Analogman
Oasis: Supersonic (2016) is now on Amazon I just watched it. I think they have some great songs - but most of their stuff is really generic. I guess I would have a different view if I was a teenager in England in the mid 1990s. I always think Liam seems like someone you would probably want to punch in the face everyday.
jff
The OA. For me, this was the TV equivalent of something going in one ear and out the other. I didn't get it at all, or care about any of the characters.
NoJ
Freaks and Geeks. Really like how much they are developing the characters. I'm surprised that only a few people on the show had any sort of career after it got cancelled. They were all pretty good at their craft.
Winston Legthigh
I'm surprised that only a few people on the show had any sort of career after it got cancelled. They were all pretty good at their craft. Are you being facetious?
NoJ
Nope. I thought the brother and sister did a great job. Where are they now? Same with the other geeks.I'm aware of the 3 primary freaks and their careers later. I do wish Joe Flarehty slipped in a little Count Floyd ala SCTV during in the Halloween episode. That would've been righteous.
Winston Legthigh
Linda Cardellini has been in a ton of stuff since the show, most recently she had a pretty significant part in Mad Men. The dude who played her little brother was on Bones for 7 years, and apparently is a somewhat successful screenwriter (does writing Horrible Bosses count as success?) Martin Starr has been in a ton of stuff - he's in Silicon Valley now. The other geek - I don't know. But yes, a Count Floyd would have been righteous. Much agreed there. It was already sweet that they found a role for Joel Hodgson.
Albert Tatlock
David Bowie - The Last Five Years. Really great insights. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/tv/2017/01/07/david-bowie-last-five-years-treat-treatise-musics-departed-genius/ The last moments as described in the article above are priceless. NoJ
"The Hunt for Wilderpeople" was fun. The kids refused to watch it but my wife and I liked it.

brownie
Silence. Hard to describe. It shook me.Shook you in a good or bad way? I can't decide if I should see it or not. The trailer, and reviews I've read, make the movie seem terribly disturbing. I'm not sure I'd be able to endure it. Although I felt the same way about 12 Years a Slave, and when I finally saw that after years of avoiding it, I was able to make it through without much difficulty.
Beltmann
“Silence” never slips into sensationalism, which might be why its violence is fairly easy to stomach--it proves to be a searching, rewarding riposte to the kind of suffer-porn found in “Unbroken” or, um, any movie directed by Mel Gibson. I especially admired the way the film re-examines what it means to follow Jesus’ example. Rodrigues, like many modern evangelicals, believes his faith is defined by purism and pedantry, but I think Scorsese wants viewers to consider how that definition has limitations and, by reducing something complex to something like a checklist, perhaps damages real faith. What I found interesting is how Rodrigues’ confusion, rather than his success or failure, is the movie’s main subject. For me, that’s also what gives the movie contemporary relevance. To avoid spoilers, I’m going to tiptoe around that final shot, which I think argues that authentic faith has nothing to do with public displays (of declaration or renunciation). I think it might also serve as a personal note from Scorsese, suggesting something about his own sustained faith despite choosing a lifetime in Hollywood’s fast lane. I really wanted to talk to Scorsese after watching this.
NoJ
Watched Hell or High Water last night. Awesome dialog, hints of Coen to it. The guy who looked like a young George Clooney was pretty good too. Actually, all the actors did a fine job.
Winston Legthigh
Saw LALA Land over the weekend. Thought it was good not great. I thought it was not as good as the films that it's inspired by.
jff
Crashing (on Netflix). From the writer/creator of the excellent Fleabag. Easy binge watch at six 23 minute episodes. Slightly unsatisfying ending, but an enjoyable show all in all.
Winston Legthigh
Man, the Academy certainly didn't think much of Silence. But they sure loved the musical that was a love letter to Hollywood. Go figure.
nalafej
Binging on Fargo lately. Can't decide if season 1 is better than season 2 or not. Of course, I have 3 more episodes to go...
Boss_Tweedy
Been on an likely best picture kick lately, having seen "Fences," "La La Land," "Moonlight," and "Hidden Figures" (from which I just returned). All are good, certainly better than what usually fares best at the box office. Denzel Washington and Viola Davis are absolutely incredible in "Fences." I very much enjoyed "La La Land" and thought it to be a well-done homage to a bygone era of film. "Moonlight" is pretty heavy stuff but tells a pretty unique story and shows an individual in three distinct stages of his life as well as the experiences that mold him into who he becomes. "Hidden Figures" tells the story of three real-life heroes whose stories I wish I'd known sooner. Octavia Spencer is so great. I always love this time of year because I don't really get into most movies that come out of Hollywood nowadays. With the approaching of the Oscars it's nice to kind of binge my way through a lot of the nominated films.
brownie
I've seen six of the Best Picture nominees, which is a record for me. I like all the ones I've seen, except for Arrival, which I didn't like at all. My vote goes to Lion. (The ones I have not seen are Hacksaw Ridge, Manchester By the Sea, and Moonlight.) NoJ
Watched "Finding Vivian Maier" last night. Very well done. I love her style and am looking forward to the litigation surrounding the ownership of her work to get settled.
nalafej
Post what you think about the end of Season 2 - I have read there is going to be a Season 3. The second to last episode with the narration was odd but cool. The last episode seemed to go on forever with closing everything out and was a bit slow in pace compared to all the other episodes. So...not my favorite of the 10 episodes, but way better than your average tv show for sure. Hoping for a great season 3 soon.
Analogman
I thought the last episode was - I don't know - anticlimactic? Plus what's the deal with UFO stuff.
