welch79
I don't own the album (yet) and have never really listened to The National. i must suggest, strongly, that you remedy this. high violet is nothing short of incredible. rockin performance of a song i wasn't expecting (i expected bloodbuzz). yes, it was sufjan, who also performed this song with them here in knoxville at the big ears festival this past march. btw...there is a concert being webcast via youtube this saturday night. link here:
jimmyjimmy
I don't own the album (yet) and have never really listened to The National. But I caught the Letterman performance last night, and daaaaamn, that was something. Why are they playing Milwaukee the same weeknight the New Pornographers are in Madison? I adore Neko and like the NPs on the whole but I'd skip their show in a heartbeat to catch the National right now FWIW...
solace
I adore Neko and like the NPs on the whole but I'd skip their show in a heartbeat to catch the National right now FWIW... ditto... no contest for me. although The Dodos are opening for New Pornos at that show... then again, The Antlers are opening for The National
Preferred B
But I live in Madison. If the concert locales were switched around it would be no contest. This requires a bit more thought.

Beltmann
NP are playing Milwaukee in June, if that helps. I plan to see both NP in June and The National later in the summer.
CortezTheKiller
National on Letterman In case anyone missed it. I didn't see Sean Lennon but I'm pretty sure Sufjan Stevens was doing some vocals. My favorite song on HV and they absolutely killed it. I always think the drummer looks like he could be a member of the Lennon family. I was thinking of John, but I'm sure Sean would be a good comparison as well.Yup. Uncanny resemblance to John Lennon. Rusty Shackleford
i got this w/the virginia ep, and i couldn't make it through to the end... I'm familiar with Mr. Moon's work with R.E.M. Suffice to say, I saw no need to purchase the Virginia EP/DVD.

A great band like the National and that's the best the director could come up with. What a waste, it could have been so much better. I remember buying that the day it came out, man was I sorry I did that after watching it .
cooperissup3r
i got this w/the virginia ep, and i couldn't make it through to the end... ya know, it's just very very very mediocre. but i think there's some interesting stuff in there...seeing the process they go through and stuff. i kinda feel like they're spewing a lot of bullshit at the beginning. those interviews are almost like what someone who makes indie music *would* say in an interview. "it's weird being in front of the camera, etc etc etc". That was one of the more disappointing and uninspired music docs of recent times. A great band like the National and that's the best the director could come up with. What a waste, it could have been so much better. it just has no zest. Moon has done some great work with Arcade Fire and the La Blogotheque site. A Skin.. has no story and nothing really happens.

A Skin.. has no story and nothing really happens.Yeah, the one he did with the Arcade Fire "Mirror Noir" was a lot better than the one with The National. The problem I had with The National one was there wasn't any full performances of any songs (that I can recall) and there wasn't much insight into the band at all. There were a few moments of interest, but oh so few. For a music doc to work for me it needs to capture some great musical moments, or have interesting interviews or behind the scenes moments, preferably all of these elements together. This one managed to fail on all those bases.
OOO
They're streaming a concert live on Youtube tonight.
radiatortunes
Thanks to you guys, I decided to give a listen and I LIKE what I'm hearing! I've gotten some pretty good music recomendations from this board. I'll second that. I haven't stopped listening to this record since Sunday night. And I can't believe my luck: they're playing Malkin Bowl here in Vancouver in Sept! Thanks, VC!
brianjeremy
Not being a big fan of this band, but in general liking Boxer fairly well, I am digging this new one a lot. I wish I had picked it up on purple vinyl now...but the CD was way cheaper. Plus the cd is hard as hell to get in and out of the slip case.

Beltmann
'High Violet' is the #2 album in the country this week behind Justin BieberWow. Good for the guys. After a week, I can say this: I've listened to nothing else for a week. Those poor New Pornographers, sitting on the shelf, not getting their fair due. And I haven't even cracked open the Dead Weather. Right now, I don't want to hear anything but High Violet. It's fast on its way to becoming an important fact in my life. cooperissup3r
His boys are going to have to drop first. he could sing it in his range. a little thing like pre-puberty isn't going to stop a musical force like the Bieb.

Wild Frank
I have had this record on non-stop for ten days now. I have a mantra floating around my head: "I was afraid that I'd eat your brains". Its like lyric-turetts. I hope I don't blurt it out in a meeting or whilst in bed with the wife!!.
