  1. Set the Twilight Reeling has some great production. I love Lou with horns. Just not enough strong songs.
  2. J Geils > than NWA? I don't listen to either much, but which group has had the bigger influence? J Geils went from a derivative blues act to bubble gum pop. I like a lot of their stuff, but there's not much original or noteworthy. The Cars put out a few great new wave LP's and then a bunch of schlock. NWA pretty much invented Gangster Rap. Ice Cube and Dr. Dre continue to be hugely influential figures. Trent Reznor's influence will stretch further than Geils, Deep Purple, and maybe others on the list as well.
  3. I wouldn't hold your breath. I think Tweedy generally likes the meanings being enigmatic.
  4. Lou's solo record is sketchy, but he should make it for Transformer, Berlin, Blue Mask, New York, and his general influence on the indie scene.
  5. Hanging out with Bob Mould today. Songwriting workshop, Q&A (which I may or may not be able to attend), solo show tonight. Wish it was w/ his band, but oh well. http://www.desmoinesmc.com/education/music-university/
  6. Finished it Thursday night. I was watching it on my laptop and my wife kept laughing at me tensely grabbing my head during the climax. Wow!
  7. Thanks. Well controlled under meds, but seizures are scary as shit.
  8. Seizures fucking suck. My 9 year old son has epilepsy. PM me if you feel the need to discuss further.
  9. Monster has some great moments. Not their best, but I love that they made a solid rock record after Automatic for the People.
  10. True Detective is amazing. I always feel like humanity is a big pile of Ebola infested shit after watching it; but in a good way.
  11. I think there's about much substance in the hate being dumped on Ryan Adams' image here is there is in the accusations of Wilco being dad rock.
  12. Bill Bryson - One Summer It's about 1927. Charles Lindbergh, Babe Ruth, Calvin Coolidge, the seeds of the Great Depression. Good stuff.
  13. Aeropress is the correct answer. Like a French press but with a paper filter. Love mine and it was about $25 from Amazon.
  14. I don't know if it's quite essential, but Bowie's latest, The Next Day, is very, very good.
  15. Some of my favorites come close. NY by Lou Reed, Graceland by Paul Simon, Harvest Moon by Neil Young. But not quite. Still thinking.
  16. Maybe they realize it's not a fan favorite. Wilco has made very savvy business decisions throughout their career. I can't imagine there's just one LP in their Nonesuch catalog has different legal standing than the others.
