pro
