What's the price of gas where you are?
uncool2pillow replied to Twisted Acres's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
My pocketbook is more important than your life! -
My school has a 9-week course for 7th graders called Consumer Education. We have a great teacher who shows kids a lot of the problems w/ credit cards and the financial industry. But I think a lot of that is like drug/alcohol education. Once they're out of the classroom and American culture kicks them over the head with consume, consume, consume, the give in.

Never mind... Back up to $146 this morning. -
I teach in the same 1-high school district I graduated from. 20th reunion begins tonight. I have no interest. I have 2 close friends from HS that I keep in touch with and that's all I need.

Covers that you would LIKE to see...

I can hear him singing I Am Trying to Break Your Heart or Ashes of American Flags before Heavy Metal Drummer. -
Finally got around to watching this. A gut wrenching movie. Great performances.

Great version. I love the strings arrangement and your voice. Besides being the obvious song to cover (and there's nothing wrong w/ that) it's very cool. No regrets needed.

Smashing Pumpkins to play Horseshoe Casino
uncool2pillow replied to LouieB's topic in Someone Else's Song
My Morning Jacket is playing Harrah's Casino in Council Bluffs, IA. Not sure why. There should be a few great venues across the river in Omaha, NE. -
I saw him open up for John Mayer last year in Des Moines (I was there primarily for Folds, my wife 50/50 Folds and Mayer). He put on a great show, to a song he made up based on a flier he was handed while walking in downtown DM. My wife just brought this one to my attention, too. Pretty funny.

I made my kids a mix CD today: 1. Rollerskate Skinny - Old 97's (my daughter's song, I hope she doesn't develop an eating disorder) 2. King of All of the World - Old 97's (my son's song) 3. Here Comes the Sun - The Beatles (that song from Bee Movie) 4. Sir Duke - Stevie Wonder 5. Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard - Paul Simon 6. Sugar Magnolia - Grateful Dead 7. Hound Dog - Elvis Presley 8. Do It Again - Steely Dan 9. Can You Picture That? - Dr. Teeth & The Electric Mayhem (Wilco should cover!) 10. Meet Me in the Meadow - Paul Westerberg (Open Season Soundtrack) 11. This Must Be the Pl

How Baseball is Rigged for Lefties
uncool2pillow replied to bigshoulders's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
I don't know enough about the subject, but reading the original post and caliber66's reply makes me think it's probably a wash. The topic reminds me of one of the best baseball books I've ever read: Tragedy and Triumph in Mudville by Stephen J.400 ay Gould. A great essay about the nearly statistical impossibility of another .400 hitter. -
I hardly ever pull this one out. In my mind, half the songs are Jayhawks songs, so I forget about it.

Here's hoping this is the beginning of the end of the bubble. Not holding my breath, though! -
My hat's off to you for working in an inner-city school. Every time I hear teachers in my building complain, I remember my days as a substitute in some of the most troubling schools in inner-city DM. Then I remind myself that inner-city DM is nothing compared to places like Chicago, LA, NY, and DC.

Ugghh, never liked that. I'll take Feliz Navidad However, Escovedo doing I Wanna Be Your Dog! -
Edie Brickell and her "stepson" Harper Simon. Pretty good, mellow music.

I have a colleague whose son went to Montessori school for a year. Every day, he chose to cut carrots, so that's what he did. I Am Jack's War on War, I appreciate your response. The Lasch essay was interesting. One of the most challenging aspects of maintaining as democratic society is educating all. It's impossible to educate all equally because each of us has unique capabilities. I see so many kids in my school who would benefit from a more vocational education. They would be happier at school and better prepared for a happy, productive, even affluent career. Our suburban school

Very cool, esp. When Doves Cry!

I'm somewhat surprised to read that someone who espouses so many liberal beliefs would be looking for ways to opt out of the public school system. Do you support vouchers to help others below your SES do the same? As a public school teacher (and a moderate conservative), I have mixed feelings about this issue. In theory I support it, but I see that my school's hands are tied so tight by federal and state regulations that our ability to innovate is seriously restrained. So my current position is that I would fully support vouches if any school receiving federal funds were held to the sam

A fun read... Light, exciting. All the better because it's supposedly a true story. I heard the movie (21 - based loosely on this book) was kind of lame. Next up... A little more serious subject matter.

I think McCain was one of the few Republicans who didn't go hog wild at the trough of earmarks while they were the majority.
-
If the Republicans had nominated about anyone running besides McCain, I would've probably followed suit as an Obamacan. I have a lot of respect for the man, but as a conservative, I just can't pull the trigger while McCain is the other option. Thanks for posting that interesting article.
