Celebrated my birthday yesterday (Capicorn version of Jan. birthday). Wife took me Meltdown Comics and Amoeba Music in Hollywood for some books and vinyl. Then a trip down Santa Monica Blvd (minor detour around the Golden Globes at the Beverly Hilton) for dinner at 3rd St Promenade. A cold and sunny b-day for sure, but quite beautiful. For those interested, the vinyl I picked up: * Townes Van Zandt - Flyin Shoes (180 g) * Mississippi John Hurt - Blessed be the Name; The Complete 1928 Okeh Recordings * Father John Misty - Fear Fun The books: * Walking Dead #106 * Mara #1 * Before Watchm

I just listened to AM for the first time in a long time and really enjoyed it. I realize JT is no longer in UT/alt.country/Americana mode, but I would love to see a record which every song had banjo, dobro or pedal steel!

I thought Extraordinary Machine was really good and really under-rated.

I am a SoCal January Birthday as well.

Just finished it! Loved it! As a nerd growing up in the 1980s, this hit home for me quite a bit.

I agree with jff above: Seagull > Epi > Mitchel. I would steer clear of Mitchel. That "bight" sound you is probably better described as "thin" due to the plywood laminate materials in contrast to the solid wood seagull which is giving a more "woody" (or as you say "deeper") tone. I would very much encourage the Seagull over even the Epi, but YMMV of course. Ultimately, you have to get the one that * feels * right.

I actually think the songs sound BETTER when striped down to his deft picking and soulful vocals. This is a must-see concert, no doubt.

... (hadn't listened to AM in a while; forgot how awesome it is. Alt.country goodness! From the ashes of the seminal band!)

I think Strangers Almanac, Love is Hell and Cold Roses are all essential DRA.

You are right, of course. I just meant that there is prolly a lot of stuff in the vaults that we don't know about. Just like UJ being a surprise to us hardcore fans. I really like the song too. My favorite from W(TA) time period.

Yes, Unlikely Japan was a good example.

Yes, I meant NOT spend There is a lot of differences (both obvious as well as subtle) when it comes to tone woods. There is a tone of great info on the interwebs like here: http://joyceandnorm.wordpress.com/2011/05/12/acoustic-guitar-tone/

Hurm. I hope it is not another live record with post-Ashes heavy material. I would love to see the collection of B-sides / rarities or perhaps something out of left field ( solo acoustic JT, Loose Fur, 24 minute drones, covers collection, ...)

Here is my two cents: 1. Should I learn on acoustic or electric (seems like I've always heard its best to start acoustic, and that's the way I'm leaning right now,but i'm interested in others' opinions) I would vote acoustic. It lends itself better to the hobbyist / living room player (like myself). Much more versatile, IMHO. 2. What is are the most important things to look for when shopping for my first instrument? I would suggest trying a few out in stores to see how they feel and respond to you and your fingers. If acoustic, I would suggest looking for an all solid wood guitar (or a

There are some great non-album tracks like Rex's Blues, Looking at the World Through a Windshield, and an acoustic Medicine Hat that are worth the entire purchase.

I may be in the minority (especially among VCr's) but the Wilco show I saw was my least favorite. The band was fine, but I was kinda put off by the venue (San Diego Opera House). My big regret was not seeing HB this year - and I had a couple of changes too! Grrrrr...
-
The second time I heard Wilco at Daphne's California Greek: different location; different song. This time, "I'll Fight" at the Rancho Santa Margarita location.
-
I saw a few good shows this year, however, two really stand our for me: Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings - They are amazing live. Great chemistry, stellar musicianship, beautiful songs. Dave is a revelation live. Justin Townes Earle - For essentially the exact same reasons as mentioned above.

Yes, I would be interested in records from these: Atoms For Peace Modest MouseIron & WineBeckNeko Case

I was sitting very close to JTE on the 12-12-12 show and I can confirm that there were no prerecorded tracks or loopers involved. Only Gibson Nick Lucas and a capo
