While the Jazzmaster is his go-to guitar, Nels has frequently played guitars other than his Jazzmasters/Jaguars with Wilco. He's played a Nash Tele, a Danelectro/Jerry Jones doubleneck with a baritone and a 12 string, a lap steel, a Gibson Les Paul Jr., a Hopf, even Duane Allman's Les Paul.

I have this piece of music I've been playing for a couple years on acoustic guitar. It's more like an exercise than a piece of music, but I thought I'd try to flesh it out into a rock or pop tune with drums, electric guitar, etc. I got the acoustic part down ok, and added a pretty good bass part. Then I realized I had no idea what type of drum track would work (I realize my process is a bit backwards), so as a place holder for the time being, I just played quarter notes through the whole track. The whole thing turned into a giant mess, and I was kind of depressed and discouraged for a few d

I just put my Jazzmaster away and pulled my Les Paul out from under the bed. I forgot how unreasonably heavy that damn thing is.

For the record, I have been a Nels fan since before WIlco existed. I like Nels and Wilco, but I think at this point they both would make a fairly large leap in creative growth (not that they necessarily need to) if they parted. I definitely don't see that happening if things stay the same.

Clearing out clutter from my office and I found this...

If this is the best photo from that shoot, I'd hate to see the rejects. -
I think Nels and Wilco should part ways. Aside from a couple solo spots here and there, I think Jeff has allowed Nels almost nothing in terms of having an impact on the band's sound. I'm glad Nels has a higher profile, more money, and dozens more guitars now than he ever likely would have without Wilco, but it's become a creative dead end.

I can't speak for the CD or digital versions, but the vinyl is not any quieter (I assume that's what you mean by "low mixing") than other records.

The worst way to get into this band is Infrared Roses.

I doubt Wilco would work with Albini. Or rather, I doubt Albini would work with Wilco. I think I read somewhere that he doesn't like their music.

^Yes, thanks for posting the link.

There's a really good interview with RT on Premier Guitar's FB page. He goes into some detail with regard to JT's production style. I'd link to it, but for some reason, this forum won't let me post links (or quote others.) Anyone know why that might be?

For some reason I can't quote on this forum anymore... I agree about the stage sets. That was a very clever idea, and it looked great in all the photos I've seen. My only complaint about the setlist is that Working Man has been played too many tours in a row, and it's really not good enough of a song to be such a workhorse. It's probably super easy to play compared to most of their material, and maybe they always play it at (or near) the end so they can coast through the last little bit of the show after punishing themselves for three hours.

That sounds like a killer show. The second set is nuts.

I understand Minneapolis has great bicycle infrastructure. Is this true in the general area where I'll be, and if so, are there bike rental places?
-
That all sounds good. I played at 7th Street Entry in the '90s, so I'm somewhat familiar with that area (or the '90s version of it, anyway.) Maybe they'll have a good show while I'm there.

Sorry to revive an ancient thread, but... My wife and I just decided to go to Minneapolis for the Who/Joan Jett concert in October. We'll be staying very close to the Target Arena, and we will most likely not have a vehicle. we'll probably only be in town for two days. Any recommendations of nearby things to do or places to eat would be much appreciated.

The impossible list! Top 30 bands/artist for you

My brain doesn't function in a way that makes lists like these possible. -
Oops, forgot to post this yesterday, but I saw Richard Thompson Trio last night. The other times I've seen him he had a larger band. This lineup left a lot of room open for guitar soloing, which was some of the best I've ever heard.

I'm not going to be there, but if I were I'd make a point to see the following: NRBQ (even though it's just Terry Adams plus a few new guys. It's worth it just to see Terry, and I'm sure the new guys are good.) Richard Thompson (seen him twice, but never as a trio) Anything Nels or Bill Frisell participate in. Speedy Ortiz Charles Lloyd King Sunny Ade I'd like to see full sets from all of those (plus Wilco, natch), and I'd try to supplement that by stage-hopping to see as many of the newer acts as possible.

Ornette left behind many gifts for all of us to enjoy. RIP.

^^ I need to pull the trigger on that one. It's been in my Amazon wish list since it came out.

I don't believe my interest in music has dipped as I've aged, but I have less time available to listen to music than I did when I was younger. I've been making a point over the last few years to keep up with new music and find out about new bands that appeal to me. I find that that's easier now than any other time in my life aside from when I was a young guy in the '80s who was 1. in the school band, and 2. growing up in a neighborhood full of older siblings. Those are two excellent ways to find out about a lot of music. Until I got out of college, word of mouth was one of the main ways

I guess it doesn't sound Jay Bennett-y enough for it to be an obvious Jeff Tweedy production.
