Politics 2016 (election edition)Oil Can Boyd replied to lost highway's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning My college-aged son didn't vote. He said that he didn't like either candidate and that his vote in Massachusetts - where he is registered - wouldn't make a difference because Clinton was going to win it easily. I tried to convince him that it was an obligation, that he should vote even if it didn't decide who won, etc. etc. but I couldn't sway him.

Bands you saw early on who became big?Oil Can Boyd replied to remphish1's topic in Someone Else's Song My cousin told me to go see Arcade Fire at TTs and I ignored his advice. I saw them at the Royale on their second swing through for Funeral. I saw the Pixies open for Throwing Muses at the Rat (summer '87) and then at the Ritz in NYC (spring '88). I also saw Pixies headline at the Rat, TTs, and the Paradise in the '88-'90 timeframe.

Bands you saw early on who became big?Oil Can Boyd replied to remphish1's topic in Someone Else's Song I saw REM at BU in the summer of '85. I saw the Pixies opening for Throwing Muses twice, including once before Come On Pilgrim had been released. Arcade Fire and White Stripes (separately) in a big club.

I got a free print subscription to Rolling Stone. The review of Weir's solo album in the current issue begins "The Grateful Dead bassist's first solo album in a decade is a set of 'cowboy songs' ..."

Bruce Springsteen and The E Street BandOil Can Boyd replied to Sweet Papa Crimbo's topic in Someone Else's Song As well as can be expected. (Sorry - don't know how to post it here ...)

Bruce Springsteen and The E Street BandOil Can Boyd replied to Sweet Papa Crimbo's topic in Someone Else's Song I went to the signing in Cambridge yesterday and agree with earlier comments. It was very well run - like a combination of the TSA and the Soup Nazi episode of Seinfeld. Wait in line, step up, get your picture, move on. Bruce looked pretty exhausted by the time I got there and he had a ways to go. I thanked him for Nebraska and he thanked me for coming.

Bruce Springsteen and The E Street BandOil Can Boyd replied to Sweet Papa Crimbo's topic in Someone Else's Song Very nice. Do you get a chance to talk with him even briefly? Or is it step up, get your book, your picture, and move on?

Quite a finish in the Red Sox-Yankees game. It's easy to second guess but this one is on Girardi.

Bruce Springsteen and The E Street BandOil Can Boyd replied to Sweet Papa Crimbo's topic in Someone Else's Song Oh I agree - I was (mostly) joking. For an event like this they need to have it tightly controlled or it would be mayhem from the outset. I go to author readings/book signings fairly regularly and there is always someone who pulls out the author's entire works and wants each book signed and then wants to have a conversation with the author.

Bruce Springsteen and The E Street BandOil Can Boyd replied to Sweet Papa Crimbo's topic in Someone Else's Song Got a wristband! But the list of instructions is like going through the TSA. Ticket is non-transferable. No signatures allowed. You are required to buy a copy of the book at the event. No bags or memorabilia. Bookstore is closed three hours before the event. You will be handed a pre-signed copy of the book and will have one picture taken with Bruce. You cannot look him in the eye. (OK, I made that last one up ...)
