  1. Being there is a fantastic album. As with many of you, it inspired me to see 2 movies I had previously not seen. Its namesake which is a delightfully charming if not simple film and Chelsea Walls, so bad it is unitentionally funny. I would never tell a Wilco fan what songs to like or dislike, but the love and number of posts on this thread dedicated to The Lonely 1 is a bit baffling to me. It is the peak of comedy in Chelsea Walls, so bad that it makes me laugh every time. There is no question I believe it should be left off BT, never requested in concert and generally forgotten. But tha
  2. Wilco is supporting their new album, and playing 9 songs plus label is what a wilco concert vet would come to expect and appreciate. Before standing o, Jeff mentioned how tonight we will question why they are playing this song but in five years we will be asking why they no longer play it. A pretty accurate explanation. And if any of these songs fail to become concert staples, there will be more then one post on this board asking what happened to the last record. That is both the blessing and curse of being a long time fan. They should keep doing exactly what they are doing. Promote the
  3. It is a little late, but after reading the very nice personal George Martin meeting in this forum, I thought I would share what I wrote in my blog just after returning home from Toronto. If you are interested in this type of thing, enjoy. In order to start putting down my thoughts, I needed let go a huge exhale, similar to the one I let out 48 hours ago. To begin to describe this night would be pointless. It lives inside me, and can only be remotely conveyed by words. In the Aeroplane over the Sea is as timeless and perfect as music can ever be. And the man behind it is special, mysteriou
  4. If Wilco is gaining new fans either from the previous or upcoming album, I question the musical tastes of those people. I long ago stopped trying to convert people, and am getting to the point where I am embarrassed to be so affiliated with a band who peaked (in my humble opinion) in the early 2000's and have been on a steady downhill since the residency. I still love the band and would never bash them to a potential new fan. This teaser however does nothing to diminish the bad taste of "...the Album."
  5. In Toronto for Jeff Mangum tonight! Just biked by the super small church where he is playing. I am not a Christian, but looking forward to religious experience.
  6. I agree the album is good not great, but way way better then Pitchfork would want us to believe. It is the power and energy of their live performance which caught my attention and which has hooked me on this band for the time being. I will say the one new song performed at the Hideout was pretty good. I would still rather see a great live performance with a decent album then the other way around.
  7. I saw The Head and the Heart for the third time this summer last night at the Hideout. The previous two were as openers: first for Iron and Wine at Pritzker, then for the Decemberists at Aragon. After both shows, my wife and i agreed the opener was better. For the Millenium Park show, I went because I go to almost all the free Monday night shows there. I have never loved Iron and Wine, but judging by the huge crowd that night, others do. Still The Head and the Heart was better. The Decemberists however are one of my favorite bands. For the opener to upstage them was a bit of a surprise
  8. Now that we have heard from Dale Murphy, I anxiously await Andy Van Slyke's take.
  9. 1. XRT (I figured a lot more people would be the same) I moved from LA to Chicago in the summer of 2000. XRT was such an upgrade over the Blink 182 and Moby that KROQ was playing. I remember seeking out Wilco thanks to Outtamind and Jayhawks (I'm gonna make you love me) my first summer in Chicago. 2.Wilco at Riv late 2000 followed almost immediately by Tweedy solo at Abbey Pub also late 2000. Jeff solo was what hooked me when I realized he was a singer songwriter on par with the musicians I listened to growing up.
  10. I was lucky enough to score 2 tickets in Toronto. I have been beyond excited all weekend. In fact, there is almost no way the show itself can top the lead up to it in which I will smile every day knowing I get to hear the voice sing the songs that have meant so much to me for the past 10 or so years.
  11. The original news clip is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U55mgeVlcL4 Viva Antoine Dodson! Hide your kids, hide your wife
  12. I love the one off show. It leads to a more surprising set list with far less accurate guesses. For instance IATTBYH is finishing up, and the guitar tech hands Jeff his next guitar as the noise was finishing up. On the "evening with Wilco" tour that meant One Wing was next. Last night it was right into Bull Black Nova. A very little thing, and something that can be remedied by not reading set lists, but a nice surprise none the less. The open of ST/Ashes was very soulful. Say You Miss Me followed by She's a jar was fantastic. Plus two of those 4 have Jeff on harmonica. I love Red Eyed
  13. I agree, this is ridiculous. Any half witted Wilco fan living in Chicago had to leave city limits in order to see them this year. Maybe if I submit my travel expenses to Wilco management, they would reimburse half.
  14. So worth the 24 hour trip. To all the fine people of Pittsburgh, you have a very very nice city. The Warhol is a destination museum, the hotcakes at Pamela's could not be beat, the Pitt/Melon campus was nice and active on such a lovely spring night, high grades all around. Now for the reason I came to your lovely city, the acoustic set could have gone on all night. In various posts about the different shows people have mentioned how they thought the set dragged a bit, I strongly disagree. Spiders was worth the trip alone but Laminated Cat really stood out. It was full sounding, powerful
  15. Thanks, but isn't Nels the fashionista of the group? I am much more concerned with whether Nels was wearing his red flood pants or his black tight pants, you know because I care about fashion and all.
  16. Poor Places> ----into acoustic set---- Spiders (Kidsmoke) She's A Jar Forget The Flowers Outta Mind (Outta Sight)> ----out of acoustic set---- Misunderstood This type of run is why I am flying into Pit for 24 hours. I thought the residency could never be topped but playing in and out of a full band acoustic set in the middle of a rock show was too intriguing to miss. I have driven a couple hundred miles round trip to see Wilco, I have arranged vacations around shows in Red Rocks, Austin, LA and Milwaukee (not really a vacation but a great chance to get to Milwaukee public mar
  17. Why not offer these shows for downloading the same way they offered the shows to benefit relief in Haiti? Becuase of the uniqueness of these shows and the fact that Jeff does so much talking, joking, and calling people out, it would be a nice treat both for people who attended that night to relive, or for those who were not there to experience one of these nights as best they can. They can ask for donations to the scholarship fund in return. I wrote about Friday night so for Saturday all I want to add is not enough has been said about Jeff's mastering of Fake Plastic Trees. Taking into
  18. I always feel so privileged to attend one of these shows. I have been to quite a few, I attended last night with a friend who was seeing Jeff solo for the first time. Both of us left in awe. He is that good. It does not matter if you are a fan who mainly knows Wilco material, or a crazy fan who studies Jeffs solo set lists in an attempt to learn new stuff, you get what you came for. A few new things we learned last night: Wilco likes gifts. Cookies, candy, basically anything they can eat makes a show better. Pecan Pie is a cute song, not a good song (not new) but has served its purp
  19. Wilco was pretty cool when I was in college, but so were Courtney Love, UB40, and Ace of Base. I just want college kids doing whatever they want to do and if that is not listening to Wilco, good for them. I still would take it over my current lifestyle of doing nothing I want to do and listening to Wilco.
  20. I just came on at the end of You are my face. Can someone update set list? Thanks
  21. Arena rock, something I had once thought inevitable for Wilco, was real last night. It was not bad, in fact far from it. Even though the place was not packed, there was real energy. And the band can hold the attention of many many more. Wilco could play to Lolla size crowds and entertain and keep people interested. Most of those interested people also talk, check their phones, and leave and return multiple times. Casual fans now come and see Wilco. That is different then the scene of Chicago shows past. As the size of the venue increases, the number of diehards decreases, or at least
  22. I saw the show on Saturday night. My initial reaction was this is a great film that will fly just below the radar of the independent film world. It was just one step below the production values needed to reach a larger audience. Even many Wilco fans, who are more progressive than your average audience, will be just out of reach. That said, the story was great, the acting was terrific, and the music is top notch. Unlike the Trib reporter, I do not feel the band was distracting. It was exactly what it was supposed to be, a film with amazing sound. It was a little tough to discern exact
  23. Well, Wilco must have a pipeline straight into bad movies. Embarrassed to admit I saw "I hope they Serve Beer in Hell" and even more embarrassed Wilco liscensed "Either Way" for a touching (not even close) scene near the end when Tucker is pondering all the horrible things he has done in his life.
  24. I enjoyed how the Jeff segment started. Coming back from commercial they are playing a Black Eyed Peas song that the always hip Charlie Osgood declares has been on top of the charts all summer. He is sure we had heard that song, but not so sure we have heard the music of Wilco. Actually it was quite the opposite. But I think that was the general message of the piece. Most of you have not heard Wilco, but those of you who have (us) are die hard, tour following, waiting in line for 10+ hours, message board posting, fans. That is why our moms called us all excited when they saw this piece.
