TCP
I'm pretty relieved with last night's election results. Nice to see Canada full out reject white nationalism, though I guess the conservatives gained a slight increase in power and they're not much better. The NDP swapped my riding from red to orange, so it felt nice to actually help elect a socialist. I'm proud of my country for staying reasonable even if Justin Trudeau isn't the most compelling leader anymore.
Winston Legthigh
Holy shit - the White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham (who, by the way, has yet to hold a WH press briefing - since June) agrees with Trump that his opponents are "human scum." It's almost impossible to not invoke Godwin's Law here, but Jesus Fucking Christ.

jff
I think it's probably safe to say everyone is just utterly exhausted. If you want to keep up with political news, but don't want to deal with "the news," I suggest reading political historian Heather Cox Richardson's daily wrap-ups either on FB on on her blog. https://heathercoxrichardson.substack.com/

ih8music
Perhaps the silence of this thread is an indication of the weakness of the Democratic field? Speaking personally, I’m finding it hard to get passionately behind anyone in the race. They’re all ok with their own mix of strengths and weaknesses. All I care about is beating Trump — and unfortunately I’m seeing that as less and less likely as we see these candidates on the campaign trail. “At least I’m not that guy” is rarely a winning campaign strategy. Winston Legthigh
Impeachment and no discussion ♂What's there to discuss? The two sides sound as if they are talking about two separate things. The Senate will acquit. Our only hope is the election. This era has been soul crushing.
Chez
To paraphrase Waylon Jennings, "I'm sick and tired of feeling sick and tired." My Outrage Meter is nearly worn out.
KevinG
What's there to discuss? The two sides sound as if they are talking about two separate things. The Senate will acquit. Our only hope is the election. This era has been soul crushing. Has there ever been a moment in history that has felt so mundane. We all know how this will play out. My fear is that POTUS 45 will be emboldened to do more audacious things. Regardless of what you think about POTUS 45 the one thing he has done is eschewed the norms of politics. He has done and said things that have completely torpedoed other politicians. Is this just a blip on the radar or will this outlast him as a president? 10, 25, 50, 100 years historians will look back and see this very moment as a turning point in our country, and yet for a majority of Americans it is the battle of who care less. brownie
There’s nothing to discuss and I just don’t care any more. This should have happened a long time ago. I am sick and tired of Donald Trump and his exploits, and his constant presence on the news for something outrageous he did or said. I no longer care, and can’t listen to it any more. I will vote for someone else. I could even see myself voting for a moderate Republican instead of the selected Democrat, just to get rid of the guy. Tell me when it’s over. dagwave
Geez, it’s all so infuriating. Blatant lies and character suicides. Sometimes it’s all too much, but I believe this too shall pass, and am fervently optimistic that the kids (I.e. my 25 and 17 year old kids as an example) will initiate change for the better. Maybe naive, I’m betting on the future, because this shit has got to stop. F these walking diseased politicians.. oh and happy holidays.
Mr. Heartbreak
The Senate will acquit. Our only hope is the election. This era has been soul crushing. I agree with all of this. I hope we're wrong, but I fully expect the Senate to acquit the MF, and then the Repubs will flog this all the way until election day. Sadly, most of our fellow Americans are too disconnected (or too stupid) to even understand what he's done, or is doing.

Winston Legthigh
Putin says that Trump is being impeached for made-up reasons. Huh, would you look at that. Another talking point the GOP shares with Putin. Seriously, what in the ever loving fuck? And I've been yelled at - called a traitor and un-American for being "liberal." Which reminds me of an old joke. Two pakistani friends immigrate to America. After they process through the immigration line, they separate, but promise to meet up after a year, with a challenge to see who can be more assimilated into the US culture. A year passes, and they meet up as promised. First guy says "There's no way you won. Look at me! Here I am with a 12-pack of Budweiser, my son is playing Little League, I am grilling hotdogs, and my wife made this beautiful apple pie. I am Mr. USA!!" The other guy looks him up and down and replies "FUCK YOU TOWELHEAD!" *sad trombone*
remphish1
See now there is some discussion! Yes it’s tiring and I can’t wait til it’s over. Still it definitely a defining moment in US history
lost highway
Yeah, in a century the impeachment will be the main idea for Trump in a trivia question.... hopefully without a remarkable second term as part of that. It's funny how he had to shell out 2 million dollars for charity fraud a couple weeks ago on top of all of this. It was interesting when he screwed over the Kurds in Syria how the conservatives actually turned on him for a hot minute. Otherwise it seems they'll stick by him through anything. Meanwhile I keep hearing two reasonable, compelling and contradictory arguments: 1) you can't win a purple state with a radically progressive politician2) no centrist democrat has won a presidential election in the past couple decades (see Kerry, Gore etc)

mountain bed
Meanwhile I keep hearing two reasonable, compelling and contradictory arguments: 1) you can't win a purple state with a radically progressive politician2) no centrist democrat has won a presidential election in the past couple decades (see Kerry, Gore etc)Those are reasonable opinions. My take from that might be as you may stand a better chance with a centrist in battleground states you could lose a more hard left state to progressives that go third party, rather than the establishment candidate. But I don't know. I don't know what to think about polling anymore. Nate Silver was Nostradamus before Nov. '16. All bets are off the table. Also, (especially) viewed now - 10 years later - Obama would be considered centrist. Hell, he WAS centrist. How else would he have been elected a second time? Nothing he got accomplished would seem radical today for sure.
