  1. I hardly ever pull this one out. In my mind, half the songs are Jayhawks songs, so I forget about it.
  2. Here's hoping this is the beginning of the end of the bubble. Not holding my breath, though!
  3. My hat's off to you for working in an inner-city school. Every time I hear teachers in my building complain, I remember my days as a substitute in some of the most troubling schools in inner-city DM. Then I remind myself that inner-city DM is nothing compared to places like Chicago, LA, NY, and DC.
  4. Ugghh, never liked that. I'll take Feliz Navidad However, Escovedo doing I Wanna Be Your Dog!
  5. Edie Brickell and her "stepson" Harper Simon. Pretty good, mellow music.
  6. I have a colleague whose son went to Montessori school for a year. Every day, he chose to cut carrots, so that's what he did. I Am Jack's War on War, I appreciate your response. The Lasch essay was interesting. One of the most challenging aspects of maintaining as democratic society is educating all. It's impossible to educate all equally because each of us has unique capabilities. I see so many kids in my school who would benefit from a more vocational education. They would be happier at school and better prepared for a happy, productive, even affluent career. Our suburban school
  7. I'm somewhat surprised to read that someone who espouses so many liberal beliefs would be looking for ways to opt out of the public school system. Do you support vouchers to help others below your SES do the same? As a public school teacher (and a moderate conservative), I have mixed feelings about this issue. In theory I support it, but I see that my school's hands are tied so tight by federal and state regulations that our ability to innovate is seriously restrained. So my current position is that I would fully support vouches if any school receiving federal funds were held to the sam
  8. A fun read... Light, exciting. All the better because it's supposedly a true story. I heard the movie (21 - based loosely on this book) was kind of lame. Next up... A little more serious subject matter.
  9. "Jimi Hendrix stole this song from Bob Dylan, we're stealin' it back!"
  10. I think McCain was one of the few Republicans who didn't go hog wild at the trough of earmarks while they were the majority.
  11. If the Republicans had nominated about anyone running besides McCain, I would've probably followed suit as an Obamacan. I have a lot of respect for the man, but as a conservative, I just can't pull the trigger while McCain is the other option. Thanks for posting that interesting article.
  12. According to pollstar, Gary Louris is playing Blues on Grand in Des Moines (?) on Sept. 9.
  13. Thank you. I always remember my H.S. government teacher, Mr. McDonald, saying he read it every 4th of July. I try to continue that tradition. I have seen the real thing at the National Archives. It's under so much glass, it's pretty underwhelming. The words are much more moving than the piece of paper they were written on.
  14. Fireworks for those of you who aren't seeing the real thing tonight.
  15. Salvation Blues is a MUCH better album than Vagabonds IMO. Rainy Day Music is the only decent post-Olson Jayhawks album, but it's a great one.
  16. I'm glad to hear about people going. Some good bands, but I can't justify the ticket price and the time away from kids on a holiday weekend. Enjoy! Let's hope it's successful enough to continue and to grow.
  17. Bush Tours America To Survey Damage Caused By His Disastrous Country I don't care if you totally disagree w/ the sentiment here, it's damn funny!
  18. Just got back. Liked what I saw between the 30,000 potty breaks my kids took! It had something to do with a robot, right?
  19. I think the world is better off with the allies having won WWII (despite what happened in Dresden, Tokyo, Hiroshima, Nagasaki, etc.) than if those civilians hadn't died. We can argue whether those bombing campaigns were necessary or even useful, but I'm sure lots of civilians died in many other "needed" bombing raids.
